The Amazing Spider-Man 2 Who would be the best MJ?

I do remember seeing that picture. I dont know how serious the DiCaprio talk was but I do remember it. Nikki would have made a darn fine MJ.

Wasn't Alicia Witt considered for SM1 before the role went to Dunst?

I think she was. She may have been too tall to star with Tobey though. Seems like she is on the tall side.

DiCaprio was definitely going to play Peter in Cameron's Spider-Man. He's mentioned it before in interviews. They talked about making the movie together, when they were shooting Titanic.

To my knowledge, that's the only piece of casting he's ever confirmed but for what it's worth, Nikki Cox did have a cameo in T2.

...and I agree.

Circa late 90's, during her run on Unhappily Ever After, Nikki would have been a pitch perfect Mary Jane. :hrt:

I sill think Karen could be Mary Jane and be a good one. She's only in one GOTG. There's still a chance..

Nikki was quite the redheaded beauty in Unhappily Ever After. Funny and down to earth too.

Shame that her career never really took off after the 90's. I wonder if the botched plastic surgery had an effect on that.

I know :hehe:

Margot has it all. She's got the sassiness, the humour, the warmth - all those qualities to pull off all the sides of MJ.

But it is a question of whether or not she would work good with Andrew?

 If she can hold her own with Leo, she can hold her own with Andrew, but yes, the chemistry would have to be there, which is something that you can only tell by having actors read together.

She's only an inch taller than Dunst, but maybe that was a little too tall. Also, I think Dunst was an up and coming star at the time after Bring it On and the Virgin Suicides.

Don't know if this is legit, but I found this statement that's supposedly from Alicia about auditioning for the role:

...I was one of the initial finalists for the role and auditioned for sam raime opposite tobey macguire (along with mena suvari, jamie king, etc etc) but none of us got the role. much later, they auditioned kirsten dunst and she got it. but of course it would've been a blast! (and thank you!)

I'd literally cry out with joy and marvel if they both worked together and say
"There's the Peter and MJ we've all been waiting for" :D

I just hope producers don't say
"There's no way Andrew could bag someone as hot as Margot. It wouldn't look realistic"

Anyway, I read somewhere that it was James Cameron who wanted Leo and Nikki Cox as Pete and MJ for his 90's Spider-man film before the project was scrapped. I always wonder what it would have been like had they been cast. They definitely would have made one heck of a good looking couple, that's for sure.

I read Cameron had an eye on Edward Furlong for Peter. Didn't know he was aware of DiCaprio that far back.

While I can see the argument for "it shouldn't matter what ethnicity the actress has", I personally don't agree. When it's a comic book character who has always been portrayed one way, it just doesn't make any sense to change it. In fact, if they do change it, I can't help but think that they are doing it because it's more politically correct to have a mixed group, and that it will appeal to some people more, who otherwise wouldn't have cared. Sure, it's not a biopic of Nelson Mandela where you kinda HAVE to get the look of the actor right, but there is no reason to change the ethnicity of a comic book character just like that.

But it's a fine line. With someone like Electro, it doesn't bother me as much as they did it, because he is a villain, and considering the look of him (both in this movie and the comics), it doesn't really matter from a visual perspective. We rarely see Electro unmasked or without the electricity in the comics, so it's not as big of a change. With someone like MJ, who is the big love interest, it would just be so weird if they changed it.

This entire argument is a load of festering feculent crap. And I do not mean that as a personal attack, but this "rebuttal" is common on the Internet amongst those whom are not aware of their own prejudices and hypocrisy.

R'as Al Ghul has been portrayed one way since 1971, yet no one seemed stirred to complain about an Irish actor portraying this otherwise Arabian man. When a French actress was cast to play Talia Al Ghul, a Arabian woman, no one was sore about how it would be a drastic change to a big love interest for Batman.

