Being socially confrontational, and depressing didn't stop the Batman movies from making billions.
It's funny because the X-Men Franchise still feels like the underdog even though Apocalypse will probably make it the 6th higest grossing franchise WW.
That didn't stop Batman Begins from almost not being profitable.True, but Batman has way more legacy and is more of an icon.
I think the Internet gives it the illusion of the franchise being an underdog because Internet because the Internet has given comic book fans a pretty loud voice to be heard, and well the X-Men films' adherence to source material has always been overwhelmingly criticized by such fans. And if one's social circle on the Internet when talking about the X-Men films are purely comic book fans (which is often the case), that illusion is a reality.
It's not light enough nor funny enough nor have the novelty of a shared universe like the MCU for it to be this huge thing for general audiences as well, and its legacy pales in comparison to Batman and Superman.
That said, that doesn't mean it has never been popular among general audiences, as evidenced by the recent box office numbers. A good movie is still a good movie and people will still show up to see it regardless. It's just that these same general audience members won't show up on the Internet to make a big fuss over how popular or not the franchise is.
Ask any casual moviegoer their opinions about whether the X-Men franchise is the best or the worst of all the comic book franchises though, they probably won't even know the difference nor care.
Actually, most of my friends (and my parents, brother and sister as well) are not particularly into comicbook movies, but do like the X-movies while not really caring for The Dark Knight or the Avengers.
When I ask them why X-Men and not Superman, Spider-Man or Iron Man, they say the X-Men are more relatable and they like the X-actors and -actresses better.

I still think this not being rated R will hurt its box office.
I think he was being sarcastic. What? That makes no sense a movie dosent have to be rated r to sell.

All of those are fair points I suppose. I'm glad to see the franchise has been doing well and has been getting more recognition over the past few years. Hope that Apocalypse can live up to hype as well.I don't think the X-Men franchise is the underdog at all anymore. FC & TW were successfully & DOFP and Deadpool are straight up blockbusters. XMA may even do $1 billion.....it's tracking strong on all social sites & the main trailer almost has 50 million views.
