I'm not saying she will be a terrible MJ, but doing a runway model show doesn't mean she's more qualified or suitable to play the role.

Doing runway shows doesn't exactly give you acting chops.

It's like those stupid videos showing those photoshopped images of her with red hair saying "hey she can pull of red hair too, check out these photoshopped images!"

yep.

and the other "qualification" she has according to many of those videos and articles is "She's Hot!! I mean look at her!! Peter is one lucky dude!"

there's no denying Zendaya is beautiful. but there should be more to being qualified for a role than just being "hot enough."

I remember lack of hotness is what caused some to completely crap on Shailene. :whatever:

actually, it's almost the same situation with Zendaya.

you take a beautiful actress and then for whatever reason dress them down, style them down, and otherwise downplay their beauty - to play a character who is supposed to be beautiful.

in Shailene's case, if I'm being blunt, she did have a bit of a "fat face" in the set pics. so, I can see where some people would complain. of course, that could have been easily fixed by getting her to slim down just a bit more before shooting.

but that's not the actress' fault. it's the fault of the trainer, stylist, or whoever was supposed to get her ready for the role.

but hey. at least Shailene's MJ was going to have red hair. :o

Honestly a lot of the discussion about Woodley as Mary Jane for the film really bothered me. But after all that, they ended up cutting her from the movie. I think it bothered me that they were cut because I feel like it validated a lot of the people who were decrying her casting in the role.

given how TASM 2 turned out, Shailene probably dodged a bullet by not being associated with the final outcome.......lol.

exactly, the same thing happen then too, everyone would post all these images of Shailene from photo shoots and magazines but, how she can look is irreverent... it all comes down to how she looks in the movie and more importantly her performance (in those same regards rather or not she can act is irreverent if they don't write the character right)

No it doesn't.

Yes it does. You have sight but no vision.

She's not just cat walking a runway stage. It's everything else she's doing AND not doing. What she's doing isn't standard nor textbook catwalkimg and yet she manages to inject personality into the inven. She manages to effortlessly convey sex appeal, supreme confidence, unapologetic fun, natural charisma and is clearly enjoying herself and all of this appears to be effortlessly instinctive to her. The qualities attributed to her disposition and personal character as evidenced by the video clearly makes her a worthy candidate; and what do you know; she allegedly has the role.

Doing runways doesn't really give insight into a person's character and personality other than walking emotionless. My post above explains why Zendaya fundamentally qualifies for the role and that's discounting the acting side, which to be fair doesn't require Meryl Streep levels of acting. Zendaya's filmography maybe limited but she's a very competent actress. There are people who have never acted in anything before, show up on a movie and pull off critically impressive performances. I'm not saying we're guaranteed to get that with Zendaya; need to see footage first at least but other than that; her beauty, her unapplogetic fun side, charisma and confidence most certainly qualifies her.

Welp, here's the options they have:

  1. Ignore the controversy and go with it anyway. Sony would care because they're in a desperate state, but Marvel clearly don't. :funny:
  2. Do re-shoots to change Zendaya back to being Michele as opposed to Mary Jane, while getting a new actress for Mary Jane.
  3. Cut any and all of Mary Jane being in the film, leaving only Michele.

1. is the only option. Changing would be cowardly, not believing in your material, and make them look weak and ineffectual as a studio, which Marvel is not going to do IMO.

all of this is assuming this report is even true, of course.

it's most likely true, but......you never know.........

didn't they kinda already show that they didn't believe in their own material with the whole misdirection of calling her Michelle

like they knew there would be controversy over it so they tried to cover it up

there was no real reason to not just announce it from the start

this whole idea of it being a plot twist or something is just silly

yep.

they tried to be "bold" with their casting choice but not bold enough to be upfront about it.

Movies use assumed titles, assumed character names etc. all the time to avoid early speculation and leaks. Especially as they seemingly wanted this to be a surprise.

Doesn't mean she was ever going to be called "Michelle" in the movie any more than The Dark Knight was ever going to actually be titled "Rory's First Kiss".

She may go by Michelle--that would suck IMO but we have nothing but baseless speculation to go off of for now.

^ that's why I'm eager to see ( or read reaction of ) footage where her character is actually called Michelle.

My version of the live action Marvel Spider-Man mythos would look more like this.

Latino - Liz Allan, Michelle Gonzales, Ava Ayala (white tiger)
Black - Gloria, Robertson family, Mary Jane/the Watson family, Debra Whitman
Asian - Kong, Cindy, Sha Shan, HS Principal, Ned
White - Peter/Parker family, Flash, Sally, Harry/the Osborn's, Gwen/the Stacy family, JJJ, Betty, Eddie Brock, Kingpin, Vulture, Tinker
HS/College Faculty: Diverse
Mixed race/other: Miles Morales, Carlie Cooper as mixed race, South Asian, or Middle Eastern
Villians: Diverse. Race change/keep other villains white as needed.

Have Peter, Gwen, and Harry best friends throughout high school. Introduce Mary Jane at the end of senior year, I.E, the third movie and last Spider-Man film in high school. Do the jackpot line for senior prom, instead of homecoming.

Tbh, though, the Spidey mythos is so large and has such amazing storylines that I don't think you can flesh out the story and characters in 3-6 films while keeping three in HS. You would have to do about eight IMO like the Harry Potter series. Or make a TV show instead.

you left out the Symboite family.

that's discrimination against aliens.

they deserve love and respect, too ( and compatible human hosts ).

:o

You're limiting it just to human hosts, and so you're discriminating against aliens as well, as some aliens would make perfectly good hosts. :o

There's nothing about symbiotes that says they have to have a human host and that the story couldn't work just as well with an alien host. As long as the characterisation is correct, that's all that matters.

Exactly. Doing a runway says nothing about acting ability however everything you described is why I posted that video. Zendaya seems to effortlessly capture the spirit of MJ.

which makes it doubly frustrating that creative seems to want to "hide" that spirit of MJ, just so they can have some kind of contrived, unneeded transformation/reveal.

Agreed. It's as if that moment has to be earned and that we need to go on a journey with Michelle before we can accept her as MJ, and then a further journey before we can accept her as Mary Jane.

It's like the Arrow TV series. Instead of being called Green Arrow from the start, he had to go through the Hood, then the Arrow, and finally add the "Green" bit in front of his name so that it would feel earned.

Well maybe in the sequel, MJ decides to add the "Mary" bit, and then in the next sequel we get the "Jane" bit. Just in case those names don't feel earned and she's arrived at them too soon. :o
