Why can't too guys be best friends anymore without it being gay subtext? Just enjoy each other's company and feel safe cuddled in each other's big strong arms. Just a guy's guy!

I saw Holmes & Watson's relationship more like Brothers than just best friends in this film . They've solved so many case together over the years that they developed a special bond .

That I believe Homes didn't want to see come to an end .

Enjoyed the film quite a bit. Slight;y different than the script but a bit more coherent. Solid 8/10. Yeah and I loved the score. The credits were marvelous too.

I just don't buy the gay subtext. I wrote in my review, it's more of a brotherly bond. And Holmes is faced with what could be beginning of the empty nest syndrome. It doesn't make him comfortable, and when he's faced with it, it's awkward. The scene where I think people could be getting this is when after Watson returns form the hospital and him and Holmes are sitting on the bed on different ends and their is this awkward conversation. It's awkward because Watson, no matter how he wants to go on with his life, Holmes is hinting him to join back in, while Holmes is faced with Watson's decision of still leaving or joining him.

I remember when Jeremy Brett was talking about what would have happened to Holmes without Watson, and he said Sherlock probably would have died, early and alone, of a drug overdose. I think that's the thing Downey's Holmes is very aware of. Watson is Holmes anchor to humanity. Without his friend, he knows his demons will overtake him, and he'll become cold, bitter, alone, and probably die of a morphine overdose.

Exactly. Holmes can't live without Watson. Like brothers, they're bound. They're the closest thing to brothers. Blood is the only thing stopping them from it. They're more than friends. Companions, (no not the gay type) and accociates.

He's not jealous of Mary because he'll take him away (not in the gay sense) but because if he goes, what else is left for him? He is already kind of eccentric and a recluse, think if Watson was gone.

One of my favorite Sherlock/Watson moments was in the Dancing Men episode of the Jeremy Brett series.

Holmes is interrogating the servants on the death of the lady of the house. The top maid is very upset by the death, and Holmes keeps asking question after question. Then Watson leans over and whispers something into Holmes ear. Holmes then asks the top maid if she would like to sit down.

I always felt that small scene perfectly encapsulated why Sherlock needs Watson.

The gay thing is always going to be there. I'm not saying because they are gay.

But remember Hot Fuzz? Remember how they kind of hint at that? Why? Because all these sort of buddy movies, buddy action movies, buddy action comedies have this sort of almost homoerotic element to it. Sometime its unintentional and just by interpretation. But it's there. Sometimes it's like whoa, what the hell, like the volleyball scene in Top Gun. You just can't get around it.

I think a line was cut from the movie from Irene joking about Holmes and Watson being "all over each other." Because the truth is THEY ARE CLOSE. They aren't gay close, but I mean they have a total bromance you know? A bromance doesn't have to be gay. They are as close as two men can be without being gay basically.

Anyone remember Zero Effect? It's basically the same plot and same Holmes/Watson dynamic/relationship between Bill Pullman and Ben Stiller's character. Darryl Zero is NOT gay and he fell in love with the criminal he was investigating, but he still needed his friend and confidante in Ben Stiller's character.

Because whatever Holmes is, be it a savant, genius, or a guy with Aspberger's before such a term existed, Watson accepts Holmes and is still his friend.

With Irene Adler in the movie, Irene Adler is an equal to Holmes, but a woman so there's clearly an attraction there. But because of that, they can't be together.

Next thing you know it we'll be calling Riggs and Murtagh gay.

The thing is, like best friends or brothers, they've known eachother for so long, they know their buttons and know how to push them. I've known my best friend for 10 years now and we know eachother perfectly. And we know what we're thinking or how we'll react.

Sadly in today's society Bromance and gay are almost the same thing in some peoples minds.

My girlfriend and I had an hour-long discussion about that after the film. I mentioned the Brad Pitt rumor to her and her reaction was "HELL NO!" While I don't share those exact sentiments, I do have to admit that I'm not sure Pitt is right for the role. I do like him and I wouldn't be opposed to seeing him as another character in the series, but I don't think he's right for the Professor.

A few actors we considered...

Liam Neeson
Jason Isaacs
Stellan Skarsgaard
Ian McShane
DANIEL DAY LEWIS (this probably would never happen, but just imagine it)
James Frain
Rufus Sewell

I dont know about Brad Pitt , thats kind of a tough call.

I don't get it. As much talent and the amount of times Pitt suprises us, people still doubt him. He's a versatile actor.

I would've freaked out and shouted if it was Pitt. I was just pissed we got no reveal at all.

I was like, "Holy ****, Moriarty is in there! We are going to get some badass awesome cameo reveal at the very end."

Then we didn't get it pre-credits. Then I waited all the way after the credits.

Nothing.

GRRRRRRRRRRRR!

When I heard the voice, I thought it MIGHT be Russell Crowe since he was originally rumored as Watson.

Instead Moriarty was played by some uncredited actor. LAME COPOUT!

I know people that still think DiCaprio sucks because they haven't seen him in anything other then Titanic. :cmad:

And he's worked, quite well, with Guy Ritchie before. That's a reasonable consideration for casting.

i dont hate Leo and i dont think he is a bad actor.

but to me it would help if he wouldnt always look angry in movies. its like this is serious acting for him.

He usually plays angry characters though.

His character in the Departed smashed a guy over the head with glass and started beating on him because the guy made a remark about him being on his period.

I also really liked the score. It sounded unique and interesting with those kind of piano beats. Was that the main instrument, a piano? And the violin music as well as the Irish drinking songs. Those were fun.

Something interesting, and someone correct me if I'm wrong. Almost every time we see Holmes playing his violin in the movie, he's playing the strings with his hands or fingers. He carries the bow for it around but almost NEVER uses it for playing the violin. I think in one establishing shot he's taking the bow away from the strings.

Did anyone else notice this, or was there a point where Holmes used a bow? I would inquire about the significance, like perhaps Downey was uncomfortable using the bow or something like that. Or am I reading too much into it?

what's the folk song that was being played during Holmes barista ring fight scene against that bigger guy where he first sees Rachel McAdams wink at him?

I've been trying to find it on youtube

can someone who has actually read the novels answer this question: did they totally butcher the original SH character as the trailers and clips suggest?
