Now Chastain, two years younger than Theron is too old to play Carol? You see where this is leading? I'm sorry that very talented actresses, world class talents whose presence automatically give the character credibility with the audience don't gibe with the imagined ages some have of the comic book version of the character but it seems this issue is really blinding some to what the actresses being disqualified for their age bring to the table.
I think age can and should be a factor for certain roles. I myself think Deathstroke shouldn't be played by an actor closing in on 60. Someone like Pitt or Reeves are older but easily look younger than they are and are in phenomenal shape. I think they could offer more to the role than say a Steven Lang who is 62, especially since Deathstroke is a Capt. America type fighter. Also, while Deathstroke has white hair it's not because he's over 60. Add that up and yeah, an actor in his late 50's to early 60's probably isn't the best fit for a DCCU Deathstroke that we'd all like to see go up against BatFleck the way he did in the Arkham game trailer on the big screen. But disqualifying Chastain and Theron because they are late 30's? When both are in great shape (Theron slightly better in that dept. mind you) and could pass for far younger easily? These are super talented women with bona fides that would add weight to their on screen personas if chosen for the part of Carol.
If the bone of contention is that in someone's personal head canon or even EXPLICITLY stated by comics (something I'm not sure is even so) history of the character is that she's closing in on 30... So what? These are the films and as Marvel has shown again and again they disregard fealty to the books whenever they please.
I want a Carol that can be a commanding presence even around Captain America. I want her played by an actress that can go toe toe in a screen with Downey's Stark. I want a Captain Marvel that when she threatens the bad guys with a beat down the audience buys it. Some of these younger actresses, while pleasing to the eyes just don't have that. Chastain and Theron do, in Spades, but this age thing seems to be blinding some to that. Hopefully even if Marvel goes with a younger actress they keep in mind that Carol needs the attributes I listed, else this isn't going to be very pretty, even if the actress chosen is.
