thats not what i'm saying at all.
There are characters who use jokes and then there characters that ARE jokes. SG falls under the latter. I have no problem with funny characters provided there is more to them than that but with SG the entirety of how she operates within the MU and how the MU interracts with her does nothing but make it difficult for me to get into comics.

I enjoy the elaborate history of the comic book universe. I've been reading comics all my life and I enjoy the escapism.
SG makes it more difficult to enjoy. I wanna be able to get into a good story that takes place within the marvel universe, not a story that's only purpose is to be too ridiculous to get into.
If thats what you're looking for then thats fine but it seems to me that it should be seperate.

It's the same with the whole, breaking the fourth wall thing that some characters have done.
I hate that. When i'm reading a novel or watching a movie or whatever I dont want the main characters to suddenly be aware that their actions are fiction. Like how did you do that? "Well I stepped out of the panel of the comic book i'm in."

I dont need to be reminded that i'm reading a comic book. I know what i'm reading isnt real but I prefer the fiction i'm enjoying to not actively sabotage itself. SG is sabotage to the rest of the MU that I enjoy.

I'm sorry, but that just sounds like bull to me. Squirrel Girl doesn't sabotage the Marvel Universe. She's a funny character who's used in funny stories for the purpose of being funny.

^Agreed. Sometimes I think we think to much. And yeah, that can be a bad thing....sometimes. Sometimes we just gotta take the story/character/comic for face value.....fun.

Tell this to Varient.

For the record I meant that Alien Phalanx Warlock thing, not my main Man Adam.

See that might bother me if you didn't have Batwoman as your avatar. :whatever:

And Squirrel Girl? She rocks. Storm, Paste Pot Pete? I can think of way worse characters. Maggot? The third Thunderbird? White Rabbit? The Walrus? Toad? Egghead? Stingray? Ronin? Nighthawk (it doesnt matter which verison, they all suck)? Dman? Rage? Justice? God, how I hate Justice.
A horrible comeback that proves the theory, only nazis love you.

CConn: it's just...a totally horrible comeback
CConn: I can't even spring board off it to anything good
Master Bruce: Yeah. :(
Still doesn't change the fact that DC's crappiest character in years is your avatar. :o

And for the record, I like Howard the Duck. I don't see why people think I counted him as a crappy character.

Being funny doesnt contribute anything to marvel continuity except make it contradict itself more and make it more difficult to enjoy.
I hope Squirrel Girl chokes on a deseased c*** and dies screaming.
I hope worse happens to the a****** who created her.

the a****** who created her was Steve Ditko, the same guy that helped create Spider-Man

Squirrel Girl has principally been written by Dan Slott, a writer who makes it his job to fix and explain continuity, to pick up the slack left by other authors. So how do any of her appearences contradict continuity? because you think some of her victories are silly?

Don't forget that one fo the first events in the Marvel Universe was Dr. Doom sending the FF back in time... to steal Blackbeard's gold. And the Thing became a pirate.

The Marvel Universe has more than enough room, and in fact a large history of, occassional silly storytelling

To be fair, I love comics, but people need to stop being so po-faced about it and realise that it's an entertainment medium. It's not high art for god's sake. What I love about comics is they incorporate every genre into a big ol blender and create a truly FUN source of escapism. There's plenty of room for humour within comics and it's usually when people start to take them too seriously that great rafts of suckage tend to occur.

If you take books too seriously and ***** constantly about someone *gasp* injecting a little humour into their stories you're walking down the path to fanboydom. Learn to take a step back, realise that certain books are never going to be to your liking and get over it.

If it's a choice between a bit of comedy and geniune heart from slott or the whiny leftist crap that is most of mark millar's current output I know which i'd choose.

The thing you seem to be forgetting is that slott writes all kinds of different books, everything from arkham asylum through to spider-man and human torch. This kind of flexibility and range within the medium is getting rarer by the day, so personally, I support anyone who wants to try something new. Not everyone will like it, but comics will become better for it in the long run.

Plus if you're going to ***** about bad writing I think the stuff going on with say...wolverine, or spidey, or ultimate civil war are far better candidates at the moment. :cmad:

^Oh no....no one else say Howard the Duck. 'Preciate ya.

most of the characters people are raising in this thread...I get the distinct impression they haven't actually read a single book with said character in it. Most people's gut reaction to squirrel girl is that she's a lame character due to her powers etc. The reality is that any character is only as good as the person writing it.

Dan likes squirrel girl and as a result he gets some great stories out of her. The stories are what we should be judging, not the characters statistics/powers. Dazzler's powers are kind of lame but sh'es had some great storylines.

FANBOY: def- Someone who *****es on principle rather than actually taking into account context and source material.

^Hey bro, I hear ya. I have read Howard, SG and a bunch of lesser known charcters, but that does not make them bad. Charcters like Silver Surfer, etc should not even be mentioned on this thread, they are good characters, you might not like them but they are solid.

I feel characters that should be posted are the likes of Bird Boy, Beak, Artie, Siltman, etc. Characters that should not even have been made.

And yet, Beak and Stiltman have both been writen well in good stories. That's the thing, there are no bad characters, just bad writers.

well, it's kind of human nature, forming an opinion based on a passing impression, or heresay. Think about all the people who talk about how much they hate blacks/gays/jews/whatever, but have never even met one. Granted, that's an extreme example, but a valid one.

and ok, he's not your style, but would you really call him pathetic and useless?

It's funny, my mind went that route after I posted the question. It really is quite sad to have so many negative preconvieved notions.

As to the last, well seeing as I don't particularly enjoy the character and the arcs feel like a waste to me, I think it'd classify. However, I'll leave the fowl on the boderline for a valid point made on your part.

It's a rare occasion, you should feel proud, Father Time.:ninja:
