Dark Phoenix X-Men: Dark Phoenix News and Speculation Thread - - - - - - Part 15

Hmm... are you saying:

It was only in one scene both times?

DING DING DING

Now everyone chill out on the expectations on seeing it. The leaked Russian trailer would have spoiled the one and only scene in the old ending anyway.

I just get the sense they are trying to sell the emotional drama of the story in a similar way they did Logan and even DOFP. they do seem to have a focus for the emotional core of the movie in the trailer and its on jean herself and they wanna make that as clear as possible.

I've long checked out of this franchise once Disney finalized the purchase no need to see the xmen get butchered and still make $$ just cause they are the x-men

and once again so she gets the phoenix force in space so what was that in XOA?

and GFY to whoever decided were let the kids name her Phoenix

Maybe no one will agree with me on this but hear me out...

Maybe Fox should've made the Phoenix Saga instead of the Dark Phoenix Saga?

Have Jean get the Phoenix Force. But instead of immediately turning her evil have the X-Men get put in the middle of a galactic civil war with the Shi'ar Empire. Take them into space for the whole movie. Have Xavier fall in love with Lilandra. Put the Starjammers in there and make Corsair Cylcop's and Havoc's real dad. Have Jean use the Phoenix Force to save all of reality and repair the M'Kraan Crystal.

I honestly think that would've been a cooler movie than what we are going to get.

It's what I thought they'd do after Apocalypse. Crazy galactic civil war with Jean having the Phoenix force. Save her going "dark" for the sequel. Well, now as it turns out we'd have never gotten that movie, but I'm not sure Kinberg ever knew how to even attempt Phoenix.

Yeah, Kinberg very much wanted this to be similar to Logan. The thing is Logan looked wildly different from every other superhero movie, including the X-Men films, and had a raw dramatic quality. There is a hint of that in these trailers, which if you want to be an optimist hope is more pronounced in the final film. But it is still just a hint, otherwise it looks like a less expensive regular X-Men film with a very familiar plot.

I think if Kinberg wanted this to be what he describes, he should've gotten someone else to write and direct it with the pitch that it'd be a

This complaint about kids naming her bothers me less. Did anyone mind a wrestling announcer named Spider-Man in his first movie? That Iron Man was dubbed as such by the press in his first movie? It is just odder when characters start calling themselves over-the-top names. I seem to recall everyone complaining about it when X-Men: First Class had a scene of them naming each other as a lark between teenagers.

Thats a big sudden jump to take with no hints of alien outer space features in previous Xmen movies.

Yeah it would be a huge leap. something that sounds cooler than the structure would allow.

Its like looking up at someone on a building and saying hey do you know what would be cool? jump off and do a superhero landing!. now they could jump off and end up breaking both legs, infact thats probably the likely case scenario. but the person watching is just thinking about how cool it would be to do it rather than the result of the guy actually hitting on the ground, purely because it was expected he could make that leap with no issue ;p

Well really if someone else wrote and directed this movie it could have turned out exactly the same way. lets say Mangold had made this movie and it is what we are seeing in the trailers right now, which could have been possible as you can't really over play how a director would translate a material. but if it was say Mangold, people would probably interpret the footage in abit of a different, perhaps slightly unfair way, but i dunno whether it would have made much difference really.

In terms of whether Kinberg did a bad job with this movie. well thats yet to be seen. its clear he wanted to ground the movie with more practical effects, add some grit and edge to kinda feel like what they were doing with Logan and even to a certain extent DOFP.

Completely different characters.. Logan was special because we got this angry longer type that had to take care of his aging/ ill surrogate father and also becoming a father himself, showing a vulnerability we've never seen. Wolverine has always been a gritty, dirty character and it worked for the movie because it required no cosmic, sci-fi elements. Dark Phoenix on the other hand needed to be an out of this world, sci-fi movie because Phoenix is a cosmic force. Kinberg can't just say "oh we'll make DP down to earth and toned down because Logan was a success." It just doesn't work like that. How no one took a step back and told him this also annoys me.

