Stronger - It's an inspirational film to be sure, but it's actually quite good, well-done, and even emotional. Jake Gyllenhaal is terrific, but Tatiana Maslany is especially great, as her character has to go through a lot of grief. Hopefully her film career is a successful, because she's a superb actress. Great movie too, had me in tears at points. 8.5 / 10

Killing Gunther

It's a extremely low budget mockumentary about a group of hitmen trying to kill the top hitman (aka Arnold). The movie is obviously playing it up for laughs and while I don't think the movie works 100%, it was funny at times. It may look like Arnold Schwarzenegger is headlining the movie, but it's really the director (Taran Killam) who's the main star. The group he's with was alright and everyone has their so called gimmick as a hitman. Schwarzenegger doesn't really show up until the last act which is kinda disappointing. This movie needed a much bigger budget because the effects and set pieces on here was straight up laughable. It also needed a better script, but overall, it's only for Schwarzenegger die hards like myself.

American Made

It's a charming crime thriller that has something to say. This role was almost made for Cruise even through it is based on real events. He's anchoring this movie with ease, it's probably the most fun he's had in a while. They do a decent enough job on covering what the CIA and the White House was doing during the 70s and 80s with the drug war. The movie spends most of it's runtime having fun until things get too crazy which makes the drama more effective. Overall, it was enjoyable from start to finish.

Battle of the Sexes

Enjoyed it. I thought this was a well balanced comedy/drama that is more about the human side of things rather than the competitive side. They really do a great job on selling you it takes place in the early 70s and the Billie Jean King/Bobby Riggs match itself. Emma Stone and Steve Carell were equally great in this and they do a good job giving them more complex roles. Overall, it's one of the better feel-good movies of the year.

Unbreakable

One of the best superhero origin films to date. Very hyped for Glass now. 9/10

Chaplin

I know they soft pedal his infidelities here, but Downey Jr is enormously likeable as Chaplin. The film has the Attenborough stateliness but it never flags and everyone is very persuasive in their roles. I love the scene where Chaplin tells an anti-semite at a party he doesn't have the honor of being a Jew while standing up for his third wife (from whom he was separated by then) and strides out cool as a cucumber.

Mirrors (2008)

I haven't watched the original J-horror version and honestly wasn't going to check out this remake because the ratings On Demand were pretty low but it ended up being much better than I was expecting. Kiefer Sutherland gives a decent performance as a disgraced detective going through a mental breakdown while being haunted by an ominous force that uses mirrors to kill people. I often enjoy horror movies that can make you question whether the danger is actually supernatural or merely psychological and I felt this initially gave me that impression. It's suspenseful and eerie throughout and the ending is climactic with an interesting twist. I thought the use of practical special effects and CGI worked well and I'm looking forward to seeing the original version.

TAXI DRIVER

I am one of the few not impressed with this movie. I'll give it a 7/10 on the joy scale.

Alice through the Looking Glass - I enjoyed it

Iron Giant (1999)

Haven't seen this seemingly forgotten (at least IMO) gem in many years, but of course it holds up. It really should be up there with other memorable classic animated flicks with wider mainstream appreciation.

Tokyo Gore Police (2008)

Still as wonderfully bizarre and ridiculously over the top violent as I remember it.

Despicable Me 3

Oh brother indeed. Just more of the same. With the villain being all decked out in 80s gear, this movie feels like it was selling a mixtape. Gru finding out about his twin brother is as cliche as you can get. The only part I enjoyed was the a couple of scenes with the Minions and the 80s villain. Overall, it's just bleh.

The Little Hours

I had fun with it. This movie is like if they took the concept of Mean Girls and combined it with Drunk History and aired it on IFC. Alison Brie, Kate Micucci, Aubrey Plaza, and the rest of the cast just seems like they were having a lot of fun on set playing nuns. Was not expecting to see Nick Offerman to show up but that was also great to see. The movie is straight up goofy and there's a lot of funny moments through out it. Overall, it's a Monty Python-esque comedy that works for the most part
