Thor: Ragnarok The Official News and Speculation Thread - Part 1

I'd still prefer Thor to end up with Sif. Don't know if that's possible for now.

Anything's possible. An entire film is enough to establish a progression like that but only if it serves the character and the story and is written well - that's what I care about.

Both scores are fantastic but I have to give the nod to Tyler. His themes like Into Eternity were sublime and his anthem for Thor surged with so much power. I wish there was a way to marry the two scores somehow.
I REALLLLLLLY want Tyler to come back for Ragnarok. I LOVE his score for TDW, it's one of my favorite scores of all time (and that's saying something because soundtracks are like all I listen to lol). Doyle's score was superb as well, but I thought Tyler's was on another level.

Moving away from Jane as the romantic match and then getting Sif in that role should in fact be the result of a well written rationale. I'm not saying to pull a Superman III here and push Jane off somewhere but these two crazy kids have to come to the understanding that this isn't going to work long term for either of them. And THAT is a story.

Not to mention, frankly, they didn't move the relationship or Jane's character forward all that much in TDW. They could have... But gosh darn it, we needed to dedicate all that screen time that would have gone to such unimportant stuff like character building and relationships to physicists prancing about in the nude, TV sitcom stars returning to beloved characters from the first film and all that well thought out villainous back story for the antagonists. :o So, we can have as the main subplot, Jane and Thor's relationship as the backdrop to RAGNAROK's main plot if they decide to handle it well and flesh it out.

And... THAT'S what I mean by dropping Jane and moving forward with Sif. :cwink:

and I still disagree with you.
because you assume that your own feelings towards Selvig's and Darcy's role in TDW echoes those of the general audience, which simply is not true. TDW was more popular with the GA than most of the posters here believe, abd the humour, Darcy and Selvig were big (but not the only) parts of that. and it will be part of Ragnarök, maybe not to that extent, simply because the audience liked it. so, there will be screentime dedicated to them. and there will be screentime dedicated to the Hulk. and a little bit of screentime might even be dedicated to the plot of the movie. and I therefore simply see not the time to put in a subplot that handles a Thor/Jane breakup and Sif spontanously emerging as the Amazing Rebound-Woman. (which will not sit well with the audience who invested in the Thor/Jane romance for two movies already).

From a fanboy-point-of-view you might be right, but the movies simply attract different fanbases, those who like them because auf the fantasy-romance aspect for an example, which is huge at a certain demographic section.

True story... My 79 year old grandmother upon seeing the first THOR asked me, in these words, "Say, that warrior chick? Is she into Thor?" "Yes grandma. In the comics she's also a love interest". So... Out of nowhere rebound? The audience has been HIT OVER THE HEAD with Sif's true feelings. It wouldn't come out of nowhere except Thor coming to the realization of his own feelings,if they decided to go that route. Look, if they had done something interesting with Jane in TDW, I wouldn't be thinking it would be better to get Sif in there. For the record, AGAIN I love the first Thor film, not least of which is because of the old school romantic vibe. I don't have a problem with the idea of deep infatuation being the start of their relationship... But that's it, they didn't move the relationship forward in TDW or Jane as a character( she could be used to explore Asgard,it's culture, it's history and gain insight on Thor that way... Nah... Let's literally make her the macguffin of the plot and have nothing but the most boilerplate of romantic interaction with Thor) except for that ending where Loki/Odin sort of makes Thor choose between duty and love. The relationship was not well served by TDW, and if they think it's hunky dory to continue on that trajectory then I doubt it bodes well.

As for Selvig and Darcy and the rest of that... Maybe you know real people that enjoy what they did with them in TDW, but I don't, and there is a pretty nice chunk of opinion out there that points to what was done with those characters and the level of humor as being a problem with TDW (along with a lackluster villain, by the numbers action and not fullfilling the promise of the the first film in adapting this character and his world), and I don't think it comes out of nowhere or with malicious intent to slam the film JUST CUZ. I REALLY love that first film. I REALLY love Thor and his world. I want it to shine. I don't want by the numbers, or dull, or worse, tedious for this series. Sad to say... Jane, her character and the lack of doing anything interesting with her and it in TDW maybe a problem. So... Turn lemons into lemonade I say and do a story with that and show how a GOD cannot be with a human female for all sorts of logical reasons that do trump emotion. Have us feel it. Have it be bittersweet... But also have us see that he's got an equal and match in Sif too. There is stuff to be mined here for drama and story. I say do it.

