Dark Phoenix X-Men: Dark Phoenix News and Speculation Thread - - - - - - Part 15

Totally agree.The Whole cast !

Ben Foster was badly miscast as Angel.

I actually think that style looks better on Jen. Probably because of the lack of scales.
Nothing will ever compare to Romijin’s Mystique though.

Holy crap. Just proves how much better Rebecca's OT Mystique was. Better hair colour, better hairline, better blue make-up. Better everything.
Unfortunately Rebecca was done dirty in X3. Remember when she said Raven was her "slave name" but in the prequels she's happy to go by that name :funny:. The retconning is cute.

People are really liking Sansa in this first GOT episode. Maybe they could use that for some publicity for Sophie Turner after all. Lol

This is another gripe of mine with Apoc on a conceptual level. Apocalypse would have benefited immensely If the X-Men were veterans and they brought back the original cast. A Thanos-esque villain like that is not who you use to face off against a team of teenagers who haven't even become the X-Men yet, on their FIRST adventure. Once again, Kinberg not caring about what makes SENSE for these characters. He thinks Apocalypse is a cool villain therefore "we must use En Sabah Nur now!" No sense of planning at all. There's that early 2000s mentality of making these movies again. Apocalypse should have at least been saved for the sequel when the X-Men were an established team. But even then, he's the type of villain that caps off a trilogy, fighting the X-Men at their peak.

Honestly, had they done "X-Men: Apocalypse" set in the present with the original cast, they would have gotten a lot more hype and I personally would have been more excited for it. The stakes would have been wayyy higher considering we just saw the present day X-Men escape a post-apocalyptic future already and this time, they don't have the past to help them stop Apocalypse. The deaths here would have had a much bigger impact because these characters have much deeper history and relationships with each other as opposed to lazily killing off Alex Summers.

I would have loved to see Marsden, Halle and Famke i.e the original 3 in the lead roles (Logan not on the team anymore). This could have added more context to the comics that Laura was adhering to in Logan. As for the sequels, instead of doing Dark Phoenix again for the umpteenth time (with no build up) they could have did X-Men 5: Onslaught in 2018. Maybe this Is the "event" that Logan and Charles were talking about in Logan.

The Wolverine has the franchise's lowest opening weekend. It also has the lowest domestic total out of any film of the franchise. Both numbers are unadjusted for inflation, meaning The Wolverine attracted even less audience members than the numbers would have us believe. I don't know how anyone can look at that and say Hugh and/or Wolverine is "the only draw of the 'original cast' films."

If anything, it only proves that Hugh needs Halle, Marsden, Janssen, Stewart, McKellen, Paquin, Ashmore et al as much as they need him.
X-Men V with the original cast and Apocalypse as the villain would have more eXciting. And that would open higher than 2016's Apocalypse even if it was as bad. Same thing if they decided to rehash Dark PhoeniX with the original cast. Though I would have been more frustrated if the final ot cast is with Simon Kinberg directing the film.

eXcellent.

I think Olivia Munn and Channing Tatum would have fit in with that cast, as they are closer to the age of Anna and Shawn. Though you forgot Omar Sy, who I think out of the four new characters featured in 2023 Dofp, is the one that should have returned for X-Men V. And you also forgot to include Daniel Cudmore. I know there's the Deadpool version and Daniel is not the best actor, but imo they never really gave Daniel Cudmore the right amount of material. While Ben Foster is not the ideal Angel but so as Shawn Ashmore as Iceman / Anna Paquin as Rogue, but they should have worked with what they have and further developed them, but of course we know the story of Fox wanting to save money because the ot cast was so eXpensive!

Heard via twitter that Godzilla King of the Monsters* and Dark Phoenix are expected to open day and date in China, May 31st and June 7th, respectively. Both have already passed censorship there.

Men In Black: International is also hoping to get the Dark Phoenix June 7th release date (as opposed to the June 14th US release date) to take advantage of Dragon Boat Festival weekend in China. Moving Dark Phoenix to June was a dumb move...

*Multiple sources are saying King of the Monsters is spectacular, brilliant and that reactions are comparable to Infinity War. Imagine being a Fox exec and offering the Directorial gig for Dark Phoenix to the wrong X-men writer.

Thats not a early 2000s mentality. thats still the mentality today. its just not the marvel MCU Thanos only mentality. there has been many worlds ending threatening comic book movies made these days that didn't need build up. thats not early 2000s mentality.

Just think if Ego in guardians 2 had got his way earth would be doomed. much bigger than a snap that takes away half a population.

Imagine being a Fox exec and offering the Directorial gig for Dark Phoenix to the wrong X-men writer.

And thats only if the films bad.

So, we have to wait for a movie with dumbiest lead and villain characters like IW?

Early 2000s is blowing your wad in the first movie. Using the most popular villain, adapting the most popular story, doing everything in the first movie because you aren't guaranteed a sequel. And that mentality was completely justified at the the time. But we aren't living in 2002 anymore, these studios can afford to plan their movies and trilogies out and it's clear that this new trilogy has no planning. They are making stuff up as they go along.

They used one of the strongest, most climatic X-Men villains in a movie where the X-Men were children. Why immediately go for "end of the world" stakes in a movie where a group of kids who will become the X-Men aren't even the X-Men yet? Why not use Mr. Sinister, Arcade, Black Tom Cassidy + Juggernaut or even the Acolytes (this would have fit considering where Days left off). Because Kinberg doesn't care and Apocalypse looks cool so they're gonna do him..

The big reason I agree that Apocalypse would’ve benefited from taking place in the present/near future is because, after showing everyone all happy and safe in DoFP’s altered future, the stakes of the in-between-past were drastically lowered.

You're correct about the stakes. Apocalypse needed to feel like an ultimate threat, which doesn't work at all in the 80's. The story momentum following DOFP was clear. Surely it makes sense to have Apocalypse rise directly as a result of the time travel and not because Moira moved a carpet. An OT 'Apocalypse' could have also seeded a lot of their planned future projects also: Introducing Jean and Scott's young son ahead of Deadpool 2, or some of the kids from 'New Mutants'. You could even elaborate on alternate universes ahead of 'Logan', seeing as Wolverine has experienced two realities at this point. Ultimately I can only think of one factor in favour of another prequel, and that was who was bound by contract. It was cheaper, basically.

But they needed to feature more James McAvoy, Jennifer Lawrence and Michael Fassbender because they are just so awesome...
