Watched this last night, thought it was quite good, though was slow in parts and some of the effects were poor, but RDJ was awesome in it.

8/10

Probably because it had a budget of only $90 million, according to BOM. I think that's pretty low for a blockbuster.

In comparison though, Hellboy II had a budget of $85 million 2 years ago and the effects were much better in that than here.

$80 million budget actually. I didn't see anything wrong with the effects.

Watched it last week for the first time and thought it was amazing. I am a big fan of Ritchie and he didn't disappoint. I came into the film not expecting anything but I loved the action, plot, fight scenes, again pure Guy Ritchie. RDJ and Jude Law were really good and can tell they had fun together. And the ending and appearance of a certain villian has me excited for the sequel. It was like seeing the Joker card at the end of Batman Begins. I can't wait to see Holmes sqaure off against his equal.

9.5/10

Is the DVD just going to be a bare single disc?

Hellboy II Or Sherlock Holmes? Hellboy is listed as $85 mill on a number of sites DJ and SH is $90 on BOmojo.

Anyway, the only time I noticed the effects were in the boat yard sequence and london bridge sequence at the end, they were quite poor by todays standards.

What do you guys think of Colin Firth as Moriarty?

He's a great actor but i don't think he would be menacing enough. Even in a more subtle, formal way.

Colin Firth? The Pride and Prejudice actor? I wouldn't have a problem with that. Whats the skinny on that Brad Pitt rumor as Moriarty? I didn't think there was any truth to it.

He could surprise us. I remember him being pretty cold as Mr. Darcy in Pride and Prejudice.

Firth was recently nominated for an Oscar for A Single Man, which is why I thought of him.

I hope the Pitt rumor has no truth to it. I don't know why, but I just don't want to see him as Moriarty. I guess I'm tired of him. Depp too.

Pitt would make a great Moriarty and a great match to RDJ's Holmes.

The thing about Pitt is I don't think he's EVER played a villian, let alone super villian. Troy was the closest he got to a villian I guess, doesn't really count. Although, isn't Pitt voicing the villian in that new CGI movie comming out?lol
But I'd love to see Pitt take on Moriarty and agree Pitt would be a perfect counter to the RDJ casting.

The 2nd time I watched Sherlock Holmes I couldn't understand one thing.

*SPOILER*
It was mentioned Blackwood killed 5 women prior to the opening scene when he was caught. Wasn't it all a hoax? Was that girl in the beginning faking like the guard did in the jail? I don't remember if they ever explained that.

I wouldn't mind seeing Pitt as Moriarty but although I've never read any of the novels, from what i've heard of Moriarty over the years to me he always seemed to be quite a bit older than Holmes. Around 10-20 years older, that's just the vibe and thing that for some strange reason is in my head.

He could always use makeup of course IF he got the role.

Can any fans of the book reply about Moriarty's age?

Pitt played borderline villainous characters in Fight Club and Twelve Monkeys.

Not to mention in the movie Kalifornia with him, Juliette Lewis and David Duchovny, he plays a redneck homicidial scumbag. I think that might be the only role he went that evil.

I don't think it was a hoax. I think Blackwood really had her under a trance. But [BLACKOUT]Holmes prevented her from dying, right? so Blackwood didn't kill five women.[/BLACKOUT] I might be wrong about this because I saw the movie months ago and can't remember everything about the plot.

I'm not sure Moriarty's age was ever given but I've always had th same impression you did.

I hope they make him older in the sequel. That way he'll have those extra years of experience to be even more devious and always a step or two ahead of Holmes.

If they were to make them around the same age and just have them be each others equals I wouldn't like that as much. With Moriarty possibly being older with more experience, he can always be ahead of Holmes until the end where Holmes really has to push his wits and intelligence to the max to beat him. A real big challenge for him to spice the film up.

After watching it for the 3rd time I think I got it.

Blackwood mentioned in his cell to Holmes that the 5 girls he killed were sacrificed for a higher cause and he meant to be caught the 6th time in the crypt. The girl in the beginning was a daughter of a high class family who hired Holmes to find her so I think it was a real trance.

As far as Moriarty's age I alway pictured Holmes as an older person also from the old shows and few books I remember. So I don't see a problem of having Moriarty be around Holme's age. That would make it easy to pit them both against each other physically as well as mentally.

Just saw this recently and have to day it was probably one of the best updates to a series I've seen. I was skeptical about Downy and Law but they where fantastic.

Moriarty is older, says so in the stories. In fact he's grayed and balding by the time Holmes meets him.

Thank you. That makes sense.
