Thor: Ragnarok The Official News and Speculation Thread - Part 5

Also Curious why Thor cuts his hair. I mean if he doesn't meet Hela until the later part of the film, why do we see the Hela looking thing on his back when he has LONG hair? I would assume that takes place early on after he leaves Cap and Tony in AoU
I think it's a "rite of passage" kind of thing. And is also practical in a barbarical gladiatorial arena to have the hair short. As he said, Thor is easily matched with the others gladiator, so he gotta take all precautions necessary... No mjolnir so he's packed with all kind of weapons and even a shield wich is not common at all for him. Long hair and a massive cape doesn't help much in a fight to the death kind of thing, you can easily get screwed by both...

You can also see that his hair looks very roughly cut. With deep cuts on the sides. It was either him that did it himself or even Valkyrie that gave him a hand.

The thing is, from what we know, Thor does meet Hela before he's sent to Skaar... It's his meeting with her the precipitates the hole Skaar thing. Like you said and i think it's right to assume that he has long hair because that's early on the movie after he arrives from Earth. Even though is armour is quite different on those shots. It's a bit blurry the timeline for now.

Yeah I was wondering when we'd see Executioner myself.
Just wondering WHERE we see him. Do we see him on Asgard or is he another Asgardian on Sakaar like Val?
By the way, HD posted an interview with Tessa in the Valkyrie thread, she says Thor cuts his hair on Sakaar.

Anyone else notice we've heard virtually nothing about Executioner in all this news?
Yeah, I don't expect him to do much. With all these villains, he seems like someone Thor can do a way with quickly. Maybe they set up something with Enchantress.

The lack of inclusion of Amora is one of the biggest blind spot of the franchise.

Yeah, he's the only new character that we haven't seen here which is odd. All we know so far is what Karl Urban has said about the character, a.k.a. he has an interesting character arc and most of his scenes are with Cate Blanchett. He is definitely in the scene where Hela appears to be taking control of Asgard because a crew member was spotted holding his axe in the on set pics. From that most have guessed that he will be Hela's henchman and will probably have a relationship with her that is similar to Skurge's relationship with Amora in the comics. I think it's likely that he'll follow her loyally until she either rejects him or he has a crisis of conscience and he then helps Thor and co in some way, perhaps sacrificing his life in the process as a tribute to the comic character's epic 'He stood alone at Gjallerbru' storyline.

I kind of hope he gets to tussle with Hulk as much as he does with Thor. A great way to show his bona files as a threat and bad ass would be to show him hanging with Hulk in a fight the way Thor has.

Yeah, the Enchantress, Balder the Brave and Beta Rey Bill to me feel like the big three that will still be missing from the Thor movies after this one is complete.

Surfer

Pretty sure it was Thor too. Incredible similarities in Christian, Norse, Greek, and all mythology throughout the world. When Christians came to the Nordic lands to force them to convert or be killed, they kind of compromised a bit and retconned the Norse myths canon, if you will, by having Ragnarok be end right before Genesis, which in itself is rumored to have been derived from Norse legends.

Or the similarities could be chalked up to the Ancient Astronaut theory which is cool because that was one of the big inspirations for Kirby, who developed it through his lengthy run on Thor years before Erich Von Daniken's Chariots of the Gods. One of the many angles the first Thor movie absolutely nailed.

Either way, go Thor!

No source I've ever read on Thor in Norse mythology refers to his power being linked to his hair at all. That is a biblical Samson thing.

Things concerning his power in the actual myths are that he needed to wear gauntlets/gloves to even hold Mjolnir, and he could use a belt to double his strength (both have been used in the comics on occasion)

The only story covering hair in the myths is Loki having cut off all of Sif's hair (who was Thor's wife) which infuriated Thor.

It is thought the Romans identified Thor with Hercules, but that's about it afaik.

It seems they are sort of combining Hela and Enchantress? Or is that way off?

Can't be certain until we see the film. I guess that could be the case if they give her Executioner as a main henchman. But what of the other aspects of Amora? The literal power of seduction? The fiery temper? The true desire for Thor that manifests as unhealthy obsession? Amora is interesting in that she does actually have genuine feelings for Thor. But she's a ball of rage due to Thor not reciprocating.

