Leatherface

It's a movie that tries hard to give horror fans the bare minimum and expect nothing more. This starts out as a remake of the original Texas Chainsaw movie (same setting, same shots, etc). And then quickly, it becomes an insane asylum horror film where you see Leatherface escape with his crew and kidnapped a nurse. After that, it becomes a odd and awkward roadtrip movie which leads to the last act where they set up everything that leads up to the original. It's bland and uninspired for the most part and the acting is what you expect this to be. The only thing this has going for is the practical gore effects and the violence. Overall, it's a horrorflick that would have gone straight to Blockbuster if it was still around.

Possession (1981)

It's an interesting art house horror film to say the least from Andrzej Zulawski. Apparently this was his first and only English speaking movie and you can tell right off the bat. There's a lot of bad over the top acting in here. Even for a movie in the early 80s and even for Sam Neill, it was awful. For at least the first half, the movie becomes almost unbearable to watch. Once they introduce the horror element in and the movie slowly unfolds what the movie really is about, it kinda becomes decent. The best thing I have to say about this movie is the stunning camera work and the scene with Isabelle Adjani in the tunnel. Other than that, it's a movie made for film students and nothing more.

Afflicted

Still holds up as one of my favorite found footage horror films that makes sense the entire way through. It's a shame there isn't a sequel in the works.

THANK YOU FOR YOUR SERVICE -
Performance wise everyone gives serviceable performances (no pun intended) as everyone is equally good. No actor really stands out more than the other. It's more of an ensemble film opposed to the just one actor pulling their weight and carrying a story. It is Miles Teller who is the face of the movie’s marketing, but you have other actors who perform on the same level as him. For God’s sake, Amy Schumer is in this film as a widow, and even her performance puts you on the verge of tears. Ever since*"Whiplash"*Miles Teller has been working his ass off to get that Oscar. That Teller boy really wants to deliver that Oscar-worthy performance to earn him at least a nomination. Though that is not here, he does deliver a good one.*If Teller got a nomination, cool. He does have several “for your consideration” moments that'll have you in shambles, but I wouldn't bet money on it.

THX 1138 (1971)

TCM played a bunch of classic dystopian movies last night and this is the only one I hadn't seen before. Impressive directorial debut with an eerie mood, great casting and interesting social commentary. The visuals at times are both disturbing and awe inspiring as is the bleak world building. The story is set in a future dystopia where human are devoid of emotions, self expression and sexuality are banned, while computers run everyone's day-to-day lives. After a man stops taking his mandatory daily sedatives, he impregnates his roommate, gets convicted of being a deviant, then escapes becoming a fugitive in order to find her. It ends with a suspenseful chase sequence that has plenty of tense moments.

Columbus. Very good two-hander between John Cho and Haley Lu Richardson.

Battle of The Sexes - Really dug this. Good performances, and the overall vibe, tone, and the way in the "true story" was told, I really liked. Basically it was a good movie. - 8 / 10

Thor: Ragnarok

9/10 but it could go a bit higher in the near future. Doesn't have too many flaws, to be honest.

Pretty Poison (1968)

I forgot I had already seen this before I set the reminder timer but it was still interesting to rewatch it. A delusional young man gets out of a mental institution and starts a relationship with a high school girl but quickly gets in over his head after she murders a night watchman and then her own mother. It was kind of interesting watching Anthony Perkins play CIA and Tuesday Weld gives an exceptional performance as her character gets creepier throughout the film.

The Mist (Black and White)

As with every year in October, I have to watch this in black and white. It's a masterpiece of horror that gets me every time.

Jigsaw

I'm a fan of the Saw series, but I recognize it's flaws (mostly after 3, it becomes pure fan fiction). But I gotta say, I was kinda surprised on how much I enjoyed this. Just visually, it looks and feels different than the previous Saw movies, there's no crazy edits or murky green and blue hues. Spierig Brothers did a decent job on trying to go back to the mystery side of Saw rather than torture porn for 90 mins. The traps and especially gore are extremely well done. This actually reminds me more of Saw II than anything. That being said... and in classic Saw fashion, there's a couple of twists towards the end and the ending itself which I have mixed feelings on. One of which threw me off and while it's inexplicable, I wish they had gone through with it. It would have made me look forward to potential sequels. Overall, it's pretty good and thanks to the Spierig Brothers, they managed to make something decent out of a dead franchise.
