Dark Phoenix X-Men: Dark Phoenix News and Speculation Thread - - - - - - Part 15

I'm pretty upset about the release date getting pushed back as well. I mean how do you put an outdated release date in a trailer released two days ago?

I will say this though putting it in the middle of a busy Summer shows some confidence I think. They could've easily dropped it in January, or September like The Predator.

I still have hope that it'll be good. Everything that's been OFFICIALLY released has piqued my interest. I just want to see this film already. We've already got a year's worth of speculation. Just release the damn thing.

This second delay is perfectly stupid from Fox. I was just coming round to the film after the trailer, and now I'm annoyed again.

Honestly I didn't see anything in the trailer suggesting that Scott has a major role. The leaked spoilers does say that he has a lot of screentime, but there's almost no information about his actual role in it, which raises the question if he has any actual importance in the plot.

Just the trailer footage so far is substantially more scenes for Scott than the last Phoenix story. There's no way he'll be randomly killed in the first act this time, so there's that. The trailer hinted at some pretty interesting rifts between characters, with Scott being in the pro-Jean camp (of course). Ultimately I don't think he'll have a role much bigger than Apocalypse, but that's pretty good going I suppose.

Yeah, that is super frustrating. But for me, any story elements that involve Raven should be dropped and discarded and burned with fire. If only she wasn't included in First Class, the franchise would be in so much better shape!
Can someone please explain to me what the problem is with her character? Not Jennifer Lawrence's performance, but the actual character. From my pov Mystique is one of the few female characters in recent comic book films that actually has an arc/journey. I feel like I actually know that character, and can understand/sympathize with her struggles. The only current superhero female character that comes close to having this much development is maybe Wonder Woman.

Mystique isn't supposed to be some hero especially when they haven't even utilized Storm, Rogue, Psylocke, Emma, Polaris, Dazzler, Jean, Kitty and Jubilee that much in the movies. Thats like shoving Tigra in every Avengers film and barely use the more essential members of the team from the comics. Though i shouldn't be surprised since Singer and company aren't big X-Men readers.

It's an issue that the other female characters who should be prioritized are not getting arcs and they don't have any more time. X gals own the comics. In the films they barely talk. Characters like Storm, Emma, Kitty, Betsy etc barely have dialogue while others like Rogue don't even fight with the team. Meanwhile a character who is not even a lead X-Men gets priority over them.

Jean and Storm should have already had as much time as Wonder Woman. They should have at least 3 times as much. This series has been around for 2 decades.

Then I would say the blame falls squarely on First Class. It established Mystique as a main player, and I would've found it odd if the subsequent films made her a background character. I mean it's a different take on the character, but it's handled well imo so I don't take issue with it.

Oh it's totally on the filmmakers. The X gals never got their spotlight and neither did the male X-Men characters like Cyc because of the Wolverine/Prof X/Mag focus. They never even got close the the potential of here outside of Logan and Deadpool. I liked First Class but even there they messed up on Emma and killed other characters I liked.

A ton of X-men fans never wanted Mystique as female lead cause she's not the Wonder Woman or even Wasp/Ms Marvel/Black Widow of the X-Men world. That would be Jean, Storm and Rogue. That said, my cousins who are not X-Men fans love her and I know having her there is a big part of the draw for them.

The Mystique character is like Superman in Batman v Superman.

This is simply not Mystique from the comics. Mystique is a perennial villain of the X-Men who is self-serving. You can absolutely develop her while still staying true to the source. In the books she had complicated relationships with Rogue, Nightcrawler, her most important relationship being her romance with Destiny.

Simon Kinberg and Bryan Singer care zippy about exploring that. I bet
she'll go to her grave without her motherhood being acknowledged at all.

Frankeh agreed, they have clearly given a lot of weight to Raven/mystique for good or bad. The one difference though is that there are clear moments where Superman was truly Superman in MOS and in JL and those rare moments were great. I have never enjoyed watching JLaw’s take as Mystique and felt Rebecca Romeijn was much better in the role. It’s been a chore watching Jlaw as Mystique and she will get some level of epic heroic closure which is quite different from the comics and really odd to watch. I know quite a few who are big fans of this anti-hero version of Mystique.

But isn't the whole point of DOFP making sure that she in fact doesn't become the Rebecca Romijn/ comic version of the character. Her being a different person is tied to the story of these films. For me it isn't a change that came out of left field unlike Superman in BvS.

You raise a good point carpenter. She definitely at least has a logically constructed arc (unlike Superman’s mixed strong confidence moments in MOS and in JL to being a cold Un-superman like God character in BVS). I think I would enjoy her arc more if there was a different actress maybe? Something about JLaw’s performance with the exception of First Class just seems so trite and boring. It feels like her performance drags her arc down and keeps it plodding along and it’s no fun to watch.

I am really looking forward to this film as a final chapter to this huge universe on the X-men (most of which I have enjoyed) but I do look more forward to seeing other X-women getting their due to really shine on screen. Maybe that will happen with Storm’s character in this film. I am trying my best to stay away from the plot details

I look forward to that as well. I'm also steering clear of spoilers. It'll be difficult to keep that up until June.

I think Lawrence's best performance of the character was in DOFP, but I also liked her in First Class.

I don't know if this was already discussed..but since dark Phoenix was pushed back, where does that leave Sophie NYCC appearance?

The only positive thing is maybe Fox is confident that Dark Phoenix is good enough to have a summer release.

idk, i was kind of struggling to stay excited and these news ruined even that.
by summer next year, disney-fox deal will be finalized and disney play could be launched. and if kevin feige really has x-men in his sandbox by then, i think he will insist this gets dumped to streaming. short term loss, long term gain and all that :/

Lol I've already mentioned weeks ago, that if dp was delayed again I'll be streaming it and won't be getting my money. Kinberrrrrg!

Yeah, since the deal will be sealed and delivered before June, won't Disney get a final say in determining whether DP will be coming out in the theatres? I think Fox probably delay the release date so they can let Disney make the final decision.

This is one of the reasons why I'm very excited about the MCU X-Men, and I felt that Feige (being a comics fan) will know how to properly treat the X-Men and even let the women have their dialogues and development. Maybe this is why Feige declared that they will have more focus on female superheroes in Phase 4, knowing that X-Men will arrive to the MCU by then.

Not only this problem of most of them not even talking. Even Raven, who has a lead status, is constanty portrayed as an object of dispute between the three male characters. This franchise has a very serious problem with female characters. Always had.

Apparently there may be legal things that could stop Disney putting on streaming due to them not being the ones that greenlit or funded the project.

Most people are assuming Fiege will want to stuff at full force the X-Men into the MCU as quick as possible and im gonna throw it out there and say either way he may decide to wait YEARS before doing anything with X-Men. why is that? because he certainly can afford too. the idea that he has itchy feet to get the X-Men into the MCU may be more a fan driven theory then the actual reality of it.

Personally i don't think it matters whether Dark Phoenix is released June, August or October. i don't think it will make MCU X-Men happen any quicker.

I would imagine that it would have to be released in cinemas for the backend deals that a lot of actors get.

Personally i think the Disney deal has created too many theories and assumptions and 80% of them will probably end up wrong. mostly because there are alot of assumptions with very little to nothing to back them up.
