Well they've practically done that with everyone else in this movie. We get Ganke but have Ned Leeds's name slapped on him. I bet the Vulture isn't even called Vulture but Mysterio.
It's head-scratching. People always say Marvel takes liberty with the source material but I don't think they've ever taken this many liberties with an adaptation. Everybody in this movie besides May, Toomes (who may not even have Toomes' backstory or traits) & Stark bear nothing besides name to the source material.

Compare to Iron Man, Thor, Cap, Strange, even GOTG (which does take a lot of liberty but still remains true to characters) None of them have strayed from the source material as much as this movie.

How do you know it won't be Pig Man? After all, just because it looks like a bird doesn't mean it is one. :o

With this movie, if it looks like a duck, walks like a duck and quacks like a duck, it's probably a giraffe.

makes sense. :o

I think the issue is that those other characters have not been rebooted as much as Spider-Man, and they're trying to make the character feel fresh for the general audience.

Fresh/new doesn't always equal quality though.

I hope Feige is like us in the sense of wanting a long-lasting relationship between Peter and Mary Jane that blossoms into marriage and even a family.

I'm sure they won't go that route, though, but here's hoping.

She most likely won't be appearing at all in these movies. Pretty much everybody in every division at Marvel has their own reason for wanting to move away from that relationship. And at this point, it's just something we all need to start accepting.

Well, Amazing Spider-Man Renew Your Vows is a thing and while it's in its own Universe (created by Conway and Stegman), it outsold Slott-Man so I mean it's not entirely doom-and-gloom at Marvel with Mary Jane.

In addition, Kevin Feige is a big fan of the character and as some previously pointed out, Marvel Studios tends to operate differently from Marvel Comics. Sure, they may use stuff when necessary for their vision but they really operate differently. I'd say seeing Mary Jane on the big screen again is a possibility down the road.

Probably not in this film -- just a troll/Easter egg -- but down the road.

I seriously doubt we'll never see Mary Jane. She is THE love interest of the Marvel Universe. One way or another, she's showing up.

MJ is showing up in the form of Gwen Stacy, aka the Green Goblin. :o

There you go, it's in it's own universe. It has no impact on the regular continuity or the version of the character that Marvel prefers. It's just something being done to placate a group of people; a glorified what-if story if you will.

And remember, the first issue had a lot of variants and so forth. It's doubtful that it'll continue to do as well from here on out.

He is? Where did you hear this? I'll believe it when I see some proof. But all indications show that they're setting up this Michelle character to be the new main love interest for the character, which is probably a result of the fact that MJ has already been featured in the films before and they most likely don't want to retread old ground.

Very unlikely. I wouldn't be getting my hopes up if I were you.

Um, how does MJ being featured in the Raimi films be a reason to exclude her from every other future interpretation?

Plus, when Homecoming comes out, it'll be ten years after the last time we saw Kirsten Dunst's MJ, and given how the character was shamelessly thrown out of ASM2, another interpretation with better characterization and writing would very much be appreciated.

I don't get why you're being so adamant about this.

Exactly. Plus a more classic-esque would be very different from Dunst, to the point where she's almost a completely different character.

Again, because they don't want to repeat something that audiences have already seen before. Why else do you think they're making so many other changes to all the other characters?

Yes, I agree wholeheartedly. You're not wrong about that. I would love it to if we got that. But we most likely won't be getting that is what I've been trying to say.

I don't get why you're being so adamant about this.

I'm just trying to establish that all signs show that they want to move away from what's been done before and create an entirely new love interest for the story.

By your logic, this movie shouldn't have been made because Spider-Man movies have been done before. Do you know how backwards that logic is?

And what makes you think the MCU MJ (in case she shows up sooner or later, which unlike what you think, is likely) is gonna be exactly like the Kirsten Dunst interpretation? You're making baseless statements with no ground to stand on.

Also, just because you don't expect MJ to appear in the MCU doesn't mean that she won't. You're being a little biased here.

Well no, that's not what I'm trying to say. I think they're trying to do something new and different with a popular brand in ways that won't make the general movie-going public think to themselves "Wait, didn't we see this before?" Which is something that long-running movie properties do all the time.

When did I say that I think the MCU MJ would be just like the Dunst version? I don't think the MCU MJ will be like the Dunst version, because I strongly believe there won't be an MCU MJ, in case I haven't already made that pretty clear by now.

Also, just because you don't expect MJ to appear in the MCU doesn't mean that she won't. You're being a little biased here.

I don't think I'm being biased at all. I think I'm just being a realist.

Idk if that's completely true. There's been a lot of straying, mostly for the better IMO. The difference is minor details and tertiary characters from other source comics aren't as popular and well-known as those from Spidey's.

There you go, it's in it's own universe.

So are the films...

Very unlikely. I wouldn't be getting my hopes up if I were you.

I think I'm just being a realist.

The only problem is there's nothing actually real or concrete to support your "realism". :whatever:

Other than the fact that they appear to be setting up a completely different love interest for him? And somebody who they most probably feel is a much better match for Peter.

You keep using language like "most probably" and "highly unlikely" based on less than 5 minutes of footage from a 2+ hour film in a universe where we can feasibly expect 3+ solo films and appearances in other movies.

You. Are. Assuming. Everything.

I'm just assuming they're holding off on Harry, MJ, and maybe Gwen until college.
