Things you noticed for the first time on DVD

I thought him falling looked really good...

To each his own, I guess.

I liked the CGI much more in Spider-Man 2.

Their Academy Award was well deserved.

Yeah, as great as some of the shots and moments in Spider-Man 3 are (Birth of Sandman, the symbiote in general, when Spidey is falling through the debris while trying to save Gwen, etc.), I have to say that overall, the effects in the movie are quite fake a lot of the time. There are some very unrealistic shots, like the aforementioned head replacements on Spidey (when falling and fighting Venom, but also when making the cage of poles around Venom at the end, very bad). One shot that always stuck out to me was the shot when Spidey jumps out of the window after "Go get 'em Tiger?" That shot is so...bleh...no good way to describe it. Just makes you sick when you watch it. And there's all the other moments, certain shots with Sandman, a lot of the Harry vs. Peter in the beginning, etc. Overall, the effects of Spider-Man 3 are good and cool, but a LOT of shots don't look too realistic. Compared to the effects in Spider-Man 2, one must consider the work and effects done. For Spider-Man 2, we needed tentacles, and the occasional CG double for Molina. For SM3, we needed the symbiote, Venom, Sandman (with full transformations), CG doubles for all villians, not to mention a lot more complex shots of Spidey without his mask. Just by simple workload and effects needed, one should expect SM3 to be too big to have the effects look too real, no matter if the budget is $250 million. Plus, SM2's budget was only about $50 million less.

In the end, the effects of SM2 were extremely realistic and well done, but overall more simplistic and less challenging than SM3, which still has great moments. But even SM2 had ugly shots (in the end, when he puts on his mask and jumps off the crane, a (very) few shots during the train chase, etc.). Anyway, yeah, the effects could have been better, I think, just not with the given circumstances.

I noticed when I got the dvd that this movie begins to suck right after the 1 hour mark on the dot.

I realized after I watched it during the weekend that this movie just plainly sucks. Sandman's story was boring; Venom's screentime was too short and even the Spidey/Venom battle was a yawn-fest; New Goblin should've gotten more time; Kirsten Dunst is a terrible actress; Sam Raimi made Peter Parker a mockery by having him dance and cry for the most of Spider-Man 3.

I disagree with every one of those but especially the bold part.

For the record, chaseter, it's these kinds of comments that cause me to roll my eyes like so: :whatever:

Then...I'll give you two? :whatever: :whatever:

You never saw Richard Donner make Superman strut.

Disagree if you want, but it could've been way better...the only fight involving Spidey that I most enjoyed was the final battle in Spider-Man, that fight was the only one that took Peter to the limits.

:woot: The dance scene was fine, it just went on too long. Coupled with three more dance scenes...it just seemed superfluous. I loved 'Rain drops' in SM2 and it was fine in SM3, there was just too much of it. A mockery, no:cwink:

I personally thought the CGI in this movie was good.

The only part I found kinda rough was when Peter was falling and trying to get the symbiote off him in the last battle.

"Things you noticed for the first time on DVD"

That now that everyone has the DVD they go at first "It's better than when I first saw it and was disappointed when it didn't live up to the hype in May!," followed a few weeks later by "Y'know, after rewatching it for the 3rd-20th time since it came on DVD in less than a month, I think it is kind of stale and boring, ad nauseum x infinity."

Oh wait that's this thread...

one thing I noticed was much i loved the amnesia bit with harry. although some might think it's a cheap plot device, i love it because it is a chance to see Harry and Peter as freinds which we almost nerver got to do in the previous films.
Another thing is how weird(to put it nicely) Eddie is. When he says to Gwen what about that amazing night we had, and she says that they just had coffee (and maybe a date of two), and he's already imagined them havig a relationship

You know peter is a nerd right? The whole point for peter struting and the jazz scene with MJ and Gwen was to show how far he'd gone from the scene in the web at the beginning with MJ, for instance. It was souposed to be out of character. Tobey even says it in the commentary.

When it comes to vfx shots that look a bit odd, I'd like to add in Spider-Man 2 when peter and mJ swing away from the imploding pier it really looks like a green screeen shot(although i didn't notice it when i saw it in the theaters), but watching it now you can certainly tell.

I now love the final battle, whereas before I hated it and thought it was shoddily done.

I still think the final battle feels ackward and disappointing, until Harry arrives and then it kicks ass. But now I realize it was because of the bad build up in act III of the movie (starting with Peter in the shower) to that point, where it just rushes the team-up, the hostage attack and Harry's motivation for sohwing instead of taking an extra 5-10 minutes to let it unfold naturally.

But the whole fight is spectacular as soon as Spidey reaches the web, it is just the first time I saw it, I was still reeling from the poor pace for the first half of the act. Soon as Harry shows up it finds even footing and is smooth sailing until the end of the movie. too bad you can't say the same for the 1 hour mark to whenever Harry shows up in the finale.

I sitll like the movie in spite of its faults, but it seems I'm in the minority. Oh well, I'll take a flawed melodramatic summer movie with a heart and soul over something as pre-manufactured but "audience appealiing" piece of shlock like the Pirates sequels, Transformers, X3 and FF movies.

I have to disagree that we needed to see his decision unfold. I think showing Harry say "Get out" and focusing on his face when Peter leaves (showing some conflict in it), then cutting straight to the battle, with Harry just showing up would have been the way to go. I don't think it was neccessary to see Harry change his mind about Peter. Him just showing up I think would have been a great way to go, and made the forgiveness message even stronger.

But that is just me.

Well said.

Nothing to do with the actual movie itself, more less a technical aspect. When it gets to the church bell tower scene, I notice a significant drop in the volume.

Meh.

i could have sworn the british reporter at the final battle was blonde

I thought the movie was going very well right up untill Harry gets his memory back. Then,it all seemed a mess. It's like Raimi said, "Um,wait. We only have 20-25 more minutes of film left to shoot? Damn. Well, let's hurry and wrap this thing up."
Venom and Sandman's team up,the ending battle,Raimi's kids, the news reporter, having MJ kidnapped...again,the very, very short Spidey vs. Venom battle and Peter's "I forgive you" moment while Sandman flies away. Just so many moments were obviously rushed.
The only moment of the second half that I absolutely LOVED was the moment in the church when Peter tries to rid himself of the symbiote and the creation of Venom. I consider that the second best moment of the franchise. Just...BADASS.:sym:

I don't know if it's been mentioned, but there's one of those hula girl bobble body things in the cab that MJ is suspended in. That's before Eddie smashes through it.

Dito. Iv been saying that to everyone who had a problem with it. I think people wanted more MJ hitting or something darke. I can understand that.

There are other ways of showing how far Peter had gone from the earlier scenes without being silly.
