What Ever Happened to Baby Jane? (1962)

What_Ever_Happened_to_Baby_Jane%3F_%281962%29.jpg

I've been meaning to watch this for awhile and finally found the time and opportunity to watch it on TCM On Demand. It's a long film to sit through but it's pretty entertaining. Honestly it doesn't get better than Bette Davis and Joan Crawford chewing the scenery together. There are moments on screen where it feels like you can see the real life tension between the two actors and their rivalry itself is pretty interesting. Davis plays a bratty child star grown into a hopeless alcoholic who believes she is responsible for crippling her sister and at times her performance is haunting. There's this great contrast between the sisters; Blanche is meek, kind and disabled while Jane is ... the devil. There's also a great performance from Victor Buono who played King Tut in the 60s Batman TV series. The build up to the climax is incredibly tense and suspenseful and the reveal at the end is genuinely moving. I can't recommend this one enough!

Suburbicon

It's George Clooney attempt at trying to deliver some social satire of suburbia in 50s' America. Only problem is it's trying to do too many things that don't really correlate with one another. There's some parts I enjoyed like Oscar Isaac's zany performance and the mobsters who are after Matt Damon. I feel like that's where the Coen Brothers were at their best when writing this. The racial drama subplot almost feels like an afterthought after it was introduced. I would have loved to see a movie where it was just about that. Overall, the movie is a mixed bag of unfocused and enjoyable.

Victoria & Abdul

I really don't understand why critics liked this. It's essentially the royal British version of Driving Miss Daisy only there's more emphasis on the soap opera drama and racism. I'll say it starts out pretty interesting enough. You wonder if the imperialism of India will play a major role when Victoria and Abdul have their culture clash. But after a while it was clear the movie wasn't about that at all, it was subservient to Queen Victoria and her needs in her final years. Abdul isn't really a fleshed out character and the things they have him do is pretty grating. I'll say Adeel Akhtar and his sarcastic comedy was the only one in this movie that kept me from absolutely hating it.

War for the Planet of the Apes - 9.5/10

A gloriously epic finale to the trilogy. Bad Ape might be my favourite character in a movie, ever.

Brawl in Cell Block 99

Enjoyed it for what it was. The movie pretty much acts like 70s exploitation film that focuses on the brutal and gory fight scenes. While many people praise Vince Vaughn's acting in here because he's not playing a comedian, I thought he was just okay. I've seen him play serious before, so it wasn't as shocking to me. With his looks, it kinda feels like a prequel to Wilson Fisk from Daredevil. Jennifer Carpenter did a decent job I suppose, but Don Johnson was fantastic. Storywise I thought it was a bit too slow, however the first hour did a decent job on showing you how deep and crazy incarceration really is. The main star of this movie really is the gory fight scenes, because it feels like something right out of Oldboy. The director also directed Bone Tomahawk and you can tell by the practical gore effects. Overall, it's a solid exploitation film that would make a killing in the Grindhouse days.

Warcraft

Boring, unfocused and simply mediocre. What the hell went wrong, Duncan Jones? Fans of the franchise might enjoy it, but I found the story uninvolving and confusing and the characters bland and one-dimensional.
