Dark Phoenix X-Men: Dark Phoenix News and Speculation Thread - - - - - - Part 15

30 is early 30s the earliest.
Storm was not 30 when she met Jean in 1975.

Storm was at the youngest 29 to 30 in 1980 WHEN JEAN DIED. But you clearly said:
Storm was more like early 30s and Jean was fresh out of her teens going into her mid 20s like 23ish. when they first met so no.

Are you going to tell us you didn’t say that?
You're splitting hairs. You were just wrong. You clearly said she's three years older than Jean. That is incorrect. Nuff said.
I quoted ages of the actresses suggesting they were 3 years apart, but I never said the characters are exactly 3 years apart in the comics. I said they are "around the same age in the comics." "Around" is not "exactly."
My only mistake was saying that Sophie is 24. Sophie is 23 today. Alex is 27 turning 28 in a few months. The actresses are 5 years apart. They're around 5 years apart in the comics. Perfect for Sophie and Alex to have a sisterly bond. She can be maternal too if Kinberg so chooses. Maternal doesn't mean matronly.

Last time I checked you were for Storm and Jean to have a sisterly bond. Why are you fighting this?
That your point was reductionist, reducing a complex character arc to "But...but she changes teams!" You can make anything sound lame when you mock it and reduce it.
You call "reducing a complex character arc" I call "pointing out a character that has overstayed her welcome, swaying to the whims of the screen writer and the plot because they don't know what to do with her." You call "trajectory" I call "flip flopping."

Right. And you calling it that is, as I said, reductionist.

Kinberg
kills Mystique in the first act of his movie
and he also shows it in the trailer and confirms it to a magazine. If I'm a reductionist, what do you call Kinberg?

Are we talking about ages in comics?

Because X-editorial has made it clear that none of the X-men are over 30.

Including Beast who celebrated his 30th bday in the 90s lol.

Even beyond DOFP, Mystique had purpose on "Apocalypse" and she has an even greater purpose on "Dark Phoenix":

1- She is
Kurt's mother
2- She is Xavier's "sister"
3- She is a public mutant hero (since DOFP)
4- She is the co-founder of the "new" X-Men and an X-Man herself
5- She
will sacrifice herself

So no. You're wrong.

She is
(1) Not Kurt's mother in these movies. No need to spoiler tag that.
(2) See my comment about swaying to the whims of the writer. Mystique being Xavier's "sister" is exactly that. She was never Xavier's "sister" in the original trilogy. The writers/Singer changed that for these prequel films.
(3) Sure. But she wasn't necessarily a "public" mutant hero. She disguised herself as white girl "Raven" so she wouldn't be ID'd. Heck she's still doing that in the mansion in Dark Phoenix.
(4) See (2). You can shout to the high heavens all you want but FC was never meant to be a reboot. The timeline change only happened after future Logan came back to 1973. If it was so easy to say "oh FC is a reboot, so they can make these changes," then there would've never been any need for Logan to time travel. Patrick Stewart said: "Cyclops, Storm and Jean were some of my first students." Yet they were nowhere to be found when Xavier first formed the team. So Mystique being a co-founder of the X-men in FC is also See (2) swaying to the whims of the writer.
(5) Good riddance.

.

The First Class continuity is a new continuity, not the original trilogy continuity. Even if you don't embrace my theory about Shaw as a time traveller altering the past in the early 1900s, you can even consider the First Class continuity as a parallel universe.

Said that, Mystique on DOFP was an iconic figure and had one of the best character-arcs ever committed on a superhero franchise. Her role as "mutant saviour" and co-founder of the "New" X-Men in "Apocalypse" is the natural progression for her and just brilliant from start to finish.

If you can't see that, well, it's your problem.

If The First Class continuity is a new continuity, why would they have to fix the old continuity in DOFP. Why would Singer, in interviews, talk about correcting X3 and Kinberg smugly saying "You're welcome."

Can't you see how ridiculous that sounds?

so we are now inventing theories to explain the mess of the movies? what the.... :funny:
this is getting crazier and crazier lol

well, my theory is that Raven from FC is actually Thanos third daugther, and the closest to Nebula, so she was mad at a very young age too, so she decided to time travel to the x-men world in the 60s, she met Charles Xavier and that changed her forever, becoming a good girl in the process. She went back to Guardians world, but since her sisters didnt accept her, she decided to go back to the x-men timeline, in the 80s and decided to go back to the mansion and become a x-woman.
this is clever storytelling, and first of a kind. Props to Fox. and sad general audience cant understand all this complex and rich storytelling

I was looking at a Collider interview with Kinberg. Out of all the questions asked he refused to answer 2 of them. One of which was will we see Jean in her Jim Lee suit. It doesn't confirm anything, but I find it interesting that he passed because he could've easily said no.

What would Kinberg saying no accomplish? Him not answering the question would open up a few audience members to thinking maybe I'll check it out because maybe I'll see the Jim Lee costume.

It's like Chastain and Kinberg saying
she *might* kill some other X-men. If she had shown the trailer with JLaw's death and then said "oh btw that's all the deaths in the movie" what would that accomplish for the promotion?
People's inherent curiosity will get them to check it out for who else it could be.

I suspect it was because he didn't even know what the Jim Lee suit was...

For someone who doesn't even know how to pronounce Genosha, it's not beyond the realm of possibility that Kinberg wouldn't know who Jim Lee is either.

Since the question was "Any chance we see Jean in her Jim Lee 90’s costume?" i imagine either way it is kinda easy to guess which costume that was.

But i also think its kinda obviously it won't be in the movie.

She does not sacrifice herself though, she doesn't know she will die when approaching Jean..

Please do. It's one of my favorite quirks of the X-Men mythos.

I think even Danger has gone bad a few times. Sauron has gone good, Sabertooth and Juggernaut have joined the X-Men.

What's going on with Mystique is basically a microcosm of the conflicted mutants' experience.

Which will make it all the more poignant when
she turns out to be evil in the credits

What does this mean?

Any thoughts as to who the Mutant Containment Unit is aligned with?

It'd feel a little tired if they brought Stryker back again, but it could be him.

Let me know when we are finished talking about how mystique role in the movies. Differ from the comics snorrre! I thought we was done harping on this back in the apocalypse board lol

what would everyone like to see in the next trailer or some TV spots? I'd like to get some type of look at the aliens and maybe a bit more on what Chastain's character wants. I guess Selene and Red Lotus in action as well.

I'd also like to see/hear some dialogue from Jean as Dark Phoenix. I wonder if they'll do anything with her voice, similar to what they did with OG Mystique's voice. I think it'll be cool if there was some kind of distortion to differentiate between Dark Phoenix and Jean.

Hopefully the distortion in her voice, if any, is done in post. The last thing I want to hear is Sophie trying to pull a Christian Bale. Even Bale, an Oscar-winning actor couldn't do it without it coming off funny most of the time . I have even less faith in Turner.

To be honest I don't want to see any new footage. But for the sake of this question I'll say showcasing the relationship between Cyclops and Jean a bit more.

Some more footage of Genosha.

Right now my big questions are:
1. Who's Jessica Chastain?
2. How do the flashbacks to Jean's childhood play into the story?
3. What are Magneto's motivations for wanting to kill Jean. Is it purely because of what Jean does to Mystique, or does it have to do with something else? How does he go from accepting her on Genosha to wanting to kill her later on?
4. Who are the Mutant Containment Unit, and who do they answer to? So far we've seen them on the train, and I think they're on the helicopter that Jean takes down.
