Lex Luthor is a must, he could even use Superman killing Zod, somebody of his kind, as publicity against him

Yeah, I really want to see Metallo. How do you guys feel about Ben Foster as Metallo? He's great at playing bottom-feeder criminals with a screw loose.

Brainiac would have to be the top choice for a sequel. They would be made to choose anyone else!

Just please not luthor, at least as the main villain. It's been done!

I wouldn't expect Luthor to be the only villain. From what we've heard from Goyer/Snyder, it sounds like we'll have the powerful business man from the animated series. That tells me that it won't seem recycled and he'll pair up with a physical threat.

Don't know if anyone's mentioned this but (if Brainiac IS in the sequel) I'd love to see a Metropolis upgrade, like we saw in the Superman Y2K storyline.

Braniac could come to Earth initially as a hero, bringing us new tech and knowledge for our world, giving us a free upgrade, until he realizes the Last Kryptonian is very valuable in some way, possibly on the intergalactic auction circuit (also taken from a non-Brainiac storyline about 5 years ago). Although Nolan/Goyer would probably think of something a bit more creative than an auction house.

Mid-way into the movie, Lex could use his knowledge of the atmostphere-changer that we saw in MOS to build a portable version (calling it "Kryptonite"). He places this device in a terminator-like robot of his called Metallo and sends it after Superman.

I'd love to see Mxyzptlk in one of the movies. I've also always liked Shrapnel for some reason (a robot whose power is to explode into pieces and regroup, injuring those around him IIRC).

Lex is a necessity, but there needs to be a second villain and for me the two most convincing options are Metallo or Brainiac. Which of those two is your preference roughly corresponds to how big of a role you think Luthor should have in the sequel.

John Corben as Metallo would be a tool developed by Lex, thereby painting Lex as the primary villain. But with Brainiac, he's such a powerful villain that Lex can seem relatively helpless in comparison.

I think Brainiac would be too similar to the alien invasion plot of MOS, so Metallo is starting to seem like a good choice. So yeah, TANK's suggestion paralleling the format of the Dark Knight trilogy format is a great idea and I'm basically in total agreement at this point.

lex and metallo. the story would be lex rebuilds metropolis. he's looked at as the real savior of metropolis, and lexcorp gains government contracts to create a superman deterrent. people love lex and are very wary of superman since he only brings destruction. what they don't know is that lex is financing terrorism in the form of intergang. lexcorp builds a super suit piloted by john corben. he gets into an accident on it's unveiling, and lex decides to rebuild him using intergang technology. during all of this lois and clark are working on a story to expose lex as a villain. in the end lex walks away, and corben is imprisoned. lex is transported somewhere and meets intergang's technology supplier, darkseid(or steppenwolf to lead up to darkseid).

I like this idea. Having Lex secretly funding Intergang too would be brilliant which in turn would later lead to Darkseid and his goons etc. Hope to also see Dan Turpin and Maggie Sawyer in the sequels too.

I'm all for Brainiac making an appearance somewhere but with what we've seen in MoS with the tentacles etc, it may prove a little difficult. But if it's shown that he is NOT from Krypton then I'll still support him in showing up whenever that may be. And having seen an open pod in the ship that was discovered, could have been Kara that escaped?! Anyway here is what I'd like to see for the next couple movies....

MoS2: Lex Luthor (behind the scenes)/Metallo/Bruno Mannheim and Intergang
MoS3: Lex Luthor (in full capacity)/Brainiac?! Also hoping that this film could introduce the new Batman as well making this a World's Finest movie.

I'm not too fussed with Doomsday at all to be honest.

Here's a different way of discussing this topic:

Which villians DON'T I think will/should be in the sequel, and why:

Doomsday: Powerful and scary but not intelligent. Maybe as a henchman for the half-way mark. A similar villain is Bizarro.

Darkseid: Another Conqueror of Worlds in 2015 next to Thanos? If they do go ahead with it, it would require a far more intricate and intelligent story than that (but we know Goyer/Nolan love their intelligent villians). Also in this category is Brainiac.

Metallo: Would lurrve to see him in a movie, but he's Earth-based, which sounds less exciting and gives MOS 2 a smaller scope IMO (sort of like Parasite). Superman needs a bigger threat than a Terminator or the Blob. Though they may also work well for mid-way villians.

Mxyzptlk: Very, very interesting if they go this route, but we'll fall into the same trap of Superman not punching things. The movie may also get a bit too fantasy-like, which is against what they're trying to do by making things more real.

So I think for the rest of the trilogy(?) it's gonna be (in descending order of possibility):

Lex Luthor
Brainiac
Darkseid
Doomsday
Metallo
Parasite
Bizarro
Mxyzptlk

Luthor is a given, I'm sure. Goyer's already said that he'd need to be "intelligent", and I'm sure it would be a writer's dream to come up with such a character. I don't think there's *anyone* saying they don't want a Lex because of Hackman being in most of the Reeve movies. If they did say that, it would boggle my mind.