In the Spawn film, Chapel, a Black male, became Priest, a White female. Terry, Al Simmons' best friend, was changed from a Black male to a White male. Was anyone pitching a fit about that? Why is it that people complain when White characters are changed, but when non-White characters are changed, the arguments and rebuttals are non-existent. These are fictional characters. their ethnic composition doesn't matter unless it is integral to their characterization (e.g. The Blue Marvel, Colossus, Kitty Pryde). Nothing about Mary Jane Watson requires her to be White. She could be Asian and could still be a party girl. She could be Black and still be a gorgeous model. Whiteness has nothing to do with WHO MJ is as a person.

As for potential MJs, I have a rather short list that in all likelihood features suggestions that have already been mentioned by other posters.

- Christina Hendricks: Yes she is an older woman, but Tobey Maguire was in his 31 when he played Peter Parker in Spider-Man 3. Hendricks is a talented actress with enough range to bring some potency to this role that has often been passed off as eye candy.

- Mary Elizabeth Winestead: Winestead has a proven record for being able to portray a diverse array of female leads. Though she is known for being a bit of a "scream queen", her portrayal as both Ramona in Scott Pilgrim and Mary Lincoln in AL:Vampire Hunter has demonstrated her ability to play living wife or kick-ass girlfriend.

- Jamie Chung: After a fairly strong showing in Once Upon a Time as Mulan and as Nima in Premium Rush, Chung has conveyed her ability to be as emotional as a role demands and to be an awesome companion. And an awesome Mary Jane Watson should be a companion for Peter Parker, not just his eye candy or his subordinate.

- Zoe Saldana: After her epic portrayal of a no-nonsense yet lovingly devoted version of Uhura, I can easily imagine Saldana stepping into the role of the post-party girl era MJ with ease and elegance.

Ya know, I always thought Lindsay Lohan would've been a good MJ before she became the Lindsay Lohan of present.

This lis is all kinds of messy.

So, let's see what you're saying...

You bring up R'as Al Ghul and how Liam was cast and he's not an Arabic. Ok,l lets look at pictures:

And now Liam's portrayal:

Actually, looks like they did the character justice. Although Arabic R'as wasn't dipicted as dark skinned in the comics from what I'm seeing, and since Liam didn't play this character with an Irish brogue, I think hey did good!

Next you go the same route using Talia. Ok, again, let's look at the pics:

And now Marion's version:
-Talia-bane-and-talia-al-ghul-31783746-333-500.jpg

So again, I'm not seeing a problem. Looks to me like the casting director got the look down pretty well. And again, it's not like this French actress was using her French accent.

Now you kind of go off into "who cares' land with Chapel from Spawn becoming Priest and Al Simmon's best friend.

You may not agree, but there is a huge difference between Spiderman and Spawn. Especially for the GA. The GA knows who Spiderman is, and generally even knows who MJ is. The average GA would have no idea who or what Spawn is. So really, this is a bad argument.

Now, when Nick Fury was changed, there may have been a little bit of rumblings, but for the most part it wasn't that big of a deal. Why, because Nick Fury is (or at least was) kind of peripheral. Spiderman is not, nor is Gwen or MJ. The look of these characters matter, and that's what this argument is about, their look.

Many of us had issues with Dunst's MJ and it, of course, had nothing to do with race, as it doesn't now. It was look. That's why a Nikki Cox (back in the day) would have been great. Because she had the look. Why did so many of us have issues with Shaelene? Because of the look they went with when filming. Again, nothing to do with race. Now, people like you, are trying to turn this into a race issue when it's not about race.

Again, it's solely about look. MJ needs to look like MJ, and that means an actress that looks like this:

Mary-Jane-in-Amazing-Spider-Man-23.jpg

And not this:

I just find it funny you hold up Campbell's work as the way MJ needs to look. A few covers makes his rendition quintessential?

I am far more concerned about characterization. It doesn't matter how capable the actress if the script and direction are wonky.

The funny thing is I went to marvel's page and looked MJ up but as for her race its not listed
Isn't that something

Actually no.

