Why are so many people deadset against showing the origin?

I want a new origin film to reboot thr Superman franchise, but please DC/WB DON'T base it off superman Secret Origin. That'd feel like just another Donnerverse ripoff to me.

Glad you said that because I feel like Secret Origin is just that ... a big smooch to Donner. If it weren't for the beautiful artwork I'd say it's a huge 'miss'.

Well what ever the do next go around i hope its a good story, it has what things most of us fans want, and bring some new things to the table that wont be to far off from the norm fans want to see.

An origins can easily be done pre title, in about 10 mins. Flash backs can be used through out the movie, when Clark is talking to his family, Lana or Lois.

Simple

yea i said it before myself i am down for any way to do the origins, be it in opening credits/with flash back during the film, a straight a to b plot, or another way. As long as we have a new an different origin, story, and setting to help get it away from the past takes/movies.

i'd like to see Jor-el and Lara come up with different places to send Kal-el as their racing to put him in the ship before finally agreeing on Earth. i like this idea b/c its says that their is more out there in the DC universe than just Krypton.

yea some throwaway lines like some other known DC alien worlds would be great. So it can help show that superman isnt alone in his universe.

An origin is definitely needed on several levels. First it shows that the new film is separate from the Donnerverse. Secondly if handled well it could be used to enrich the franchise, like for example a new take on General Zod and his group or Non as Jor-el’s mentor, or tying Brainiac to krypton’s destruction. Endless possibilities.

That being said I don’t want them to go with a straight origin from the movies beginning. Here me out. Both Smallville and Lois and Clark have chosen to let the audience discover Clark’s origin with him. We may come in with preconceived ideas but (for example) on the pilot of Smallville, I had every expectation of it starting out on krypton, but it didn’t. It showed us Clark’s ship on it’s way to earth in a meteor shower. I was like wow, that’s new. From the start it was clear this wasn’t Richard donner’s superman. We had glimpses of Kryptonian technology (just seeing the ship itself showed krytonian technology wasn’t based on the crystals as previously), saw the Kryptonian language, and were forced to use our own imagination to assume what krypton may have been like (right along with Clark). Unfortunately they dropped the ball around season 5 when the fortress formed and from then on the connections with the movie became more concrete, but initially it was much more engaging to discover those things with Clark.

Same with Lois and Clark, we start off with his move to metropolis. His first scene imho was about the best intro of Clark Kent ever in live action. He steps out of the cab, a bus is out of control, he rushes towards it, then booom! It stops. He walks off, then we as an audience see his hand print in front of the bus! Now that is brilliant! The show doesn’t reveal much about his origin until half-way through the season with the discovery of this orb sent along with his ship. Again, b/c they don’t spell everything out for you up front in engages you more, you become more invested in the discovery of his history, Clark’s mystery becomes your mystery as an audience. You’re not sure what will stay the same and what’s changed as far as Krypton or his origin is concerned. Personally that is much more satisfying for me. When Clark makes those discoveries and he sees krypton for the first time (hopefully through some sort of cool technology) we as an audience are seeing it with him for the first time as well. It would leave much more of an impact.

It should look very different from the Superman films. Just take a look at World of New Krypton to see how amazing in a Sci-Fi way you could make krypton look. Get some really good concept designers in there and tell them to go to work. Don’t limit their creativity by a lot of preconceive notions on crystals and ice or whatnot.

It could be amazing and really redefine for a new generation, Krypton, and superman. That’s what I feel needs to be in the new movie as far as an origin is concerned.

I think you guys put way to much stock in separating it from the donner-verse so as not to confuse people. Really, a 30+ year old movie that obviously no one cared about when Superman Returns came out. So they don't really have to go through great lengths to separate it, once they do the origin they'll be fine. I can see them avoiding the whole rocketed to earth and krypton part and possibly starting out as a kid. I really like the first issue of secret origin because it touched on all the important aspects in a clever and quick way.

is it possible to dedicate the entire first movie towards the history of krypton and its last days ending it with Kal-el's ship rocketing away from krypton? would people go for it?