Again, I truly doubt any Earth-based villian will be the main villain for any of the movies henceforth. They really did kick this franchise off huge. Which non-Superman DC intergalactic villain is a possibility? Any of Green Lantern's perhaps?

I don't think an Earth-based storyline is out of the question. I think Lex needs to be in it, and my preference would be to see Lex working to turn public opinion against Superman so that he could ultimately run a presidential campaign on an anti-Superman/anti-extraterrestrial platform. There are many paths to do this. Metallo. Intergang. Striking a deal with Darksied or Brainiac.

I think the way to top MOS isn't to make the villain larger or stronger than Zod, but the make the plot more intricate and exciting. The villain doesn't have to be alien for this. I'm not against alien, of course. I would love to see Brainiac or Darkseid, but I won't be disappointed is they decided to hold off on them for the time being. A good story can be told with just Lex and Metallo or Toyman or even Intergang.

I think you're absolutely right on the latter point, but you have to consider what opportunities Superman will have to do super-powered stuff. The problem with Lex as the sole antagonist is that the action sequences may fall into a rut of plane-catching and ship-hauling. Those are powerful motifs, but they may be getting tired.

Wow! I completely forgot about that storyline. I'd love to see Lex as president, and it would give Nolan/Goyer the chance to include so many allusions to the US presidency.

My thoughts exactly. With the immigration debate going on now, Goyer and company have a lot to pull from if they choose to categorize Lex as running for president on anti-extratterrestrial immigration platform. If they go this route, I want Lex to win. I would love to see Lex as president in a future Justice League film. It would up the stakes and make the plot more intricate.

Lex with Braniac it should be Brainiac the Colluan not the android. He should be a collector of world, info, etc. It will introduce Kandor and info about Kara.Of course with Brainiac the 3 LOSH will be involve somehow. In the ending a Kalibak entrance with Para Demons.

I think Swinton would be best as she has that androgynous look.

If we're going out of our way to present Brianiac in the form of a female human, I don't think "androgynous" is what we should be looking for, though that being said, Tilda Swinton is a magnificent actor. I would love her in the role.

The only thing that give me pause is that if Brainiac takes a human form, the comics have always presented him as a man named Milton Fine. I for one, have absolutely little care if they tweak it a bit. Turn Milton into a Molly. After all, Brainiac is generless. It's human form/host is irrelevant and could be quite an unexpected twist if they go that route.

I would go with Metallo and Lex pulling his strings. Save Brainiac for 3.

Can someone explain to me what it is that's so great about Brainiac?

Everyone seems to love him and wants him on the big screen, but why? What would be the amazing storyline with Brainiac as the main villain?

I mean, he's AI. He doesn't have a 'personality', or any quality I've ever particularly found enjoyable in stories.

Yes, he's a formidable opponent and could have an 'army'. But personally I just find him kind of boring :(

Maybe I just haven't read/seen the best stories. I dunno.

Brainiac is responsible for shrinking and stealing Kandor, the capital city of Superman's home planet Krypton. Brainiac is also referred to as "The Collector of Worlds" with his advance alien tech he can share some to Lex and then we will see an armored Lex vs. Supes and he can time travel too so a cameo of LOSH would be great. He has an array of weapons like the force field belt, shrinking rays capable of reducing cities, posses others, absorb info from other beings, creating and manipulating computer systems, equal to Superman inside his ship.

For me, the appeal of Brainiac is partly visual. I like the concept of him being symbiotic with his ship. You have the sense of him being an infinite intelligence residing in both an alien mechanical body and in an infinite robotic mass. I think you should get a sense of wonder and terror from Brainiac's ship, in the sense that your surroundings are in themselves an intelligent, sentient being. Everything is unknown, and watchful, like the derelict spacecraft in Alien.

For the record, I am most interested in seeing Brainiac, Metallo, and/or Doomsday appear in either the next film, as well as Lex Luthor, of course.

That being said, I was wondering if anyone here was willing to seriously consider Mxyzptlk as a legitimate threat? In pretty much all cartoon media, Mxyzptlk has been a comical villain, not a real threat, and even Smallville only gave the guy one single episode.

Still, the guy (or imp or whatever) is a classic villain and even though the fight may not be as visually exctiting as Superman vs. Zod, there is no doubt that his magical ability would allow him to hold his own. Sure, saying his name backwards is campy and it's sort of become a pop culture joke by this point, but could Snyder and the team redeem the character? I think it's a possibility, especially if you want to save the heavy hitters like Brainiac and Darkseid for MOS 3 and JL and beyond.

EDIT: Superman: Whatever Happened to the Man of Tomorrow is a good example of Mxyzptlk as a true villaiin more than just a prankster
