Dark Phoenix X-Men: Dark Phoenix News and Speculation Thread - - - - - - Part 15

At the beginning of the year I was only going to see Dark Phoenix, and Endgame. But then the trailer for Joker looked really interesting, and the word of mouth for Shazam was really good.

I very think that for the most part fox's X-Men catch the Claremont's spirit.
Yes, Singer&co choose to focus on Charles and Magneto, and they put in a corner some of the most important players. That's was a mistake for us fan, but not an actually mistake, cause it was an author's choice.
What Singer&co gave us was human characters with personal doubts and mistake to live with (Debating of charles and Magneto on the Planet in DoFP)
That is pure Claremont.
While in Mcu we have monolityc characters that were charaterized only by their current action (Peter in the movie has not his unique guilty conscience)

Said that i think that we all would have both good adaptation and good movie.
But if i have to choose, i always choose the latter.

If it was for 1 or 2 films that's ok. But the X-Men filmmakers thorough their 20 year film run have not fixed their mistakes or switched the focus. Many characters never reached their potential and with that neither did the franchise. That was just one of their mistakes and one they never really fixed.

It's not just Singer and Kinberg but who was in control of the studio. These guys thought it was ok to kill off Cyclops, give Deadpool laser eyes etc. There are some horrible mistakes here and it's because they don't know why many of these characters work as well as they don't really care. Fox's job was to never know comic characters such as Elektra, F4 or X-Men. To quote Rothman "**** the fans, we have their money". That was the attitude.

IMO, they've never really fixed those mistakes because in their mind those aren't really mistakes. It's purely their vision. They invest in the characters they enjoy and trust.

And it's a waste to give them that world of characters when they trust only 3 or 5 of them.

Pretty much.

When put up against the other comic book films coming out this year where does Dark Phoenix fall in terms of anticipation? For me it's
1. Joker
2. Dark Phoenix
3. Avengers
I recently put Joker on top due to the trailer.

1. Endgame
2. Far From Home (Mostly just for Gyllenhaal's Mysterio)
3. Dark Phoenix
4. Joker
5. Hellboy

Already saw Shazam, but it would have (was?) #2

So tell me, how many oscars have won Avengers' actors?

It was just okay but like Captain Marvel, plot is filled with so many superhero cliches and tropes that you see in other movies it becomes meh after seeing it again and again
Which is why it's odd to me that it was received so well. When I was growing up a superhero film getting wide critical acclaim was reserved for movies like X2, Spider-Man 2, and The Dark Knight. Superhero films that transcended the confines of the genre. Nowadays a lot of these films get praised for playing into those confines, or tropes.

Both Captain Marvel and Shazam! are pretty average, your by the numbers superhero film.

However, I don't think they were disastrous/hideous which I think Dark Phoenix/The New Mutants would be.

Cinema industry had changed since 2000s. Comic films now are effectively keeping cinema going experience alive because its the only genre thats consistently generating good to great box receipts - and effectively keeping critics and bloggers in jobs. This may have caused some unconscious bias thats resulted in overpraising the "average" CBM.

Of course not
I definitely didn't say the actors need an Oscar to be seen as a good actor. Ordet was implying that I said that when I commented about Nicholas Hoult which is false.

That being said, ping me when Nicholas Hoult gets an Oscar nomination. He's average at best imo.

Yes
and I find that very sad, seeing "more of the same and cliche" movies being acclaimed by critics, this sort of thing was reserved only for really great and innovative films.
it sometimes seems that critics are currently only concerned with pleasing fan bases.

You have a problem with Shazam! there's a section for that movie, do it there.

I sure did and then I went back talking about Dark PhoeniX, a movie which thread should be about.

It just seems inappropriate to me when there's a newly released film and people criticizes those films in a Dark PhoeniX thread.... and as if Dark Phoenix is going to be a surefire good movie. Again there are other sections in the forum. I just can see people (the ones that anticipate Dark PhoeniX so much) not liking Endgame at the end of the month and voicing their opinion about in a Dark PhoeniX thread. That would be like me bringing up my dislike to Dark Phoenix (after I saw it) in a Spider-Man Far from Home thread.

I think Hoult is fierce
