why the hell does jude law look more like holmes than rdj?

Every time I see a spot for this on TV...I think..."I have to wait till Christmas?"

Bah.

Love the new trailer, especially the scene where we hear how he breaks that thug down.

Tony Stark wasn't an alcoholic at all in Iron Man.

Just FYI guys, drinking alcohol doesn't make you an alcoholic. Tony Stark wasn't hitting the sauce while wearing the armor in the movie.

Tony Stark didn't become an alcoholic until the accident where his armor went off and killed a guy in the comics. He wouldn't stop drinking and started drinking while wearing the armor.

In the movie he just enjoys fine liquor and having a drink. Tons of people do that. Tons of people also get drunk and aren't really alcoholics. Tony's really just a social and casual drinker, not an alcoholic. I doubt they will go too far with it in the new movie though.

I love any trailer with E. S. Posthumus cranking in the background. Remember sPider-Man's?

The movie sure looks fun, but for some reason my brain keeps rebelling against the idea of a cool and charming Holmes. I always felt Holmes was characterized by his coldness and disconnect from normal people just as much as his brilliant intellect. In these trailers, RDJ reminds me more of Tom Baker than Sherlock Holmes. Still, there is a lot to like here.

Loved the new trailer. Showed a bit too many money shots but I enjoyed it. I'm looking forward to this.

First my enthusiasm for this flick disappeared completely, since I'm kinda ''done'' with huge-budget-stupid-action-flicks, but I'd love to catch this one anyway. I mean, it is obvious that they raped the characters completely, but probably in a very cool way. :p Plus, it's a Guy Ritchie flick. You can say what you want, but that man made some goddamn entertaining flicks.

Actually they're going back to the books, in which RBJ in the film is portraying that.

And reading the first script, it's not unintelligent at all. I can tell they've made some changes to it. Holmes thinking of what move to do when in slo mo is brilliant. BUt the first draft is intelligent and is very Holmes. It's fun but has alot of brains to it.

Seeing your avatar in this thread suddenly makes me desperately wish for a Herzog Sherlock Holmes movie.

RDJ

Sorry, that was bugging me. :o :p

Moving on, having read the script, it is faithful to Holmes lore, to an extent. But since they cast Downey, they seem to have written the character to have more of Downey's trademark snark. That, in addition to the mutual attraction to Adler ([blackout]including their sex[/blackout]) makes me think they're looking to appeal to the masses as well as to other Holmes literature fans.

Not really. Holmes in the books was described as knowing martial arts, being a very good boxer, and master fencer. The action really isn't that out of place for Holmes at all. In fact, in the book that was supposed to be the "death" of Holmes, in which Moriarty is first introduced, Holmes describes to Watson how he had to physically fight off the men Moriarty had sent to tail Holmes.

The things that strike me as being most out of character is Watson actually striking Holmes. You could also say the more emphasized sexual tension with Adler as well, but it's been a common theory among Holmes' enthusiasts that Adler was the only woman Holmes "loved." Having read that book, I do think it's a bit exaggerated, but I'm not really too bothered at the added romance.

Looks good. But this movie, per the script, is much more intelligent and character driven than the trailer lets on.

Rachel McAdams looks like the weak point.

Surprise, surprise.

It looks nice, but it doesn't strike me as Sherlock Holmes.

That's been my complaint for a long time, but I'm over it now. I'm just going to try and enjoy the movie.

I don't remember him really having a thing for her in the story, but hey, it's Hollywood, so there's going to be a romance.

I hear ya, but for me it's a bit weird because I've been reading through my Holmes collection of late.

You should never be "done" with any genre Carmine, a true film fan has an open mind to appreciating all cinema has to offer, not just the high brow subtitled stuff that works as a woman repellent at parties and 70's sepia toned cop flicks. :cwink:

I take it you mean the character of Irene Adler is poorly written? b/c McAdam's is a fine actress.

There really isn't anything too implicit in the story. Only the fact that Watson says Holmes only refers to her as "the woman." And that he acknowledges her as one of the few people to beat him (besides Moriarty).

Really, it was more of a theory that sprung up from fans of the book, and it gained more popularity there than from any actual events in the story itself. However, it certainly could be viewed in that context.

Basically, it was a fan theory that gained popularity, and has, because of the popularity of the idea, been embellished upon much more in movies and tv series.

He doesn't. Holmes underestimates her, she sees through his deception, and gets away before she's caught(but she never intended to do anything bad anyway), so she gains Sherlock's respect and his sexist view on women becomes more favorable.

The funny thing is that, for me, the hardest thing to believe about the new movie won't be Holmes high flying action sequences, but the idea that Holmes would have any interest or sway with a woman. As an avid reader of Sherlock Holmes, I've never seen such an asexual character in my life. Arthur Conan Doyle himself said in a letter to Joseph Bell(Doyle's basis for Holmes) that
"Holmes is as inhuman as a Babbage's calculating machine and just about as likely to fall in love". (Reference)

Holmes also said in the Adventure of the Second Stain,
"And yet the motives of women are so inscrutable. You remember the woman at Margate whom I suspected for the same reason. No powder on her nose -- that proved to be the correct solution. How can you build on such a quicksand? Their most trivial action may mean volumes, or their most extraordinary conduct may depend upon a hairpin or a curling tongs."

So ****ing what? This is a new movie. There have been a ton of Sherlock Holmes movie and TV shows. Many of which present different takes on the character.

Remember Young Sherlock Holmes? He had a school sweetheart in that one that was a girl.

This Sherlock Holmes is reimagined as like a steampunk popcorn movie. So its different.
