The Avengers "Whosoever holds this hammer, if he be Hemsworthy, shall possess the power of Thor" - Part 1

I'm with you. I like Thor being able to fly without the aid of Mjolnir. In fact, I always hated the idea of him throwing Mjolnir and grabbing the handle to fly. That never made sense to me. I'd rather they keep it simple and keep it that Thor has flight abilities on his own.

Exactly, I hope we get a few scenes in The Avengers where Thor flies with Mjolnir at his side like in that video I posted.

I'm okay with Thor flying with Mjolnir because it makes his flight more unique, and not so Superman-esque. But I hate the sight of him spinning Mjolnir like he's a helicopter when he floating in the sky, and what happens if he throws his hammer in mid-flight? Will Thor fall like a meteorite?

Well in Thor when he first flew into the sky during the Destroyer battle he was hovering on his own, then he started spinning Mjolnir to stabilize the tornado he created.

he definitely can fly without mjolnir...seems like marvel is tentative to show him flyin too much though....unlike IM who gets a lot of flying screentime...I would love to see an in-flight battle in the next Thor movie, similar to IM with the jets

bigThor, do the circular plates on Thor's chest plate have anything to do with this powers?

No, I believe the "heat effect" was just Asgardian technology used to reinforce the discs attachment to the armor.

Yeah I don't like that very much, but as long as Thor flies alot throughout the actual film I won't mind.

Yeah that part was quite epic indeed, unlike most Thor fans I like the idea of Thor being able to fly without the aid of Mjolnir.

There were a few scenes in A:EMH where Thor flew with both arms by his side instead of holding Mjolnir in front of him, I would love for him to do the same in the film at some point.

He does it at 5:23 in this video - http://youtu.be/bdaGUYf45t0

Thor flew even faster than the Quinjet and he deflected a blast from Kang's ship that was powerful enough to destroy all of NYC.

Agreed, I think Thor's flight works better if he doesn't need Mjolnir to do it. It seems like Thor can fly as fast/faster than the Quinjet in The Avengers as well with that scene of him catching up to it and landing immediately.

I was watching Hulk Vs. Thor last night and I noticed that in one scene Loki flew beside Thor while they were in Hel. I had never noticed that part before and I've never seen Loki flying. I've always thought Loki was more of the type to teleport but seeing him fly looked pretty cool.

That moment in EMH really showcased Thor's power and his character, sacrificing himself for the team like that. I'm sure that aspect of Thor's character will be shown, he's come a long way since the events of his movie.

BTW I found a video from '11 where Hiddleston discusses the scene in The Avengers when he first lands on Midgard. The moment is shown in the trailers but I didn't know that was his entrance.

They really did hesitate to show Thor flying in his movie. When they did, for the most part, it was a distant shot or he quickly left or entered the scene, etc.

Hopefully, we get more Thor flying in the Avengers. Seems like there's a good chance we will.

I can't imagine them giving Iron Man all of those awesome flying scenes without giving any to Thor... Okay well I can, just don't want to.

I think the difficulty with Thor v Iron Man's flight is that Thor is a natural human figure.

With Iron Man, it's easy to forgive the CG because it's a mechanical figure, so anything that looks unnaturally fluid is just chalked up to the nature of the character.

With Thor, you can easily run into the Superman Returns problem where the CGI is really glaring, and just unnaturally smooth. You get the whole "uncanny valley" problem when a human figure is fully CGI'ed into a scene.

Personally, I loved the scene where Thor shot like a bullett through the monster's head.
No obvious CG, but still showed he could fly fast and do damage...

There's really no excuse if they don't have great flying scenes for Thor...

Technology's gotten to the point where things like that are fully possible. I also don't think SR had any glaringly bad CGI in the flying scenes.

Why can't they do something like this for Thor? They've got great special effects teams working on The Avengers... so I'm expecting greatness.

I dunno, I thought SR's flight was pretty glaringly bad, especially in close-ups or outer space, it took me right outta the movie

The CGI wasn't perfect but it was nowhere near glaringly bad imo.

Another example of great flight in a movie is Chronicle. The movie had a low budget and still managed to pull off realistic looking flying scenes.

i would be happy if it was just as same or better than SR flight in the plane sequence..

i wonder how thor comes to know of loki's location and return to earth...
maybe Odin told him?...

I feel Thor doesn't get enough respect, I wouldn't be surprised if he gets his ass kicked through out most of the movie first by the Iron Man and Cap, and then the Hulk. I just have that feeling and you can't blame me for it. Marvel is pushing Iron Man and Hulk hard.

It's true, he's taken a backseat in the promotion to Iron Man and the Hulk, but you'd just have to assume they'll give every character their due. Especially the main ones like Cap, Iron Man, Hulk and Thor. They're the ones with the existing film franchises of their own. They're not going to make Thor look too weak, without showing him giving some back of his own, since they're not going to want to devalue his film franchise, which will continue on after The Avengers. I don't love the way the trailers were cut, in this case, but I think everything will work out fine in the end.

That's called selling the movie. If marketing is anything to go by than Iron Man is gonna be the leader, Hulk is gonna take out Loki's army all by himself, Hawkeye isn't gonna have any lines. I understand how you feel since I'm a Cap fan myself, but rest assured, Marvel isn't just any other studio, they respect their characters. Thor will get his time to shine come May 4th.

i think we have to w8 till new stuff is revealed or at least the tv spots to come to that conclusion...

although the third trailer that is coming out with JC is a carbon copy of the second trailer, i am hoping there is at least some thor in it, besides the stark kidding around banner scene

I agree, I think the flight scenes in SR looked pretty realistic and if Chronicle could give us cool flight scenes then a film of this magnitude should definately be able to deliver.

That's the problem though, May 4th is two months away and the wait is unbearable.

Then again, we should probably expect some character trailer/tv spots/featurettes in the coming months.

Patience is overrated. I'm a big fan of getting everything I want now, and right now. I just wish everyone would stop being so selfish and start accommodating my needs! :argh:

Yeah hopefully so, since April isn't too far away I think I'll be able to wait for that.
