Dark Phoenix X-Men: Dark Phoenix News and Speculation Thread - - - - - - Part 15

I feel a bit vindicated by this. I always said the same thing "Original Cast should have starred in Apocalypse" especially after the movie turned out so dissappointing. Original Cast would have saved us all the origin story shenanigans and actually given us seasoned X-Men going against their "biggest" threat yet.

I'm not against that kind of origin story at all, but if you're doing Apocalypse and selling him as their biggest foe, it is underwhelming. Especially when you're saying the Ancient Mutant rises in the present... in the 80's? meh.

I think there would have definitely been more hype for that cast going against him rather than newbies.
And even if X5: Apocalypse turned out to be as bad as Apocalypse we got in 2016. At least it would have been more watchable, well at least to me.

I agree. The writing could have been just as lazy, but the story could have been more focused with all the X-Men being together from the start (like at the end of DOFP) to go against Apocalypse, instead of having to do origin stories.

It would have been cool to see if Psylocke, Nightcrawler and Angel were still going to be in the film and they could have introduced Channing Tatum as they already got him as Gambit. The film could have also opened bigger at the boX office. Probably no Moira and Mystique as well to take screentime from the real X-Men.

After Dofp opened so big and all the great reaction seeing the ot cast reunited, it was really an unwise decision to ditch them for the First Class cast. I cantbelieve Halle was in Kingsman and John Wick and not the X-Men. While James Marsden and Famke Jannsen look great for their age. Anna looks the part now as Rogue and Kelsey wouldn't demand the studio to show Beast in non furry form.

It would have been especially nice if it saved us from disinterested Mystique as "leader" and "I don't believe in the X-Men" Xavier.

damn i watched that claremont interview just now..

really liked his idea of the franchise being continued with the original casting at the end of DOFP and sophie turner being jean's and scott's daughter, Rachel who manifests the phoenix power. The next film being Apocalypse set in the present day and the phoenix leaving her at the film to feed and going super nova destorying a planet and ending with a cliffhanger of the Shi'ar Empire going to earth.

Any story set in the present day X-Men is automatically better than what we got in Apocalypse and Dark PhoeniX. Thats how much I didn't like the First Class films, post dofp.

Though I don't know about Prestige... I always ignored the Jean clone.

In hindsight they really should have stuck with the original cast. I don't see how it could've turned out worse than what we got, even though the acting wasn't at all the problem. But you were never going to convince a studio to boot Jennifer Lawrence so I get why it didn't happen, as much as virtuous, leader of the X-Men Mystique is just trash.

Hindsight is 20/20.

The problem with the franchise is they didn't have a solid long term plan and I'm glad that when the franchise finally reached its all time low/rock bottom, its the year that Marvel Studios got the rights back.

Yes, that is the root of all their issues.
Imagine if FoX wasn't bought by Disney. Their boots would have been shaking by n9w that another franchise of them underperformed big time at the boX office. And films like Gambit, The New Mutants, Kitty Pryde, Multiple Man, Laura would have to be really good just to get the goodwill/attention of the public.

I love that Shuller-Donner tweet! Lol I wish she kept it up. Wonder who the ire of her tweet is? Kinberg for sure. Parker too?

Must be a **** show right now at the “old” Fox for her to respond to the backlash.

20 years from now, people will also be praising Fant4stic as a cult classic rather than any previous or future iteration of the FF. :o

After rereading the leaks on the original third act, I think they should have went with that instead and just add more action scenes to it because it seems to pay-off plot points that were send up earlier in the film(idea of peace between humans and mutants and Vuk trying to control Jean).

Something this version of the third act just skips over in favor of a cheaper action set piece.

Donner wanted a version of Apocalypse that would have seen the OT face of against him. DoFP in her eyes was a reset to continue with the OT, and we would have LOVED that.

So would have everyone else. That’s why she’s distancing herself with anything to do with this new cast. She never had anything to do with them.

This is what I have been fantasizing about since I saw the DOFP Epilogue. It felt like a fresh start for the original cast and a conclusion to the arcs of the First Class cast. I think Olivia Munn’s Psylocke would have been a better fit with Famke’s Jean, James’ Cyclops and Halle’s Storm.

I remember LSD in 2014 after the release of DOFP retweeting and liking Tweets which clamored for the return of the original cast for another movie.

Good riddance to whoever thought passing the torch to the younger version was a great idea... oh let me guess, he directed Dark PhoeniX.

Fox. Its because the younger cast was cheaper. They have always been cheap with these movies. Word is that’s the real reason why they reshot the entire third act of this film on a train instead of just adding action scenes to the original large scale third act.

The third act was apparently just a trio of X-men. To paraphrase Ian McKellen's Magneto "Kinberg never learns."

If we're gonna play the shoulda-woulda-coulda game they should've hired a different writer and director.

The leaks Vuk actually succeeds at manipulating Jean and Charles’s worst fear happens.

Sophie Turner's performance was awful and I'm convinced that she can't be a lead actress in any role. She's also not beautiful enough to make up for her so-so acting skills.

Glad to see you only post every 3 months or so. Don't feel rushed.

Personally I think she's very beautiful and her performance wasn't as bad as people are making it out to be. Part of the blame lies on the script/dialogue.

I just got home from the theater. I didn't think it was terrible like so many others felt. It was just ok in my eyes but not horrendous.

I've said this for years but as far as the Fox-Men movies go I like most of them, but as movies. As adaptations they leave a LOT to be desired.

Basically I've been watching these movies for quite some years now mentally detaching them from the comics. Basically watching them as their own thing. That's how I've been able to enjoy most of them. Origins was lame as hell and X3 was very, very disappointing. I've enjoyed all the other films though, including Apocalypse. With Apocalypse it was only one small step away from being a no buy on home video like X3 but I enjoyed enough parts to know I'll want to rewatch at some point.

Basically I put DP near the bottom if I were ranking all the X films I did like. Not sure if I like it more than Apocalypse or not though.

This is what’s wrong with the internet. You seem like a beautiful person inside and out.

The thing is , you gotta remember the context of when the franchise began, which was the late 90s. There was zero notions of cinematic universes and long term plans for cbm in the 70s,80s, and 90s. Back then, if you had a hit cbm movie , you then moved on and made another , then another etc. The cbm didn't have long term plans other than to make more money.

They were basically one film at a time and if the next film contradicted the last film, so be it. The idea of long term plans basically started with the MCU in 2008 ,and even that was out of the norm at that time. Nolan may have been the closet to a long term plan with TDK trilogy, but even he basically focused on one film at a time with hints to what may come in the next film.

Fox was working off of the model of comic films which had basically been the norm up until the MCU. I suppose they could have tried to make long term plans after DOFP, but ultimately, I just don't think they saw the Feige style plan model as something that they wanted to do
