Ha nice to see my prediction was correct. Even how the reveal is done.

Zendaya adds really nothing to the movie. You could've cut her character and lost nothing as a result.

Nah, I'm thinking/hoping that her full name is "Michelle Mary Jane Watson."

Apparently we don't really get anything about her name in the film other than "Michelle" and her desired nickname, "MJ." She's a minor character in this film and is set up to become a larger role in future entries. It's clear that she's meant to be the MCU's MJ and apparently there's still enough wiggle room for them to present her in a more familiar light moving forward.

Wow.

I figured this would be the case. This making her a pseudo Mary Jane/Michelle classic charcter mixed with a brand new and giving her the MJ nickname is just so pointless. Should've just made her Mary Jane and ran with that instead of this.

Pretty much. Her character is so marginal, you could've just waited to set her up in the next movie. It wasn't deserving of all this hype and discussion.

yep.

pointless and COWARDLY, too.

It's like they wanted to be "bold" by casting a black/biracial actress and making such drastic changes ( both look wise and personality wise ) to such an iconic comic book character.

However, they weren't bold enough to be HONEST and UPFRONT about it.

They probably figured they would receive a ****load of backlash if they had officially announced Zendaya as the new Mary Jane Watson from the start.

So, they decided to be coy and secretive about it for over a year, constantly denying that Zendaya is MJ - no, she's just Michelle they kept saying.

And in the film itself, they wait literally until the final moments of the film before dropping the twist bomb on the audience.

So, it's a cowardly and sneaky approach on all fronts, and that actually ****** me off as much as the actual change itself. Most people, myself included, don't appreciate being lied to and deceived for over a year in trying to keep up the charade.

if you wanted to make such changes to the character, be BOLD and PROUD about it - especially casting a biracial actress for the part. If you felt you were bold enough to make that change, then you should be CELEBRATING that. not trying to hide it behind the veil of secrecy and coyness.

Yeah, on this particular note, I full-heartedly agree. The name change and trying to keep it a secret doesn't feel "clever" to me. It feels cowardly.

*cough* Cumberbatchisn'tKhanIswearyouguys - Jar Jar Abrams *cough* :o

yep.

it's not clever if it's so obvious and everyone can see it a mile away from the start.

which was the case here. as soon as Zendaya was cast in the unnamed mystery role, speculation here (and across the net) begin immediately that she's probably playing MJ.

then Mayimbe posted his scoop about it and that just fanned the flames further.

I know that some like myself were holding out hope until the end that it would not be true, but I accepted a long time ago that it was probably true.

I guess there's no reason to revel in its stupidity. I just hope it does not take me or anyone else out of the film.

They've already said that this was merely her introduction, and that her role would expand/get more important moving forward.

So no surprise there.

exactly this.

So where's Talion who was sure that Zendaya wasn't going to be MJ and that she'd be someone else in the Marvel universe?

Well.. in a way they were right she isn't playing Mary Jane she's playing Michelle/"MJ" so I don't think they have to answer for anything.:o

I think he meant that Zendaya wasn't playing any variation of MJ whatever her name might be, but said that we have to think further afield and that she's a different character, or something to that effect.

I admit, it seems dumb to not just call her Mary Jane if she is supposed to be this iteration of it. Either commit to the change or don't. It reminds me of the "Robin" reveal at the end of TDKR. I suppose it was a wink to the fans, but felt like a bad after thought.

Yeah, its clearly an introduction so the size of the role doesn't bother me.
