Will Sucker Punch bombing affect Superman?

Really though the list of mistakes is long for this movie. Nothing was really working with each other. From start to end it was a mess. The more I think about it the more I hate it. I don't even remember hating it this much after the film.

With me, I didn't hate it but I was frustrated with it. So many cool little moments that don't add up to ONE great moment.

And Jon Hamm was wasted in his role here.

well he is not dark and gritty lol

this is why i want this film to be good because so many people have that same perception of supes being boring

Seems the recent Lois Lane, JLA, and Batman reboot news created the "Sucker What?" situation WB wanted after the film's failure. Smart move, WB.

One of the reasons why they think that I believe is the fact that he's too godlike and has almost no vulnerability which for example batman and other characters have in spades, also add to that that other superheroes fight, they have physical challenges supes doesn't(in the movies that is without counting part 2). Heck even in SR he lifted an island full of kryptonite and didn't die.

plus he didn't have any villain that was a pshysical threat to him he just lifted things and saved people from falling debri and such. Thats' why its so important for this film to have superman fighting a physical threat. People are tired of superman doing the same stuff, in 1978 having a guy flying around and lifting things was great but now it doesn't work the same way.

I think some people over analyze what Sucker Punch really is...I don't think it was a flop

well it did open at number one, then all the parents took their kids to see a movie about a nerd

Flop? LOL riiiight.

It will gain a cult following, and will more than make up a lackluster box office showing by selling massive units on DVD and Blu-ray. By the way, what are the numbers on it overseas?

The box office is never the end of the financial story with any Sci-Fi/Fantasy movie (especially one anime inspired)… Just wait until Japan is back on it’s feet.
Oh they are gonna make their money off it. That you can be sure of.

I guess you don't know the meaning of a 'cult' following b/c you just stated a contradiction. 'Office Space' and 'The Big Lewboski' were flops but they now have a cult following. Blade Runner, Scott Pilgrim and Fight Club too. A movie with a cult following never made money.

Now Sucker Punch COULD have a cult following later down the road but no one can predict that. I'll give you that. But the consesnus on Sucker Punch is polarizing right now, I can't tell.

Also, again, I think people put too much thought into the international box office. The movie might regain it's budget back, but the bottom line will always be domestic. The Golden Compass bombed in the US, but made a whole lot of money overseas, and I'm sure it's made it budget back via DVD sales. But it was a flop. If not, where's the sequel.

And on a more serous note, Japan has bigger things to worry about right now.

well I know plenty of people who liked it...I mean hot ass chicks running around blowing stuff up killing people...number one in my book

That's wonderful. I'm not forcing you to dislike it either.

I kinda liked Sucker Punch but..it's missing something. I mean it's a beautiful movie; a little masterburtory but it does harken to 'Heavy Metal'. BUT it lacks tension and the story didn't progress until..the third act.. But I don't think it'll affect Superman at all.

The problem with SP was that it was just an underdeveloped story and script overall.

If Snyder and that Japanese co writer would have had someone else polish up the script, than it would have been better most likely.

Haha..okay, why did point out that his screenwriter is Japanese?

cause he think's he's turning Japanese, he think's he's turning Japanese, he really thinks so

i think he's mentioned that the co-writer is Japanese twice now. haha.

Which is why I stated "It will gain a cult following" As in the future. Is that my opinion? Yes it is but it is one rooted in some cinematic history. One can look to a slew of SciFi/Fantasy film that did not do well in the box office, were of much lower production value (some even lost money at first) that are still paying residuals. Equilibrium, Dark City… on and on.

My point was that what the average person calls a “flop” is based on a very narrow criteria. What the businessmen and women on the industry side think of as a “flop” is totally dependent on the return on investment and how strong the residual profits are.

The genre and production value of Sucker Punch all but guarantees that it will make bank accounts happy for a long time. So what some call “flop” others call a gift that keeps giving.

Still, back to the original question in the post… No… no matter what Sucker Punch does or does not do. It will not have any effect on Superman. Why? Because it is F-ing Superman.

But you 'question' my flop assessment with your "LOL" and then turn your argument about it being a 'cult following'. And most movies with cult followings are movie that have..bombed. So I think I won that argument. Just submit to me!!! KNEEL.

And your argument about flops means that every movie out there makes money somewhat somehow and everyone ends up being happy; it doesn't make sense. WB was probably wanted the movie to hit at least 30-40 million. But it didn't. Nor is the word of mouth is strong enough to possibly have legs (though we're in the midst of it). We'll see.

It's like saying 'Ultra Violent' is a cult classic when it's not. It bombed and it has no following what so ever. I should know b/c I love cult movies. If a movie doesn't resonant with a crowd, then they'll forget it. But if it does, then you'll get an Evil Dead or The Fifth Element here and there. But it does not apply to all sci-fi movies.

BUT we can agree that it doesn't affect Superman. :) :)

Because I'm a jerk, I will have the last word! :P

Tell me the truth, have you even seen the movie? I went opening night and I can tell you it is not a good film.

Quality is irrelevant, as is whether I have seen, like or not like the movie. What is relevant is the genre and how consumers of that genre spend their dollar. Look at how many bad comic book movies there are and the droves of fan boys who swear that they were great. Look at the huge debates even just here with fans offering a litany of reasons as to why these crap films are actually quality movies and/or adaptations and defend them to the end.

One only needs to tune into the SyFy Channel or take a quick headcount of the fans of Smallville to realize how low most people’s standards are within this sphere of entertainment when it comes to spending their dollars. Those horrible SyFy projects get green lit for a reason, and it ain’t to LOSE money.

If you just sit back and gauge things like this purely based on your personal taste and assign it to the rest of the world. You are going to miss the mark more times than not.

My point is and always has been, just to take a somewhat eoteric look at the term Flop and how silly it sometimes is considering the type of money that is being made on films like this. It was not really to debate anybody. It only took on a debate tone when individuals who maybe think a lil too highly of themselves, looked to personalize un-aimed comments and somehow make it about them.
