Why Brian Michael Bendis sucks

I don't mind talking heads, myself. One of my favorite series at DC is now Checkmate, and before that it was Gotham Central--two series that hinge more on yapping and political intrigue than action. The difference is that Rucka writes them that way from start to finish, and it's clear that the emphasis is on the political stuff, which is actually set up to be interesting. Bendis sets up superhero action stories, then has nothing happen for most of the arc, then crams everything into the last issue. He did it in Secret War, he did it in a few USM arcs when I was reading it, he did it in the New Avengers arcs I've read, etc. As far as I've seen, his record on superhero work is just not that good. Others may disagree, but that's what my experience reading Bendis' superhero work has shown me.

I like Rucka also and you made a good point on the difference between the two.

Depends on your definition of "borefest." I agree with deemar, I haven't liked anything Bendis has written that primarily hinges on superheroes. Ultimate Spider-Man was good for a while but even that crashed and burned before long, so I dropped it.

You seriously need to start reading Ultimate Spider-Man again. SERIOUSLY!

I dont pick up any Ultimate titles so....no skin off my back.

I dropped USM shortly after that Hobgoblin arc. To tell you the truth it started to go downhill for me after Venom. It seemed I was only collecting it because I had been for so long. I swore I would never be that kind of comic fan so I just dropped it. Haven't looked back scince.

I bought the first four hardcovers then was like what the ****, this is lame and sold them all.
Did the same with my Ultimate X-Men trades (and single issues) and I'll probably will do the same with my Ultimates trades.

Sterling bit of criticism there.

Oh well different strokes for different folks.

USM (IMO) has been really good of late. Lots of action, bagleys art has picked up again and an interesting relationship triangle has developed. Its far more spidey than the current comics are.

:)

Agreed. USM has been ringing of old school Spidey for a while now. Never hurts in giving it another shot.

Yes it will.

Like Darthphere, I quit reading Ultimate comics as a whole. I needed to save money, and I figured if I could do it by cutting out the only non-canon books I read, that'd be the best idea. As it stands, I haven't really missed anything from the Ultimate universe, and there's still plenty of quality books from the 616 Marvel stuff to occupy my attention.

Money was the main reason but I also didnt like how some characters were written and how the plot never seems to progress. I dont want a pig-headed ******* Captain America, I dont want a Spider-Man who after 100 issues is still 15 years old. Its just not my style.

I looked through some Ultimate comics every now and then and found them not to my tastes, either. Same with Daredevil. People rave about how amazing Daredevil is, but it's just never appealed much to me. The only DD story I really enjoyed reading was Frank Miller's Man Without Fear mini, and that's just because DD has a really good, tragic origin. I enjoyed the Jack Murdock scenes more than the Matt Murdock ones in that, too.

Ill admit, ive heard some good things about Ultimate FF, but I rather not buy it.

I read the first 12 or so issues of Ultmate FF, it was good. The Ultimates is great. Ultimate X-Men was good for the first couple years then went downhill, not read it since issue 25 or so.

Ultimate Spidey does NOT feel like classic Spidey, WTF are you talkin' about?! It's still th' same bull****! Long drawn out arcs, Spidey actin' like a grade A rookie with no spider-sense, needin' help to beat his baddies... Th' only thing that was different about th' last arc is Spidey didn't get unmasked! That's it! It's still th' same old Bendis bull****!

Ultimate X-Men has picked up since Bru came on, finally able to enjoy it. But I love UFF and Ultimates. Those two are good reads. Spidey can kiss my ass.

I hated Ultimate X-Men. The characters were way too different from the original versions for me to enjoy them.

I'll never forget that one internal monologue where he was like "I feel like I'm going to toss my cookies. In fact, I'm going to eat some cookies, just so I can toss them." :D
USM jumped the shark for me when there was that Geldhoff guy, and all he said was like "It's vindy..."
really scraping the bottom of the barrel there, Brian. :(

I dropped it after Ultimate Gwen died, but I think my problems with it started around the Geldoff arc too.

I don't remember when I started gettin' sick of it. All I know is whatever drew it to me in th' first place was long gone.
