Thor: Ragnarok The Official News and Speculation Thread - - - - Part 13

That was really interesting. In the end of the day things did change in a big way for the Thor franchise and Kevin Smith was totally on board with the new direction and vibe. His reactions to the Teaser Trailer and then his review to the movie speak volumes of how he really felt watching the movie. He loved it. And in a way he contributed for Thor Ragnarok ending up the way it did. Chris Hemsworth took notes and it made him take that step forward and explain how he really felt to Marvel.

Oh, I'm not against the changes. I loved the movie.

I'm just saying as a longtime listener of Fatman on Batman (before the YouTube channel), Smith often goes back to the same old stories that involve him and he tends to like the ''smell of his own farts'' a little too much. :yay:

The Martian Manhunter better be in Justie League 2 dammit. :argh:

Along with Green Lantern and maybe even Hawkgirl.

Yes and if they don't do it by then Thor can adopt him.

I saw this last Saturday, and the first act was watchable, the second act and almost all the humor felt like an SNL skit, and the end was more or less how I'd have done it. So its about what I expect from Marvel anymore. Was it worth what was spent to see the movie? Maybe? I just hope BP is better.

They let Waititi direct the film he wanted to make and they took Thor in a radical new direction. It's obviously paying off big time. Everyone seems to love this new movie. And Thor's always been a pretty wacky concept honestly.

I'm still undecided on how I feel about the film pending another viewing. There is so much to love about it and all that Kirby goodness made me very happy but I'm still adjusting to this new Thor characterization. At the moment I find myself wishing the change felt a little more organic in the context of the established universe. I know Waititi wouldn't care about that but Marvel absolutely should. Waititi is a filmmaker. Marvel are the architects of this universe. I've only seen the film once and am anxious to see it again with fresh eyes to reassess but you know ... life and all that.

I personally love the humor in Marvel films. At the same time, I think they can overdo it. They're skating the edge for me. I think you should be able to have a totally bonkers film like Ragnarok and have it fit in the same universe but I don't want them all like this. GOTG and now Thor are the really "out there" films right now. And they are fun. But this doesn't need to be some kind of a template. Not all Marvel films should skew comedic.

Thank goodness for the Russos. My faith is that they're going to bring much needed gravitas for the Avengers finale. It's funny that you have two films: Winter Soldier and Ragnarok, both awesome but at totally opposite ends of the spectrum.

At the time the Russos took over from Joss, I was worried the MCU might lose some of it's flair and become too self serious - but Waititi's apparently totally got that covered. Not to mention Gunn. I think we're good.

Also I get a totally different vibe from Coogler's Black Panther than we got from the trailers for Ragnarok. Again totally different type of filmmaker. And I think that film looks sick. Can't wait.

All that said, I think Avengers: Infinity War will essentially be where most joke "end". Thanos doesn't strike me as the humorous type.

Though, Ultron didn't either in his trailer.

Agree. But Whedon and the Russos are totally different filmmakers.

Compare Ultron to the first Avengers and the film we got does not really surprise. That's Whedon.

But look at Winter Soldier and Civil War - cream of the crop MCU right there with perfect amounts of compelling serious drama. I just don't see them delivering a joke fest out of complete left field.

I don't mind a little humor in AI but maybe not as much as in Thor. You have a serious situation with a bit of nervous wisecracking thrown in.

Very cool!
Not sure why but I like Loki's the best.

Hulk's CGI looks amazing. Hats off to them for always improving the way he looks.

So, I saw Thor Ragnarok yesterday, and it was awesome. I don't know why some people were making a fuss about it being too comical, because it really did not feel to me like I was laughing all that much. I suppose some of it might be because I saw a lot of the comical parts in the trailers, but still. I would say I laughed about 10 times during the movie. Other times I just found myself smiling because of enjoying the moment. This is not to suggest it did not have funny parts, but just to suggest to me it was well balanced all the way around and for me it did not rely as heavily on comedy as some others have suggested. Definitely one of my favorite MCU movies so far for sure. I will have to wait for repeat viewings though before I can really solidify a placement with some of the other great MCU titles.

Great that you had a good time! I enjoyed it even more on a second viewing.

I couldn't agree more. Ragnarok was thoroughly enjoyable from start to finish but it definitely was not the joke fest some people claimed it was. It's clear that the mere thought of humor in a comic book movie positively deranges a certain segment of fandom. The film was a fun, epic adventure with some genuinely hilarious moments along the way. There was a good balance between the comedic scenes and wonderful character moments. And above all else, there were massive stakes and universe-changing consequences. Most of the reviewers either downplayed or ignored those facts in their desire to emphasize the humor.

Thor's growth as a person really impressed me. For the first time, a Thor movie focused on Thor himself, instead of giving the character arc to Loki. It's a welcome change, one that Chris Hemsworth himself demanded and inspired. Bravo to him for going to Kevin Feige with his concerns, and to Feige and Taika Waititi for listening to their star and creating this amazing film with him. This was Thor at his finest and we as fans owe it all to them.

My thoughts exactly

Anyone who says Ragnarok was too jokey or had no bigger theme or message to it are simply people who are not intelligent to get "it". :p It's amazing how a movie can be a fun ride and yet explore difficult and dark themes at the same time.

watched it for the 3rd time yesterday...
yes, It is a movie that can be enjoyed more on repeat viewing. But that is enough for me for now that I wait for the Blu-ray now.

I want to ready to move on from Ragnarok to Black Panther next, but the theme song at the end credit which also used in Grandmaster pub is so unique that it spins my head, haha
