You'd think movie studios would've learned after the whole Benedict Cumberbatch isn't Khan fiasco that it only hurts the reveal more when you have to lie/distort it to throw the fans offtrack.

Sure she's not "Mary Jane" but if they could've said Zendaya is a substitute, then you mitigate the collective eye rolls when the reveal happens.

I actually agree with this. The "leak" about her as Mary Jane could've just been them testing the water to see what kind of backlash they'd get. When they found out they stuck with the safe route keeping her as Michelle and leaving open either bringing her back or not based on public opinion.

Especially now that we know the lengths they went to ensuring all of Pete's other classmates were from the comics.

I agree.

The recent comments by Feige and Pascal feel like backtracking to me - like they left themselves enough wiggle room to change direction on the character based on feedback/response.

You don't give an OC the initials/nickname of Spidey's most iconic LI and then say it's "no big deal."

You don't play coy and secretive with the character's identity for over a year and then say it's "not a big twist."

And since they are now confirming Michelle is indeed NOT the MCU's Mary Jane Watson, then the next logical question to ask them would be "Does that mean Mary Jane Watson will show up in the sequel?"

I'm eager to hear their answer to that question.

If they are coy and vague on that answer, that suggests to me they had no real intention of ever using Mary Jane Watson. So while Michelle isn't the MCU's Mary Jane Watson, she's the MCU's "MJ" which means she is still functioning as Mary Jane's replacement.

That's one of the larger complaints at this point, and one of the best arguments people have that she was probably going to be MJ proper instead of MJINO, until the whole freakout on the net.

But that's why Michelle also having the initials/nickname MJ makes it less likely the other MJ, Mary Jane, will appear.

unless they turn the MJ thing into a running gag ( like all the LLs in Clark Kent's life ).

or, Michelle and Peter have a brief romance that ends, then Aunty May tries to set Peter up with her neighbor's niece who just moved to town, who's also called "MJ." And Peter's like "Please, not another MJ." So he avoids meeting her until she shows up at his door with the Face It Tiger line.

Unless you think Feige visits fan forums, it's pretty silly, imo, to think they backed out of making her Mary Jane because of negative reaction to a leak. It may sound nice to think fanboys/girls have that much influence but I'm pretty sure they knew any such backlash would have minimal effect on the film's success.

While I agree, it is still very possible Michelle can be created from a combination of characters as you suggest, but I would much prefer she wasn't. The reason is if she is part Mary Jane Watson or part Gwen Stacey as an example, then it most likely eliminates the possibilities of those characters showing up down the road as they have already been used essentially. I liked Michelle's character though and I am excited to see more of her in the Sequel.

She has the MJ initials so she's already part Mary Jane in a way and it's likely that she'll turn out to be the equivalent of Mary Jane in the MCU. The odds of "real Mary Jane" showing up are slim...very slim, imo.