Why do the hot ones always gotta be crazy? Am I right fellas? :o

Well they could give Hela the Amora power set.

Thor was never stoic. For a 2000 year old warrior he is hotheaded and stubborn as a mule. And he is a buffoon. So Taika has this spot on. He is a great warrior and a noble prince but he was never really bright. He was smashing his problems most times than solving them.

There is a reason Loki calls him "oaf" so many times. buffoon sounds about right.

Eh... Mythological Thor and Marvel Comics Thor (which these films are based off of) are two different beasts. You can't go too far with the comedy in my eyes before you start to undermine a lot the character and tone of these films. That's certainly my own and others' issue with TDW.

Wish they could've had the Silver Savage show up, damn you Fox :(

I almost find it kinda hilarious how Taika Waititi, Hiddleston etc are all backpedaling on the "It's the funniest Marvel movie ever' now that their comments are receiving such a negative reaction from the fans. Makes me wonder what the final tone will ultimately be.

Also, shout out to Brooklyn, Krypton!

A buffoon? Please. That's 100% nonsense.

Show me somewhere in the comics where he is the equivalent of Jack Burton "accidentally" winning fights and completely out of his league. Burton was just a downright ignorant character. Taika's comments are drawing on the comedic timing and lovable nature of Hemsworth as it was with Russell.

Nobody said it was "the funniest Marvel movie ever".
Backpedalling? Based on what? The EW interviews and behind the scenes stuff where done months ago when they had their set visit. So all this stuff that is surfacing now is from 5/6/7 months ago...

The fans we're the ones that started making the fuss about the comedy. Because of the mess that was TDW in that department and Marvel bringing in a director which is known for his comedy. Also some comments triggered those negative reactions which we're exaggerated as usual.

The script was said to be very dark. And that was one of the reasons they brought in Taika to lighten things up and inject some freshness to the Thor franchise, so i think the final tone will be of a adventure, action packed movie with many moments of levity and comedy sprinkled with some emotional depth and high stakes on the line.

No one is b ackpedaling Harry. You should know what backpedalling looks like, you do it all the time in the spider-man forums...

The movie will be great. This isn't some controversial director and some unreliable studio doing the movie. It's Taika and Marvel. The lowest level of quality will be at least "good".

Oh, I stand corrected then. Just found it odd that the Waititi interview came out after the Hiddleston one. I have no doubt the movie will be great with the people involved. It being a bad film is out of the question. (I didn't even hate TDW)

Then the definition of the word is lost on you, then....

Any chance of Hela actually killing Odin and thereby making the enchantment null and void?

I doubt it. Not when a big part of the plot is pretty much guaranteed to be "finding Odin on Earth". If Odin dies, its as part of the big finale, while a "catch Mjolnir in your hand" scene makes a lot more sense as an introduction.

I definitely don't think that Odin is going to survive this movie. I can't imagine that Hopkins will come back for another MCU entry (it sounds like he may have had to be persuaded to do this one) so it would the perfect point to off him. Heimdall too.

Why, exactly, would you kill off the perfect person to replace Odin as King of Asgard? I mean, Thor certainly isn't going to be doing it, not after his big realization that he can't be king. Plus, the stories this is drawing inspiration from similarly had Thor *not* taking up the throne. Sure, Baldur became king in the original version, but Baldur isn't around in the movie, while someone else fills the roll of "major non-Thor deity with strong sense of duty".

I mean it's not like he actually can't. It's more he figured he didn't want to do it, cos he saw what he had to do, and he didn't think he had it in him to be a great King. Which is why forcing him to be King by having Odin killed would be something very interesting.

That would be similar to T'Challa's story.

You have a point, but just because Thor didn't take up the throne in the source material, it doesn't mean that he won't decide to do it in the MCU. After the events of Ragnarok and IW he may decide that his loyalty is truly with Asgard and trying to rebuild what's left of it after Hela, Surtur, Fenris and Thanos have all wreaked their havoc. A lot of people are speculating that the newer Avengers will take up the mantle after IW and the original six will retire themselves (at least for a while anyway). Thor ultimately deciding to go home, take up the throne and try to rebuild and restore peace in the Nine Realms would be a good explanation for his absence.
