Dark Phoenix X-Men: Dark Phoenix News and Speculation Thread - - - - - - Part 15

Sophie Turner's performance was awful and I'm convinced that she can't be a lead actress in any role. She's also not beautiful enough to make up for her so-so acting skills.

She could star as Boy George in the upcoming Boy George biopic. That could be her star turn.

Donner wanted a version of Apocalypse that would have seen the OT face of against him. DoFP in her eyes was a reset to continue with the OT, and we would have LOVED that.

So would have everyone else. That’s why she’s distancing herself with anything to do with this new cast. She never had anything to do with them.

Interesting. Why did she produce First Class then?

Strongly disagree you there. Thought she was good and that seems to be the census about her performance.

I just got back from it and didn't hate it (but I'm a lousy critic and am easily entertained). It was sure as heck better than Last Stand (how's that for high praise?). I'm glad X-Men is back with Marvel. I feel pretty sure they'll pick up the pace, but, unfortunately, X-Men are going to have to go into a period of hibernation. Thanks Fox.

I didn't think she was terrible. I thought McAvoy and Fassbender underperformed, but they are both really fine actors and I'm not going to blame them. Everything was just sort of okay.

Ugh this just frustrates me. We could’ve had Apocalypse facing the reset timelines cast of James, Hugh, Famke, Anna, Halle, Ellen etc. Disappointed!!!

It never even got beyond an idea though. She also had to back out because of other accusations that never gained traction.

That’s remarkably similar to what Claremont had in mind for how to continue on with the movies past DOFP. Chris Claremont has said he had preferred Apocalypse be set in the present and he would’ve had Sophie Turner be cast as Jean’s daughter instead of just being cast as a younger version of her in the altered timeline.

Well, I went to see it tonight. A friend i was going with couldn't make it so I had to rush and then got stuck in traffic diversions, so I was late - the regular version had started so I opted for the 3D version starting shortly afterwards.

I'll post full thoughts in the review section but, basically, I do think it went out with a bit of a whimper.

Everything from (and including) what people keep calling the 'forest party' (actually on the grounds of the mansion estate) felt rushed and chopped. The film seemed to shrink as it went on, despite all the set pieces, and it all felt a bit flat by the end. I walked out with a 'well, that was... ohhhkay' feeling...

He said this in a video interview.

I'm spoiler tagging this vid since it does have a few F bombs in it.

He begins talking about it at 32: 25.

Warning Spoiler tagged For Strong Language.

His pitch is actually really interesting. I also dig his take on how he'd do the Dark Phoenix saga cinematically. Fox should've taken notes but hey they don't even exist anymore so it is what it is.

I'm not sad that this is the way the Fox Men run is ending. The saga that started with X1 already ended in DOFP.

Apocalypse and Dark Phoenix are merely Fox's version of the Amazing Spider-Man films. The First Class series went from being "soft reboot" Prequels to becoming a poorly executed reboot.

Lauren fought to keep the original cast
I remember she said that X4 leads to X5 back in 2011.

See, Dofp was really the X4 she pitched to foX.

Good riddance to whoever thought passing the torch to the younger version was a great idea... oh let me guess, he directed Dark PhoeniX.

I feel a bit vindicated by this. I always said the same thing "Original Cast should have starred in Apocalypse" especially after the movie turned out so dissappointing. Original Cast would have saved us all the origin story shenanigans and actually given us seasoned X-Men going against their "biggest" threat yet.

I'm not against that kind of origin story at all, but if you're doing Apocalypse and selling him as their biggest foe, it is underwhelming. Especially when you're saying the Ancient Mutant rises in the present... in the 80's? meh.

I think there would have definitely been more hype for that cast going against him rather than newbies.