I don't think so. Only the most hardcore Superman fans would want to see that.

I would love that, but not sure if general audience would.

Anyway, a movie like that cant be called Superman, obviously.

I like what the did in the MOS comic book when his origin wasnt explained straight away. I think they should reveal the basics of his origin in the first movie then have him discover certain things as the movies go along.

yea i been saying it for awhile i would def want next movie series to have clear lines of showing fans/general audiences that this is nothing like the past films and all that. Little nods/jokes to donner's movies or older superman stuff is ok to still do. But dont make it be just like it. Then as for the origin i do agree we need to have differences there too. and for the look and feel of everything too. Now as for how the origin should be done i am pretty open in trying different ways be it start on krypton, start on smallville life, or just him arriving in metropolis for the first time. Then as long as we get the origins told through the film i will be happy there.

if they don't tie brainiac to the destruction of krypton like in STAS what about Imperiex? could foreshadow what's in store for earth in a JL movie.

I agree its a big smooch to Donner, but I think they got the Smallville and younger Clark things really well (save for Superboy before Superman)

In an origin reboot they should use Secret Origins for Smallville scens and then Man of Steel/STAS and a little bit of Birthright in Metropolis

I would love that, but not sure if general audience would.

Could be a good prequel comic or DTV though.

yea i could see a prequel movie tie in comic thing. That would be a great way to promote the movie and all that.

I think it should be like Batman '89. Just give a powerful entrance with action throughout and tell his story in small parts. It should not have alot of dialogue. I'd stray away from the love story, just keep the focus on Superman and the villain he's facing.

well the whole lois and the lois/clark/superman thing is an intergal part of the characters.

True, but I should be a journey. Give them a rocky start and allow it to form through sequels. Lois is an important character, no doubt, but her story with Superman doesn't have to be a "love" story. Depending on how the story is re-written it could change the relationship into a strong friendship which would be a better choice in my opinion because it wouldn't lead to Half-breed Superbaby. The story could be changed to where Superman is destined to be with a Kryptonian woman. I'd like to see new experiences rather than the ones that we already know.

I'd just like to see it as a realistic relationship that develops over time. The love at first sight thing is overdone these days, and if you look at the old movies including SR, their is never a real basis for the "love" they have for each other. No real relationship. Supes likes lois just because and she has a crush on him because who wouldn't. It's never developed. Now Lois and Clark, with much more character development on both leads, actually showed how a real relationship might form over time, but as you said they were intially really good friends, that friendship drove the story. I'd much prefer that approach in a new film. Have the friendship develop into more as the sequels come out with lois learning the truth about clark and superman.

The main thing they need in the move is well written characters along with quality action. make it exciting and fun!

For anyone who says "all you need is more action" just take a look at Spidey 3, it had more action than all the rest, it also had an aweful love story too, and neither one helped the movie. Also Incredible Hulk, had plenty of action but i wouldn't say it was that much better than Ang Lee's hulk. The action can be great in a movie but if the rest doesn't hold up then it might still be underwhelming.

I like what Robin said in another thread about getting the tone right, embracing the scifi elements of the character and running with it. I think that's the best approach, a fun, action packed movie with well development characters who are interesting to watch that you actually care about in a scifi plot.

I think Johns nailed this part. I would love to see that first issue on screen. It has the emotional impact of him finding out he's from another planet without actually showing it from the beginning. His powers are shown in a matter of pages. I think this would be a great scene, even if you did it like begins where they cut back and forth just before he becomes superman I don't think anyone would have any complaints.

The first few issues of Birthright were fantastic. Love the scene with him wrestling a lion in africa, that would be awesome to see on screen. They did a good job of showing that he enjoys having his powers, especially in nature. Good stuff

well if they did superman cant have children with humans due to biological reasons we wouldnt have to worry about any super kids again. But yea i would totally love if they can find a good balance in drama, love, comedy, action/scifi. I do agree think next go around they should embrace the comicbookie/scifi stuff.
