What's the consensus on Kraven?
My favorite. But not as the first villain. I'd like a seasoned Spidey going up against Kraven

Use elements of Mark Millar's and Bendis' portryal of Norman Osborn. Have him create and bankroll Supervillains, until he becomes the Green Goblin.
That could make it become another "Oscorp villain factory" problem again. I'd prefer the villains to be their own creations. I want Shocker to create his own suit and his own gauntlets. I want Mysterio to be his own boss. I want Doc Ock to be the cause of his own experiment. Same goes for Lizard. Etc.
The only ones I want to see created by someone else are Scorpion, Rhino, perhaps Sandman etc.

You pretty much nailed all the reasons I'd want him as the first solo villain, too.Oscorp villain factory is too much on the nose, specially if EVERYONE including a special effects mysterious guy was "created" in a lab...
I don't mind that plot point if it makes sense for the characters and overall direction of the overarching plot (it worked for the Spectacular Spiderman show but it didn't for the movie reboot) but even in a setting like that it only makes sense to tie characters that could possibly have anything to do with Oscorp instead of making it lazily connected to everything evil...
This is also why I think Mysterio is the better choice because it clearly breaks the pattern for villain creation in a Spiderman movie:
- He isn't a result of a lab accident.
- He hasn't got anything to do with Oscorp or any kind of lab for that matter.
- He has a "power set" that's away from the science themes of the world (at least at first glance, he looks like he could be doing magic)
Except one is an actual sorcerer and the other is just a fake out?
I've always liked the "unstable reality star" origin, where he's a professional hunter of "both beasts and man" and an international celebrity. He secretly uses special herbs that increase his strength and senses, but slowly erode his sanity. When J.J.J. hires him to bring in Spidey, who publically humiliates him on their first encounter, Kraven finally snaps.Would anyone want a Kraven the Hunter interpretation which would make him a hired professional hitman of sorts?
My only gripe with the character is that he may be a tad too campy if he's just this big macho man that hunts because that's what he does. Rationalizing him and writing him with a more mundane purpose would make it a little better for me, even if he keeps the trademark lion coat as a pet peeve of his... Even so, I would lampshade the heck out of it by having other characters comment on how weird this guy is. Preferably right before he murders them for insulting him :P
He would still keep his shtick, lion suit, thrill of the hunt and all, but the difference is that he is the guy you hire to hunt your enemies down. He hunts for sport and the money is just an added plus for him. Kingpin could be involved with that or something...
