Will Sucker Punch bombing affect Superman?

So it's a friend's kid that he's driving to soccer practice. :D

Thinking about it, Sucker Punch will probably have no affect on Superman. You got to remember, Sucker Punch was Snyder's baby. His script, his work. Superman is being written by Nolan and Goyer.

But he still needs to tell that story. The story being the brainchild of Nolan and Goyer could be a best thing ever, but if he's unable to translate that into a well crafted film it's a waste.

It might or it might not affect it. To me it's still a mistery why did they go with Snyder for this project. It might be because Snyder won't do his own thing and he's always been more into executing someone else's ideas.

Most of Sucker Punch's criticism just supports my take on Snyder: great visuals and little else. It seems after a few movies, it's becoming clearer and clearer that he needs more than good visuals or a talent to duplicate things.

Thats funny how things go. I thought 300 and Watchmen to be MUCH BETTER movies than Inception but that's just me.

Absolutely.

Whereas 300 and Watchmen were beautiful visual fests, Inception was something else entirely. Or any Nolan movie for that matter.

Now because of Dark Knight, he is the ****ing man. Really, the success of Dark Knight, imo, has little to do with Nolan but with the amazing qualities of characters like Batman and the Joker.

So any movie with Joker and Batman will translate into a great movie automatically? No further talent is required?

He just transposed them into the screen mantaining the spirit from the comics, finally.

Which is thanks no nothing else but Nolan's talent. But Nolan didn't just maintain the spirit but re-interpreted it sucessfully since many things in TDK are significantly different fropm the comics. And that is much more than duplicate it.

If Snyder does the same, he will be hailed as God too.

If any director does the same they'll be praised. And deservedly so. Thing is, it is quite hard to find one who does so.

If Snyder does the same as Nolan that means he's a better director than he is now.

But he still needs to tell that story. The story being the brainchild of Nolan and Goyer could be a best thing ever, but if he's unable to translate that into a well crafted film it's a waste.

I don't think Snyder will have the problem. I mean, he translated 300 and Watchmen pretty well, in my opinion. Plus, I think Nolan or someone within his camp will be on set with Snyder. WB will be watching Superman really closely.

I'm not sure studio execs micromanaging production is what we want.

Studio execs are not artists. They're business majors.

I think if anything Snyder will try to redeem himself with Superman.

He knows if Superman bombs it will be the end of his career.

Snyder being a comics fan, I think he realizes the last thing you wanna do is piss off superman fans.

Well, he probably knows any underperforming movie is bad.

The last thing any director wants is to make a bad movie. That has never stopped bad movies from being made.

One thing I've never understood is why comics fans think that being a comic fan gives you special skills to direct.

I didn't say that lol

he'll just have a bunch of rabid people after him

I think when there's some genuine heartfelt appreciation for the material, it does translate...and it fuels a sense of honesty in the storytelling. But it can also work against things as well, because as they say...'love is blind'. ;) There's a constant balance between subjectivity and objectivity. I think if you can invite audiences to feel what you do on their own accord, without telling or forcing them to...it's a good start, and that comes down to the actual skill of the filmmaker.

Sucker Puch bombing will not affect SUperman .

Look at Michael Bay.
He had quite alot of succesful movies , then made the island which bombed horrifically and then was given The Tf franchise. We have giant robots beating the crap out of each other , robots peeing on John Turturro , John Turturro in underwear , negrobots and 2 movies which have made 300 and 400 plus million at the doemstic Boxoffice.

I think the only affect Sucker Punch will have it that is won't get listed in ads as part of "From the studio/directors/producers that brought you BB, TDK, Inception, 300, etc... some taglines... whatever they title this Superman film."

It will absolutely have an affect. Sucker Punch really proves that Snyder can't make a fun movie. I went with 2 other people and we were disappointed. I think they should of given Superman to Michael Bay cause right now I have no idea what to expect from Snyder.

I don't think it will have an effect but I dont think its gonna bomb anyway

Well, love for the material and fanatism are two different things. What you're saying is that fanatism/love for comics and filmmaking skills are independent from each other. My point, so I agree.

As you say, in the end talent is what makes the true difference.

Well, I can't comment on Sucker Punch, but I thought 300 was fun and Watchmen was a decent movie, but to each their own.

I wanted so hard to like Sucker Punch. I went opening night and it was almost a full theater. I thought the beginning was fine. But by the end of the movie, the whole thing just felt poorly done. You need to go out and see this mess.

I really don't. While I don't think it's fair to call it a bomb if it's not #1 by the end of the first day, I also think that it looked like a considerable flash over substance jumbled together mess under the facade of a modern "girl power" movie, which annoys me because they're always starring these soft-looking little girls who by all rights should be killed in the first few minutes. But SuperFerret, all that danger is in the main character's imagination! Oh, I know, and it reinforces the idea that this girl should really be in an asylum, no matter how unfair her incarceration was.

Nobody is calling Sucker Punch a bomb because it will not be #1 by the end of the first day or weekend; it could end up being #1 for the weekend but it will still be a bomb! What place it ends up in is irrelevant to this thread!
The fact is that it is making 22 million on it's first weekend; it's a bomb. There is no way to refute that fact!
The Owl movie was also a bomb (80 million to make, yet it pulled in 55 million domestically.)
and Watchmen (which I personally love!) also underperformed.

So in the eyes of "the world", not the fanboys like you and me who love Superman, Zack Snyder has not one but three under performing movies under his belt, which were all released one after the other, and that will add some negative buzz to Superman regardless.

I'm sure WB is having a conversation right now.

It's all about $$$$

They can't afford to have Superman not do spectacularly (which it seems that for WB, that means Spider-man numbers.)

I would not be surprised if an announcement is made that Nolan will have a greater hand in the production, or Snyder's involvement is somehow altered.

Again, I'm sure the execs at WB are watching what is happening with Sucker Punch very, very, closely and will not just sit back, fold their arms, and just "hope for the best."

Going for an over stylized look is not really the problem as long as the direction is good. Either with girls fighting larger opponents ie. Kick Ass. The problem in my eyes and one that Snyder has yet to rectify is that he forgets that a film like this should be a fun entertaining experience.

My only concern would be, if there's an argument between snyder and WB over an aspect of the film, I wouldn't want them to throw sucker punch in his face as an excuse to do whatever they please.

EXCLAMATION POINTS! It must be true!

Also, the eyes of "the world" will either not remember or not relate Superman to this, Watchmen or the owls if they're not reminded. You have more to worry about with it being related to Superman Returns and Smallville.

I'm just commenting on what I think about what I've seen. (Also, in case we interact again, bringing Kick Ass in as an example in your defense doesn't work on someone who feels that it exemplifies everything wrong with modern superheroes.)

Sucker Punch will have no effect on Superman whatsoever.

You'll see a TV Spot or two with some of the following.

From the people that brought you:

Batman Begins
300
Watchmen
Dark Knight
&
Inception

Superman: Man of Steel

"From Executive Producer Christopher Nolan..."

This is more likely the route they'll take with marketing the movie.

Frankly, that's all it needs.
