What's The Last Movie You Watched? - - - Part 20

A solid, if miserable, drama with a great lead performance from Denzel, the other characters in it don't really have any development as such and merely serve as bullet points that track Whip's failures, John Goodman's character seems to belong in another movie.

The story never really gets under the skin of the lead character but it does give the viewer conflict; on one hand Whip is an ******* and deserves his jail time, but on the other hand he saved 96 lives that would have been lost if anyone else, sober or not, would have been flying. 7/10

The Last Stand (2013)

Really fun, but not an Arnold Classic, one of those Eraser level entries, which is disappointing given the director. It's a not a slight on the film itself, which I actually wanted to rewatch as soon as it finished. Arnold was rusty as hell in the opening scenes, which I think where filmed the very next day after his EX2 role, but as the film got going, we got the Arnold that we all know and love back. But I think it had to do with Woon's direction, because all the performances where weird. Especially Peter Stormare as a Swedish Texan and Forrest Whitaker as Nicolas Cage.

The action was some of the best I've seen in a non John Hyams movie in a while. Some really fun shootouts car chases and Arnold's best hand to hand fight ever.

There was only a couple things really keeping it from that spot in Arnold's upper pantheon, the script needed a rewrite from someone with more experience and Lionsgate should really stop using that horrid FX company for their blood squibs. Given they where better here than most times, it was still noticeable and distracting.

I suppose I have to address the elephant in the room, being this film's box office. After seeing it, I can very easily tell you why that was. This exact film could've been made for 4 million dollars and starred Stone Cold Steve Austin and Scott Adkins. Anyone being glad it bombed should realise American film making has just lost another potential David Fincher or Nicholas Winding Refn and look at themselves with shame.

Still I had a ****load of fun.

A Better Tomorrow II (1987)

This was a complete mess, most of the time I had no idea what was happening and it didn't help that I watched the (hilariously) dubbed verion. Aside from the climactic action scene which was glorious.

So I finished Green Hornet, and while I didn't hate it, I was right in my previous thoughts of it being not awful, but nothing special either. Rogen was miscast, and although I don't know jack crap about the character, it seemed like the tone for him was just...kinda off.

6/10

Our Idiot Brother - I bought this thinking it would just be another straightforward comedy with Paul Rudd in it, but he really surprised me with how great he was in a dramatic role (though you only see it for about 5 minutes worth of the movie.) I really enjoyed this, and hope others check it out too.

9/10

Boys on the Run

A quirky and at times depressingly realistic portrait of how things in life rarely work out the way he hope.

4/5

Hitchcock
A little too goofy with some downright bizarre moments. You really have to take Hitchcock with a grain of salt.

The Help
While the overall narrative is a familiar one, The Help does bring some freshness with a few laughs.

Match Point
Match Point feels like your run of the mill Allen commentary on relationships, but Woody lays much darker seeds this time around.

Monty Python's Life of Brian
This is the weakest in the Monty Python series. Too loud, with jokes that feel stale.

Jacob's Ladder
A little on the nose at times, but there's moments that feel genuinely unsettling. When you think you have it all figured out, something knocks you off track.

Godzilla
This American version can be visually distracting as Raymond Burr is popped into shots and explains everything that's going on. When Godzilla shows up, **** goes down and you forget that Burr is floating there.

Miss Congeniality
Repeated and predicable jokes that ooze from unlikeable characters.

The Killing
At first you don't know where the story is heading, but slowly The Killing comes together quite nicely with enough humor and suspense to take you to a satisfying finish.

Argo
I don't think I've seen such a film as suspenseful as "Ar, go **** yourself" in a long time.

'Transformers: Dark of the Moon'

Utter nonsense.

The Dark Knight Rises 9.5/10

Conan the Barbarian (2011) 9/10

Skyfall 9.5/10

Good stuff all around.
