Torchwood - Part 1

Episode 3 of "Torchwood: Miracle Day," airs on Starz this Friday, July 22, and part of it is apparently for American eyes only.

The Sun reports a scene, in which Captain Jack Harness (John Barrowman) sleeps with a male bartender, won't make it to air -- on account of its generally graphic sexual nature and not the orientation being depicted.

"The UK and US versions of 'Torchwood' are slightly different," a BBC spokesperson says in response. "However, these differences do not change the story in any way and the strong storylines are first and foremost to the series."

When Zap2it it spoke with Barrowman on the "Torchwood" set, he did brag about scenes of "full-on man sex" but admitted that it's all in service of the story.

"It's not gratuitous sex," he says. "It facilitates the story, so it's nothing they grab just to put on the camera and sensationalize it."

And while the encounter in question doesn't look to have much long term relationship potential for Captain Jack, Barrowman does say that there will be some love scenes of a more complex nature as the season moves on.

"You go back into history with Jack," Barroman tells Zap2it, "and you discover an integral relationship that is part and parcel to what is happening. It's a massive story about his past and probably, if I can say this, one of his true loves. So there are relationships, but there are also some one-night stands ... some dirty."

Fans of the show probably won't take issue with watching either.

Weird that it wasn't banned from American TV. Americans seem to be much more squeamish about both gay sexuality and sexuality in general than Brits.

It probably gets a pass because it's on STARZ

I wonder which one we'll get in Canada. I hope it's the U.S. version, but if we get the UK version it might not be in our broadcaster's control.

So in the middle of this big investigation into why he's dieing Jack thinks, lets shagg some bartender?

Jack goes to a bar and has no money so he pays in flesh :)

The article says it is within the story context, don't panic.

I'm just finding it hard to think of a good context that it could fit in.

Jack not shagging someone would be completely out of character. ;)

I have a salacious joke and some may says of bad taste so
but we know in which context It will fit ! har har har

Isn't it supposed to be in a flashback? Maybe Jack once boned someone who turns out to be behind Miracle Day or something...

This episode was alot of fun. I like the black fellow but the Welsh lady still remains annoying. Hopefully she dies horribly.

The bit with that lady from Six Feet Under having a comedy moment with the murdering peedo Bill Pullman about pretending to be sorry about his crime kinda just felt in bad taste. Whatever tone they were going for, it just felt awkward.

hmm seeing as how she is the main bloody character in the entire series, i don't see this happening

i'm still amazed a lot of people don't know this is actually the fourth torchwood series

I swear if anything happens to Gwen, Rhys or her family, I will punch RTD in the balls.

Mulder was the main character of the Xfiles, they had no problem getting rid of him for the last couple of seasons and he was likable. Same with Lost and Battlestar Galatica, more than happy to kill off great characters. This character (along with the Welsh accents) are really annoying. It's not that shes difficult to understand, it's that everyone tends to feel Hollywoody and tangible somewhat, except her. I don't think of Welsh accented woman as action hero's and she's not really doing anything to change that. It's too bad that American Asain lady had a snap, she was much more likable, even when she was being a baddie, thats how much Gwen sucks.

I think you're the first person I've ever seen think that Eve Myles' accent and voice isn't attractive.
She's in Dragon Age II, and my friends always say how sexy the welsh elfs voice is.
Have you even SEEN the first three seasons?! the fans don't WANT hollywood feeling actors in this show. Aside from Jack, she is the main character of the show, and even if Jack didn't return in season 4, she would have come back. It would be like Alias when Jennifer Garner didn't come back, it just won't work.

I think Eve Myles looks and sounds great. And I like Gwen. Not sure where all the hate is coming from. At least not for these last two seasons.

But that's what this new show fells like, with her being the odd one out.
Hell man, it's pretty clear they are aiming for action sequences and effects you would see in a Hollywood movie or something like 24. That's something I always liked about the Xfiles over these shows, alot of the stuff with just indicated or brushed over lightly than in your face.

She IS the odd man out. She's in a new land, with new teammates, without her husband, and she's been out of the game for almost two years.
It's probably because she doesn't sound like all the other actors. But the show is supposed to go other places than the US too, so we'll probably hear more accents.

And that's why I hate her. She's like a Welsh mum doing Kung Fu moves.
Jack always seems to me (much like his real life actor) to be a flamboyant character. I think having a kind of supremely straight faced right wing character set in old ways (maybe even homophobic) would have had a really interesting dichotomy.

Thats because its on Prime Time BBC 1. Previous seasons of Torchwood were on BBC2 and BBC3.

If Torchwood:MD was on any other network in the UK we would be see more graphic stuff.

I find Gwen annoying as well. Even though Torchwood is Jacks spin off she is the main character in the show I would say.

That was either the tamest "graphic" sex scene I've ever seen or I watched the UK version...

Was it the gay sex scene that was too graphic for Britian or the stright sex scene that actually showed boobs (I don't think I've ever seen boobs on BBC1)?

I've been to America a dozen times, and I've watched American TV for 25 year of my life and I never knew that lemonade in the states was different to lemonade in the UK. I thought lemonade was fizzy because it's lemonade not lemon juice.

EDIT: I'm not even sure how the gay sex worked... I've never had to research gay sex before but can they have sex face to face like that? Isn't the aim of gay sex for one of them to get the others ass? My ass isn't on my front and there is no way that I know of to get to my ass with another guy on top of me face to face.

I think the idea they are going with is that for the 1st time in centuries (well over 2000 years if you count his time he was buried) Jack is mortal. His next death will be his last, and as far as he knows, it's nothing but oblivion after that.
His running off to the bar, shagging some random bartender, then relishing the Hangover the next morning, shows he wanted to enjoy something in the time he has left: The next time he gets killed (and he got killed a lot in his past Torchwood adventures so he'd be mindful this one could easily result in the same) he won't be coming back (as far he knows at any rate).

Yeah, the BBC has had plenty of raunchy stuff on before, but they generally keep it away from the main channel's primetime slots.
