TPBs Bought/Thought Thread

I picked up the Boys vol 1 and 2 recently. I really enjoyed vol 1, but by the second volume it seemed to not quite have the impact. It seemed to be to be just more of the same thing, but I'm hoping the ending suggests a more over-arcing storyline to continue in the next issues. That would help me really get into this book, which I do enjoy.

I also picked up Tom Strong vol. 2. Amazing, and completely unique. Tom Strong seems to be to pretty much be Alan Moore writing all the stories he wants to with this one character as the basis. Ghost stories, old pulp SF, even a story like one from Mad Magazine.
It reminded me a lot of Supreme, especially this volume. So if you have read and enjoyed Mr. Moore's Supreme run, then I would definitely suggest Tom Strong as well.

Just picked up the first three volumes of Criminal by Ed Brubaker.

Great books.

Spider-Man/Doctor Octopus: Negative Exposure
Written by Brian K. Vaughan
Art by Staz Johnson

I picked this up in the $5 box at the comic store because Vaughan wrote it. It's about a staff photographer at the Daily Bugle who suspects Peter is Spider-Man and makes a deal with Dr. Octopus to find out. Vaughan shows he has a good handle on how to write Spider-Man; I'd like to see him do any other Spidey work. Johnson's art is fine except for the occasional weird face. Negative Exposure isn't an essential Spider-Man mini-series, but it's worth a look.

Punisher MAX Volume 2 (Hardcover)
Written by Garth Ennis
Art by Dougie Braithwaite and Leandro Fernandez

The second Punisher MAX hardcover collects the third and fourth story arcs, Mother Russia and Up is Down, Black is White. Both are better than the first two arcs, and have some great characterization, especially of the Punisher himself. In Up is Down, Black is White, Nicky Cavella gets a surprising amount of backstory for a Punisher villain, which is a nice change, although I think the arc could stand to feature the Punisher a little more. Of the two stories, I prefer Mother Russia because of its story and action (and Nick Fury), but both arcs make it clear that Ennis really knows the character. The artists aren't mind-blowing, but they're good throughout.

I was thinking of picking up Criminal based purely on my love of Brubaker. What's it about?

Each vol. basically tells a story about a person who is a criminal and messed up their lives go from there. I highly recommend it.

Punisher: From First to Last

Amazing book. If you are a Punisher fan you NEED to pick this up.

With the exception of me having to take a wicked s**t at a most inopportune time....I believe that is a yes.

So people, in case you didn't notice, this threads just been moved to the Marvel boards so we can get some more traffic in here. So if you're a regular and go looking for this thread, it's in the Marvel forums now. Got it?

I left a redirect in the Misc. Comics forum, so they should be able to figure it out.

Scalped Vol 3: Dead Mothers just came out.

Buy it. NOW. EVERYONE.

I'm astonished I missed out on this book for so long. Fabulous.

Also, I'm considering dropping 30 bucks on the new Hardcover of the Nocturnals. Anyone read it yet?

Planet Hulk
Written by Greg Pak
Art by Carlo Pagulayan, Aaron Lopestri, Juan Santacruz, Gary Frank, and Takeshi Miyazawa

I've not read that much Hulk stuff, but I liked this book a lot. Pak does a great job making the Hulk deeper than he is often written, and gives ample attention to the supporting characters. The story is built up well so the ending really feels important. And, just for good measure, the book has a lot of the Hulk kicking ass.

World War Hulk
Written by Greg Pak
Art By John Romita Jr.

WWH is full of great action, but it lacks the depth of Planet Hulk. and i don't know if I like its ending. But it's still a lot of fun and JRJR's art looks amazing.

I just picked up three volumes of Heros for Hire at Half Price Books today. I was actually suprrised it is pretty good. I just go them cause I've just gotten into Civil War and WWH so I figured what the heck. Does anyone know if there are more then just the three volumes?

finally got around to reading Vol.12 of Powers

i liked it

Wow. Back from the dead. I guess that move to the Marvel forums was ill-advised. :(
