What are your Gripes/Concerns with the project?

My painting teacher had to paint him for the Greatest Game Ever Played poster and said he was a complete *****e. Said he was completely full of himself.

Not surprising

not really. Trasformers had the benefit of 2 insanely successful directors, 1 as producer, the top special effects house (ILM) and 2 self-proclaimed fans as writers, as well as a solid lead actor. DB, on the other hand, has a very mediocre (arguably crumby) director doubling as the writer, a great producer who doesn't seem to really care, a pretty good SFX team, and a lead actor who constantly gets negative comments from non-regulars and people on other forums. the only similarities between the way these movies are being handled is that both aren't as faithful as they could be. TF had the makings of a hit...DB is a half-assed attempt at duplicating that hit.

I was comparing them in terms of taking a young, relatively untested actor (Shia has a good resume but he was still untested in terms of carrying a huge summer blockbuster), throw a decent supporting cast behind him, and fx the hell out of it (which we don't know will happen yet with DB, I'm just assuming). Your right about the quality of the behind the camera work (which seems the be DB's biggest achilles heal) but it appears to me that Fox is going for something similar in front of the camera.

Nope, what probably happened is that FOX noticed they had been sitting on a gold mine for 5 or so years, and that because of the possibility of a strike, they should make it as soon as possible. I'm sure the person who brought up the idea of making Dragonball into a movie showed them the revenue Transformers made, but I highly doubt they are copying it. If so, they should aim higher than that POS.
i couldn't agree with the parts i bolded more. they, all of the sudden in 2007, realized they were sitting on a gold mine for 5 plus years (after seeing how TF turned over a huge profit) and because of the writer's strike, instead of waiting for it to be over and do it properly, they should make it as soon as possible. it SCREAMS "rushed". in fact, there were no talks of the DB flick until fall 2007...AFTER they saw how big of a profit TF made.

i also agree that Dragon Ball should be aiming higher than TF, but unfortunately that's very much not the case. they're aiming much lower.

[QUOTEI also find it incredibly insulting that you mentioned Spielberg and LaBouf in the same sentence like their equals. These guys are not comparable in terms of talent. LaBouf runs around acting like a *****e, while Spielberg is a legend. His latest movies maybe not, but still he has my respect.[/QUOTE]
i don't know why you find it insulting...you realize LaBeouf is working with Spielberg on the new Indiana Jones movie right? their names have been and will be mentioned in the same sentence a whole bunch. personally, i find it funny that Spielberg picked such a talentless "actor" like Chatwin in one of his films. then again, Chatwin perfectly fits the role of an annoying brat kid from the suburbs. anyway, if you really think it's incredibly insulting that LaBeouf and Spielberg mentioned in the same sentence, especially since they're working closely on the same movie, then you're being ridiculous.

at any rate, it's clear you're going to continue to defend this movie regardless of how it turns out. it could turn out like Elektra or DOA and you'd probably still defend it....so i'm done arguing with you. i don't hold any grudge with you, but don't expect me to take your arguments seriously anymore.

I like Shia...

And I thik DB will turn out similar to Fantastic Four, entertaining, but with unmet potential.

I'm not defending it, I'm bashing Transformers while saying this movie has the potential to be good. I never said it would be as good as Spiderman or other comic book movies, and it could turn out like Fantastic Four for all I know.

All I'm saying is that it has potential to be better than those, especially Transformers. We don't know for sure until AT THE VERY LEAST a trailer.

This film will most definetly be a Fantastic Four level film. And just as bad, too.

I'm not defending it

uh....yes you are. whenever anyone makes a negative comment you're one of the first to counter it. that's called being defensive. s'all good...like i said. i just won't take your arguments seriously anymore.

that's exactly how i see it. entertaining, but not nearly as great as it could have been. i don't need a trailer to see that about this movie.

Right back at you.

i'm all for faithfulness but if piccolo doesn't have pink biceps it won't bother me one bit, hehe

Another fear of mine is the lack of Toriyama's humor which pretty much is a third of what defines Dragonball.

They realize it needs humor, we already have info on 2 or 3 scenes that involve humor.

I was speaking of Toriyama's humor which is--safe to say--quirky in its own way.

One thing's for sure, though. No talking poop.

Ah okay. Well they kept Goku's hunger, which is Toriyama-esque.

i dont like shia but i dont hate him....

he's like john cusack(sp?) to me

We have a good mix in this forum of people who are positive and negative towards the film. So what are your gripes or concerns if any? This is the place to post them

People please stay civil. If you disagree with someone just agree to disagree. We all want a GREAT Dargon Ball film :dbz:

Gripe: My ONLY problem so far is that form the casting sheets we are likely going to get an unpopular Highschool student Goku which I feel is a COMPLETELY unnecessary change to the character. I hope thats been changed or isnt in the movie for more than 15 minutes

Concern:Chatwin, I've only seen him in two movies War of the Worlds which put me to sleep and The Invisible where I thought he was decent, So I'm hoping he can truly bring Goku to life and that james Wong saw something special in him when casting (I'd very much like to know who else auditioned for the part)

I seriously don't like the cast. I don't see any of the actors living up to their characters.

Chatwin was good in The Invisible, but....he's playing Goku. Goku! They could have done better. And they got the vampire from Buffy to play Piccolo? BIG mistake!

Hopefully they make this movie their own thing. Hopefully it's good. I mean, I'll see it, I'll support DBZ, but sadly, I can see this movie falling flat on its face.

I don't know why everyone is saying that chatwin is annoying in war of the worlds. In what ways was he annoying? I'll stand by the fact that dakota fanning was, but Chatwin didn't really do anything annoying.

Really, I'm okay with the cast. I'm not sure about chatwin, only because I've only seen him in two flicks, but Marsters seems to know his stuff, and he's a solid actor(and if you've seen him in his spike makeup, just paint him green, give him a bald cap and antennae and he's got the look). Chow yun fat works as master roshi, but I've never seen him lose the accent. I've seen emmy rossum act before, and she's got the look, so I'm not worried there.

I really just hope they get a solid script. Given the time constraints, I wouldn't expect anything amazing, but something that works enough to entertain.

i dont think the small frame of time will changeanything... prob not as rushed as people anticipate...i mean what the hell else does chatwin and marsters have to do :)

Well.. they need to fight and talk... lol

This movie looks like its gonna be Real World Mexico or Dawson Creek with Martial Arts :csad:

lol. chatwin looks like such a normal guy. i think just seeing him in orange gi in itself will be pretty funny.

i'm still upset with chatwin's hair. it's not nearly as crazy as it should be. i hope they at least spike it up korean style. if not goku, then yamcha. or teto. haha.
