When you look at where the franchise is currently a hard reboot would make sense.

Jackman is done
Singer is done
Most of the OG cast were done after DOFP
They struggled to get the first class cast to even renew for another contract especially Jlaw.
The way kinberg keeps describing Dark Phoenix as a finale/culmination of the XCU.
And the fact we know DP was at one point billed as a 2 parter.

Kinberg is probably saying it now because he knows this is the last movie

You're thinking of the Phoenix green costume. The Dark Phoenix red costume, AFAIR, doesn't have the black triangle.

But perhaps that was the intent with it on the collar.

You're correct. I watched the animated short of the Dark P saga on the Marvel YouTube recently, and they kept the black on the red suit aswell.

Well, even if they didn't initially approach it like a "conclusion" of sorts, I think it's obvious that Kinberg knows this is the last film. So they want it to have a sense of finality for the franchise.

I mean, save for Kitty and Xavier (and Rogue), they all died in Days of Future Past. Three "X-men movie members" died in X3, not even counting Psylocke, Kid Omega, Arclight, Dr Rao and presumably Callisto.

A reboot was/is what I would have wanted regardless of if the deal happened or not. I was hoping wayy back in 2016 that they would reboot after Logan. The movies need fresh blood and the black hole of fresh creative talent is just showing at this point

Were all expecting some major character deaths in DP. Mystique and Magneto just being a couple. By the end of this film which characters will be left? I doubt enough to carry the first class franchise forward. A hard reboot is really the only logical direction even without the merger.

Telegraphing Mystique's demise in the trailer is such a transparent act of desperation on the studio's part. No amount of producer-speak from Kinberg could convince me otherwise.