I can't speak for everyone, but my issues with Dunst had little to do with her looks and more to do with the way that Raimi approached the character (ie: her characterization, personality, and development throughout the trilogy). Sure, I think she had the potential to make a great looking MJ and I was a little disappointed that the potential wasn't fully taken advantage of on film. However, even if she was styled to the nines, it wouldn't have changed what was (in my view) a poor adaptation of one of my favorite characters.

It's great to have an actor/actress that physically looks like the comic book character brought to life and of course I'd love to have a certain type of aesthetic for MJ, but it's definitely not solely about the look. I'd prefer an actress who is capable of capturing the spirit of the character over some 1:1 physical representation any day. Not saying that they can't 'hit the jackpot' and find both, but no need to be so closed minded in terms of casting choices of different races.

Also, you do seem to be pretty attached to that one illustration by Campbell. lol

Such hypocrisy from you.

Just out of curiosity...why?

First of all, when Spawn the film came out, Spawn was a top ten comic book, a popular HBO animated series and a popular line of toys. Spawn #1 sold ~1.7 million copies, which is quite a feat when you can consider that X-Men Vol. 2 #1 sold ~3 million copies (the Guinness record holder for most copies ever sold for a comic book). Either you don't know jack crap about Spawn, are too young to remember how the 90s actually occurred or just want to make stuff up to suit your case. The Spawn film was a box office hit, grossing more than twice its budget. And as it stands, Spawn had quite a bit of controversy surrounding the whitewashing of key characters to the story.

Second of all, you can hear Liam Neeson's accent the entire time. It isn't as if he pulled a Hugh Laurie or an Andrew Garfield and adopted the appropriate accent for the nationality of the character he is portraying. You hear his same accent as you hear in all of his roles. Mind you, I am not criticizing his performance, he did an excellent job. I am however criticizing the hypocrisy that professes that changing the race of non-White characters or tertiary characters is acceptable but changing White characters or major characters is some how a detriment.

And rather than acknowledge that fact, you go on to prove me right by being a hypocrite, making an argument for why it is okay for an Irishman and French woman to play characters that are traditionally Arab, but not okay for a non-White to play a character that is traditionally White. You are a hypocrite, and I am loathe to respect a hypocrite.

I think more than anything Campbell draws particularly striking bombshells so it's only fitting fans gravitate towards his MJ depiction.

I am far more concerned about characterization. It doesn't matter how capable the actress if the script and direction are wonky.
Yes, but this is a given and is a predicament rarely encountered. The whole point of the casting process is to avoid a mess like that. Now that Shailene is confirmed to be out, the race is on again to find our next MJ. Whether the fan backlash was warranted or not, I think they'll be more wary of who they cast. I have a feeling they'll be more mindful of talent who can convincingly pull off the supermodel look. Here's hoping they're successful.

Eh..If anything, I think Romita's design is the 'quintessential' look for MJ. He's the one that envisioned the look of the character and the one that so many artists have based their interpretations off of.

Campbell's freckle-faced MJ has become quite popular though.

Decent cross between 616 and Ultimate...freckled :hmm

Romita's is undoubtedly the benchmark, though it has a classical quality which I don't think many modern fans are accustomed to anymore. It's similar to how Jim Lee has become a sensation for his work on DC. It's modern and edgy, while encapsulating all that we've loved about these characters' iconographies. Campbell captures that with his MJ.

Lee and Campbell's work both scream 90's to me. I think Deodato, Stegman, and Quesada all draw a more modern MJ.

Fair enough I suppose.

Imo, Quesada's MJ is very inconsistent. I do like Deodato and Stegman's work though. Very Romita influenced. I think John Romita Jr. has done the best job of keeping his father's basic design 'modern' with the times. Especially with his work during the early-mid 2000's.

Almost forgot about Paolo Rivera! He also draws a very trendy, sexy, and modern MJ that harkens back to the original Romita design.