Well DOFP wasn't this huge sci-fi spectacle adaptation either really. yeah it had robots murdering mutants in a dark future setting which was more or less the driving force then the thing that was happening throughout, and also included a certain type of time travel. but the core of that story was about is the drama of the situation. and its one of the highest rated X-Men movies to date next to logan.

If you was gonna take a stance of what worked for the X-Men movies it would be following those 2 movies as a high standard.

the battle of new york was very well received, why not show some of that in the final trailer?
the film has aliens for the first time in the franchise, why not give a slight taste of their actual form in the trailer?
the character of jessica fights against all xmen, why not quickly show her fighting some xmen in the trailer?

is a movie that has / had a whole possibility to create hype the little more the team chooses not to do this, I think this is so stupid, they prefer to show great things in events with restricted audience than to show this to the general public, sad to see this franchise walking towards its end creating new mistakes and contributing to a failure.
The tail end of that fight is in the trailer.

This just feels like X3. Same face veins, same lack of a fire bird. Same concept of her being manipulated, just instead of Magneto (a character we knew and followed for 2 previous films) it’s a random alien we know nothing about, who doesn’t have a name, or any clear motivation. . .

I was really hoping this trailer would be mind-blowing and end all that negative chatter about the many negative rumors surrounding the film but geesh!! It was the same if not worse then the 2nd international trailer..hopefully Disney re-cuts a new trailer or just adds some money shots to this one for the Avengers ENDGame premiere

I loved the second international trailer by the way
At this point who cares? If people really have in mind that this series is terrible and was never good in the first place then there's really no point in trying to change their mind on the subject. No trailer, or clip is going to change that mindset. Everybody needs a hobby so I'm glad the Dark Phoenix haters have discovered their calling in life.

I'm trying to give the movie the benefit of the doubt, and agree that a lot of the negativity (especially in the fandom community) stems from Kinberg being attached. But what he is going for is only somewhat visible in the trailer. A better director, and Mangold is obviously a MUCH better director (though he'd never helm an X-Men movie), would have known how to visibly articulate this is unlike anything you've seen before with an emphasis on drama.

Kinberg is still the guy who's written three of the last four X-Men movies, and while one of those was great (DOFP), the other two... and it still looks to be relying visually and narratively on the same familiar beats. It doesn't really look like a gritty drama but like a well photographed but relatively less expensive superhero movie that is going through the motions in terms of action and spectacle.

I still hope the final film surprises us all, but I think the concept of how he imagined Dark Phoenix is going to be quite a bit away from how the movie turned out.

Id say negative chatter from certain people on here was never gonna stop because i never got the sense certain people wanted to like this movie even a little bit.

In general outside of this forum, i am seeing far more positivity from the footage released then for X-Men: apocalypse at least.

Is that why it’s tracking so poorly?

Im trying to figure out if Jean always had the Phoenix (as shown in Apocalypse) or is this movie retconning it so that she gets it from the space incident? Or does he incident help release the phoenix?

Speaking from my own perspective, I didn't like Apocalypse, so, I am treating Dark Phoenix as the start of The Phoenix saga.

Unfortunately you are right
many people have already decided that this movie is bad since last year and this franchise has become the worst thing that ever existed, does not really have wonderful trailer or anything else that changes the thinking of these people, any good comment is a lie, any good image is below expected and could be better, good effects are always bad, EVERYTHING is bad, awful, ugly and bad because the MCU will touch them in the future.

So much denial on this board.. just admit kinberg doesn't follow his own movies and can't even connect them. Stop allowing and accepting crap writing. Stop making excuses for bad filmmakers. This series is coming up 19 years and just let that sink in. He cannot even get it right after being involved with what? 4 X films? Don't believe for a second he contributed anything to DoFP just an in name only credit. Invested 19 years and I am pissed.

He probably invested more then Singer did. but then if we wanted to be picky maybe we should just say Mathew Vaughn should get full credit because of it technically was his story and most of his own vision.
