It would have to be done well. There has been no definitive Joker origin (excluding the forthcoming Confidential storyline) so far in the comics, and I do like the idea of no backstory. While not suggesting I want the Joker to be like either of the, Hannibal Lecter (Silence of the Lambs era) and John Doe are two of the best screen villains of recent times, and neither had an extensive backstory, indeed Doe had none at all, while giving Hannibal one inf the following movies cheapened the character, IMO.
But it's not definitive, that's the point. It satisfies the audience and narrative with a hypothetical that would reveal much that is true about the character, but maybe not 'what actually happened'. It's using a 'buried mobster' (which we've already received hints about) to do the same thing as Killing Joke.
You're right on Hannibal and John Doe, but this doesn't have to be very extensive at all. He was a mobster, he got buried in a dump, that's all. The real value of an origin is it helps drives the story, so that will set the limits of what we need to know.
You could also argue that the Joker is just a slightly stranger or more intriguing character than Doe or Hannibal, and the audience might feel jipped if they're left without even a crumb to get by on. And I don't think conveying his just present day madness is enough to explain who he is, we need to see how he got there, even if its hypothetical.