We have seen time and again Jane willing to sacrifice her life to protect Thor, we have seen her stand with Thor at several low points in his life offering comfort and strength.
They are now living together as a couple ....
If you remember Rumors spread before AOU was released that Thor and Jane had broken up...
Marvel pretty much put that to bed with its quite humorous scene of Thor and Stark comparing girlfriends..(:jd:Jane is better)
I get that some people want Sif as his girlfriend, however in the TDW Thor politely let her know that no such romance was is in the cards...
Marvel has made its decision...

You mean the way Stan Lee did in the comics? I think it's presumptuous to say anyone knows that they have made some absolute decision when in the first and second film, and in her appearances on AoS they continue to tease Sif'a feelings for the Odinson.

Things can change, and I ask this question... Why have it so obvious that Sif has feelings for Thor if NOT to bring that into play? Alexander is no less a fan favorite than Portman, possibly more so, and her star is on the rise. There has been groundwork laid to go into the direction of Sif/Thor if they so wish to.

In any case, if they actually build the Thor and Jane relationship up by stuff they SHOW us and don't just tell us about, if in TR they move the relationship forward and have it grow and become enriched, then I will be over the moon. I would love to see that over her becoming simply the macguffin again or being some weakness an enemy can exploit against Thor or even giving her some sort of by the numbers "science exposition" role. But if they do something along those lines I would much rather they move Thor on to Sif. Again, there is still a lot of deep character and dramatic material to explore even if they break them up and do it well and not in a shoddy manner.

I don't think so. Jaimie Alexander is still quite an obscure name among a lot of people. And I don't see how she's more popular than Portman. Her body of work is miniscule compared with the latter's. Not to mention the fact that Portman has an Oscar under her belt.

Jaimie Alexander may be "on the rise" but she's got a long way to go before she'll carry the same kind of box-office weight as someone like Portman.

I agree, Portman is a International star as well, Alexander not so much..
Marvel knows how to put butts in seats and Portman has a proven track record so Its only smart that they keep her around..
Sif will get a great show this go round and we may even see some tense interaction between the two ladies, however In the end Jane will still remain Thor's true Love...

Glad I'm not the only one who feels this way. I also love Tyler's soundtrack to TDW and have listened to it more times than I probably want to admit. I think it's criminally underrated.

Yeah when Thor was going after those falling cars, he reference his TDW theme.

I enjoy it a lot as well. It's actually the only superhero movie soundtrack that I go back to and listen to now and then, just as music.

I took me a while, but I came to really like the score in TDW as well. I was (and still am) GUTTED that they completely abandoned the wonderful main theme(and it's variations) from the first Thor that Doyle did though. Horrible waste.

This is why I thought it would be wonderful if they could figure out a way to marry the two scores. They are both really excellent scores. Along with Silvestri's Cap and Avengers scores they are my favorite soundtracks of all the MCU films.

I think, narratively, it'll be a pretty big 180 to switch to Lady Sif. That being said, people don't go to Thor movies to see Natalie Portman anymore. They may have for the first movie, but now people know what's interesting in Thor movies and Jane has been fairly poorly written throughout and, at a minimum, isn't overly exciting. I don't she makes or breaks the movie.

She hasn't been poorly written throughout. She was really important in the first film and well presented. You guys are so reactionary sometimes. If they could recapture the chemistry from the first film this whole thing can come full circle and hopefully all this negativity can cease. It's become so tiresome to me as a fan of the franchise.

I don't think she's poorly written. Her character is consistent and has some good moments throughout the series (her slapping Loki in TDW comes to mind). The problem is that she (and her posse even mores) feel largely arbitrary, especially in more Asgard-centric stories like TDW where she's relegated to serving as a mason jar for the film's macguffin. Sif, I think, has more agency in the story just by being an Asgardian, which would probably help her avoid feeling like the obligatory love interest.

Who said anything about general star power? I said "fan favorite". They aren't the same thing.

Let's be very blunt... No one has ever gone to a THOR film thinking, "Man... I can't wait to see Natalie Portman." That's obtuse and silly.

And I'm telling you that Portman is infinitely more popular and more well-known than Alexander among the wider audience. The fact that Alexander is supposedly more of a "fan-favourite" is irrelevant. Portman is an Academy Award winner with a massive repertoire of impressive works under her belt. Alexander ain't got s*** on that.

And you think there are people saying this about Jaimie Alexander?
