The Amazing Spider-Man 2 Who would be the best MJ?

There's really nothing about her personality (extroverted, wild, feisty, etc.) that's specific to one race. Honestly, I'd prefer that they try to capture the aesthetic of the source material as with Peter, Gwen, Harry, and Flash, but I wouldn't mind if they wanted to change the racial/ethnic background of the character to African American or Hispanic provided that the chosen actress really is best suited for the role and capturing the spirit of the character and it isn't just change for the sake of change.

I hope that they hold auditions for the role like they did for some of the other ones. Get a bunch of young actress (some that fit the mold and some that don't at first glance) and have them compete.
This I agree with this. I tried to word my post better but ended up failing and I did call my own self out on that and I also have to say that i've definitely have come to liking MJ in the comics alot more, its hard not like her

Can we please just keep as close as possible to the source material?

Yeesh! First Johnny Storm and now MJ?

The obvious and fair question is why? What is gained by changing the source material?

I knew you would say that

It doesnt matter anymore just as long as the actress embodies who she is

While I can see the argument for "it shouldn't matter what ethnicity the actress has", I personally don't agree. When it's a comic book character who has always been portrayed one way, it just doesn't make any sense to change it. In fact, if they do change it, I can't help but think that they are doing it because it's more politically correct to have a mixed group, and that it will appeal to some people more, who otherwise wouldn't have cared. Sure, it's not a biopic of Nelson Mandela where you kinda HAVE to get the look of the actor right, but there is no reason to change the ethnicity of a comic book character just like that.

But it's a fine line. With someone like Electro, it doesn't bother me as much as they did it, because he is a villain, and considering the look of him (both in this movie and the comics), it doesn't really matter from a visual perspective. We rarely see Electro unmasked or without the electricity in the comics, so it's not as big of a change. With someone like MJ, who is the big love interest, it would just be so weird if they changed it.

If someone can be embody the character better then they deserve a shot no matter what
think outside the box

You know what its pretty interesting when I went to marvel wiki or someothers it doesn't state MJ's race

I just don't see a reason to change it, that's all. I find most of the excuses or reasons for doing it to be pretty weak, and they don't make any sense. You could apply all the "as long as the story doesn't change and the character stays the same" to biopic movies as well.

There is no change because in the official marvel page her race isnt suggested

Biopics are based on real people, not fictional characters created at a time when it would have been financial suicide to have an interracial romance in your top seller.

Didn't Peter have a fling with Glory Grant in the 70's? And Michele Gonzales just a few years back.

Anyway, of course I would prefer that they try to stick to the source on this one, but if an actress of a different race/ethnicity really is the best at capturing the essence of the character, I definitely wouldn't complain.

Ok, so then let's get Channing Tatum to play Jim Rhodes/War Machine.

How about Sam Worthington to playT'Challa/Black Panther.

Or how about when they do a Cloak and Dagger movie we get Tom Cruise for Tyrone?

Maybe they should change Falcon from Anthony Mackie to Bradley Cooper.

And you know Night Thrasher, why not make the leader in a New Warriors movie Joseph-Gorden Levitt.

And since so many want to see Prowler in a Spider-Man movie, let's get Brad Pitt to play Hobie Brown.

The obvious point is that this is not a racial issue. This is an issue about sticking to the canon. Yes, it's ok to make a change of this nature to some villains or minor characters, such as Electro or even Nick Fury. But even those are sticking to canon, just not 616, but instead Ultimate:

But the main point is that certain characters are too important to mess around with by changing their race, sex, etc.

MJ would most definitely fall into this category!

If it's not a racial issue, why are you making it one?

And btw, Ultimate Electro wasn't black either.

No. Peter and Glory were neighbors, but they never went out.

I'd say some characters are too important to get hung up on something like race.

Sometimes I'm okay with race changes and sometimes I'm not. I don't really know what makes me approve of one change and not another. Something just has to click, I guess.

I'm just going by facts and especially marve'ls home page and info on characters

I feel the same.

Nvm. You're right. They flirted with each other but never actually dated. Just friends.

Perhaps they'll introduce Glory, Betty, Deb, or Liz to act as a 'buffer' between Gwen and MJ. Just someone for Peter to go on a couple dates with without there being much of a relationship or deep romantic connection. I'm hoping that they'll really start to expand Peter's social circle as the franchise progresses.

Who cared about Electro period? Not hating but I wouldn't consider him a huge Spidey foe that everyone loved. It would be alright to change his race is the point I'm making since he's a less known Spidey villain.

Also a fun fact: Electro is bi in the comics and I ain't talking race.

At one time I would have said Isla Fisher or Alicia Witt. I dont know who these young actors are these days. :csad:

Don't feel bad neither do I at least I don't pay too much attention to actresses now a days

Me neither. Do you remember Nikki Cox from the old NBC show, Las Vegas?

Found this on tumblr:

Wizard Magazine’s Spider-Man movie Illustration by Brian Stelfreeze.

When Sam Raimi was announced as the director of the Spider-Man movie, it was speculated that Leonardo DiCaprio would play Peter Parker and that Nikki Cox would play Mary Jane Watson. Wizard Magazine ran an article with this illustration with the casting speculation.

Wasn't Alicia Witt considered for SM1 before the role went to Dunst?

Anyway, I read somewhere that it was James Cameron who wanted Leo and Nikki Cox as Pete and MJ for his 90's Spider-man film before the project was scrapped. I always wonder what it would have been like had they been cast. They definitely would have made one heck of a good looking couple, that's for sure.

I know :hehe:

Margot has it all. She's got the sassiness, the humour, the warmth - all those qualities to pull off all the sides of MJ.

But it is a question of whether or not she would work good with Andrew?
