I watched that for the first time recently and have to say I'd go along with that. If it hadn't looked so great it would have been lower.

Some of the core DC Super Hero's come together and are all in as they take on Steppenwolf an alien military officer from Apokolips and his army of Parademons.

One of the things i loved about this film is how it reminded me of one of my favorite DC comics mini series Crisis on Infinite Earths.
The characters as individuals:Ben Affleck as Bruce Wayne / Batman: Great and i hope Affleck returns for a couple of more films.
Ezra Miller as Barry Allen / Flash did a fine job,sure some of his humor didnt work but it never reaches an obnoxious levels.In fact he had key dramatic scenes that really worked.Jason Momoa as Arthur Curry / Aquamanroviding some bad boy weight ,the underwater sequence including Amber Heard as Mera really worked a nice bit of what's to come in next years Aquaman movie
Gal Gadot as Diana Prince / Wonder Woman: she just completely owns the role now,not one false note from her.To the people saying she was objectified in the film,please take a seat !!
Ray Fisher as Victor Stone / Cyborg: i was actually surprisingly found this character the most grounded and compelling good job Mr.Fisher
The banter between the characters,how they challenged and questioned each others motives was on point !!
The scenes with the Amazons and Atlanteans really worked for me.
I enjoyed some of the action sequences,and THANK YOU,THANK YOU to the writers and producers for giving a key character a personality !!!!

Some of the CGI was way off,so much so it was distracting at times.
Ciarán Hinds as Steppenwolf turns in some great voice work but the character was just cookie cutter and the CGI didnt help matters.
The CGI used on another character was pretty bad like some weird dark tan or shadow.
Im not sure why an exec at Warner Brothers demanded that the film should only be two hours.
If a movie is flowing fine and entertaining me ,i dont care if it's 3 hours !!
That decision hurt the film in some ways because i could tell where the cuts were made and it felt very rushed.

DC has taken a step in the right direction with JL,I hope they continue down this path and work out any kinks that would alter their course.

Denzel Washington is the title character Roman J. Israel, Esq. a savant,who may be suffering from Asperger syndrome is a civil rights attorney who is brilliant but not a people person.He works out of the office and advices but never goes to the court room leaving that to his partner in the firm.Unforseen occurences thrust him out of the office and into the court room and another law firm with some tactics he finds unsettling.

The quirks of Israel worked for me and this is helped by another great performance from Denzel Washington.The character is on the right path of ethics and morality,and he impresses his new boss Colin Farrell as George Pierce and an activist Carmen Ejogo as Maya
but then the movie flip flops his character makes a decision that makes no sense,in fact even his character cant explain why he makes such an insane move.

I dont know if the writers ran out of ideas and decided to make a change to the film so they could try to wring out some kind of ultra dramatic moments,the whole thing felt forced and it actually frustrated me.
It's always a sad thing to watch a film go completely off the rails.

The Passion of Joan of Arc (1928)

I've seen parts of this before but never watched the whole thing entirely so I was glad to find it on TCM On Demand. The recent digital restoration looks so clean and crisp it almost doesn't feel like it was filmed 90 years ago. The remastered score not only fits the pacing incredibly well but also compliments the imagery perfectly and even intensifies certain moments. The story itself is both compelling and tragic as it recounts real life record of the trial of Jeanne d'Arc where she is tortured and eventually sentenced to death by being burned alive at the stake. One of the things that makes this film unique is that it's almost entirely composed of close-up shots and the plot is often carried through the facial expressions of the actors. At times the performance by Renée Jeanne Falconetti is so deeply moving it's difficult not to be emotionally affected by it in some manner. The word "epic" doesn't justly describe its climactic ending. A beautiful treasure of the film medium and a must see for silent movie fans.

Feared that it would become laborious on a rewatch but it held up very well. Still the closest that we'll ever come to a film adaptation of RE4.

Mudbound

It's a tremendous film that deals with southern family drama and war. It's a great look inside how race relations were in 40s Mississippi when WWII starts. This doesn't go for cheap sentimentality and the multiple narration works wonders for this movie. It also takes a dark turns towards the end which I didn't see coming. This wouldn't work without a great ensemble cast, everybody has their moment to shine. While the movie focuses on multiple angles, it's mainly about Jason Mitchell and Garrett Hedlund who went off to war and came back. The scenes between them were amazing. The other highlight for me was Rob Morgan (better known as Turk on the Marvel Netflix shows) who has a few monologues that were absolutely amazing. I didn't know Mary J. Blige was in this and she was unrecognizable. Overall, it's one of the best movies of the year and I hope it gets some recognition. And I also can't wait to see what Dee Rees directs next.
