What's the one Holmes story about a murder mystery involving a snake being put through a vent shaft?

God, I loved that part too.

And I can't get that scene where
Holmes follows Adler, and ended up being the old man at the carriage out of my head. It was done so damn well. And it was clever.

I really enjoyed Holmes disguises. I didn't even expect them to be there. Did he do it in the books?

I was absolutely loving the movie from that point on

Hey, for someone quite interested in holmes lore after seeing the moive can any of you recomend a good Sherlock Holmes book for a beginner to get into?

I just picked up the Complete Sherlock Holmes from Barnes and Noble for $20. It has the four main novels, as well as all 56 short stories, all collected in a very appealing leather binding.

I just downloaded The Rocky Road to Dublin on itunes. What a fantastic song and great addition to this movie.

I'd recommend A Study in Scarlet myself. I mean, maybe it's not the best of the stories, and it is written in an odd sort of format, but it is the introduction to the characters, the very first Holmes story, and personally I say start from the beginning.

That song is awesome. I can't stop listening to it.

I love that whole sequence it was done brilliantly . As was the sequence which showed Holmes strategic mind at work in calculating the right areas to attack the body of his opponent .

The first third of that book is a very good exposition to the Holmes and Watson characters. It's in this book Watson learns of Holmes fighting abilities. It's once they get into the case that the book becomes less interesting. Holmes finds out a few facts, confronts the murderer, and then the entire second half of the book is about the murderer and what lead him to commit those murders.

You know...I always kinda wanted Batman to do that in a movie.

I think it's a difference in whats planned and whats just conditioning. Holmes methodically thinks about how to disable his opponent. With Batman, he's so conditioned to it, his actions become instinct, and he doesn't need to think about them.

just came back from watching this flick, and i thought it was fantastic

great job by the whole cast, especially Robert Downey Jr

his explanations and problem solving skills were done very well

i hope the rumors about Brad Pitt playing Moriarty in the sequel are true. he would do fantastic opposite RDJ. plus, he's worked with Guy Ritchie before (Snatch)

Pretty sure it was his voice, was hoping for a reveal at the end.

Loved the movie, had seen Avatar an hour earlier and was disappointed with that so this was a nice way to end the evening.

I dont want them to use Moriarty straight away in the sequel, i want them to leave him for the 3rd movie but with the ending of this movie it looks like he will be the main villain if theres a 2nd one. Is there any other good villains from the novels that they could use instead of Moriarty??

Gosh I really want to see this. I'll have to wait to when I fly back East.:csad:

After reading some of the remarks about it I think it will be entertaining. And I'm sure Downey will be quite entertaining as a eccentric Holmes.

From what I've seen so far. I'm guessing he has some manic depressive qualities about him. Is that kinda similar to the books interpretation?

Saw it..

Very entertaining. The chemistry was outstanding between Downey and Law, and the movie itself was A LOT better than it should be. The movie was intelligent enough that it gave itself enough integrity to call itself "Sherlock Holmes", and the visuals were stunning thanks to Guy Ritchie's direction.

The plot device of 'Scooby Doobying' clues did get a little old after a while but that's a minor flaw. There's nothing wrong with the plot per say, but there was a lack of tension between Mark Strong's Ra's Al Ghul type charcter and Holmes. Nevertheless, the movie still worked.

I liked the foreshadowing to a potential sequel; aka the movie's Joker card from Batman Begins.

I give it an 8.5 out of 10. I thought it was a bit more creative and fun than Avatar, thoguh I enjoyed both movies.

All good recommendations. As a beginner, I'd start with The Adventures of Sherlock Holmes. Even though Study in Scarlett is the first where Watson meet Holmes and they solve their first case, it's not the best story and half of the book doesn't even involve Sherlock. "Adventures" is a really good starting place, with many of the best stories.

And if you don't feel like reading any of them, the Granada TV series is almost word for word faithful to the stories, featuring excellent performances by Jeremy Brett and David Burke. You can probably see a few of the clips on YouTube.

I haven't seen that series. One question though, do they play Watson as the bumbling comic relief? That was one problem I always had with the old series and the movies, as a fan of the books.

In that series Watson is a very capable man. If you want a "definitive" series to go with as far as acting and story, that one is it.

Lord Blackwood was created in the comic book so they don't even have to use a Holmes character, though Blackwood was based on a few real life people.
They really set it up for Moriarty, it would be like The Joker not being the villain for The Dark Knight. Which they could've done, he could've just been referenced in the background and not seen until the third but story wise it seemed to help.

In the books Moriarty and Holmes fall down a waterfall and are presumed dead perhaps its just Moriarty and he returns in the 4th film. ?

I loved the Moriarty bits. Not sure if it was Brad Pitt or not. I don't think I have ever heard him do an English accent. The gun and everything, just badass.
