Dark Phoenix X-Men: Dark Phoenix News and Speculation Thread - - - - - - Part 15

Ever since I first heard that, I've looked on First Class as my Origins: Magneto movie. I think OM really could've been something. That, and an Origins: Storm movie were two things I was really hoping for back then.

I preferred what we got rather than a straight up Magneto solo movie. Pairing him with Charles is necessary as a ying yang dynamic. And a complete solo movie would have made him too likeable and heroic, you need to retain his anti-heroism trait.

Agree about Charles being in there. Erik's relationship and experiences with Charles play a huge part in shaping who he eventually becomes.

From the hints we have, I don't think there's any reason to think Charles wasn't a part of the Origins: Magneto film.

I wasn't a fan of the Origins idea from the start, but it sounds like that Magneto film could have been the best bits of First Class, so for the first time I kinda feel sad for its loss.

The script wasn't great, though I'm sure it would have gone through revisions had they moved forward with it. The best ideas from it it really did make it into FIRST CLASS, though, based on what I recall.

I thought FC was a solid reboot, and I would have much preferred we got at least three films in the swinging sixties rather than time jumping into the 90s to meet the OT crew. Keep Charles out of the chair and save the big blow up between the two from happening until after he and Erik develop their relationship onscreen.

While I likewise regret not getting the full blown Origins: Magneto movie, I don't think First Class was bad. I just think it would have been better if it were a trilogy. Movie 1: Lehnsherr and Xavier meet, become friends, team up. Movie 2: They work together in assembling the school, founding the X-Men. Movie 3: The underlying philosophical disagreements finally come to a head, and it tears the X-Men apart between them. Maybe have Shaw and the Hellfire Club be the recurring villains across all three movies.

No. I think fans would have supposed this movie more was titled something else and the selling point wasn’t that Jean was their greatest foe.
No. If we're talking about what people want and don't want, it's an X-men movie written and directed by Kinberg that they don't want. Kinberg's announcement that he was not only writer but director (no matter the title) doomed this movie. People were still open to a better adaptation of Dark Phoenix in 2016.

I remember many people being against the idea of a Dark Phoenix movie before Kinberg’s involvement was announced. Notably, ComicBookGirl19.

There's a dozen other issues that was wrong with the movie "Dark Phoenix" that was more problematic than "she didn't become Dark Phoenix so that's why I hated it."

Did you really think if they called it something else and didn't market as Jean become a villain that it would get better reviews?

I was talking the fan response for the past two years. Not post-release reviews.

My main issue with them going straight into Dark Phoenix after po calypso was barely knew the new Jean, or Scott for that matter. There needed to be another movie between, they should have done Proteus, then DP. But Fox probably knew in the background the merger was coming, so went straight to DP.

But you also have fans that were excited for the prospect of an improved Dark Phoenix. It's Kinberg's name that soured them of it.

You can't really paint the fans with the broad brush of "the fans didn't want another Dark Phoenix."

No. If you believe Kinberg (and I don't blame you if you don't) but he's on record as saying that he already had the Dark Phoenix in mind for the next movie and begun discussing the story for the film during post-production on Apocalypse.

So merger or not, if it was up to Kinberg (and it looked like it was), the next movie was going to be Dark Phoenix. This is one thing you can't blame the studio on...

Can I get a link to this, please?

Whos ever idea it was to go straight into DP, it was a mistake either way. They should have gone smaller and more intimate for the next movie, but for whatever reason, they wanted to stay big. I actually enjoyed Apocalypse and DP, but a movie in between could have made a big difference. Not to mention given Kinberg more practice in the directors chair.

Alas, I suppose it doesn’t matter now, the MCU have the property, though personally I am not as thrilled at that as others are.

I found it interesting that either people found this huge scale or small scale(which is what the film makers intended).

Here you go. Enjoy:
So speaking of the future, what can you tell me about the next X-Men movie? It’s called Supernova, is that right?
Kinberg: It’s not called Supernova. One of the things we do when we make these X-Men movies, to be totally candid, is — any of these movies, it’s on Star Wars, too — is you come up with fake names to throw people off the scent and when you’re out making the movie, the signs that show you where the locations are say Nova, or whatever the fake title is, and people figure it out, and I don’t even know why we do it anymore.

But at any rate, it’s not called Supernova. That was the code name for it. There’s yet another code name now. What I can tell you is that we’re in early stages of prep on it, and that it’s something that Hutch and I specifically have been talking about, as the producers of it and me as the writer of it, since post-production on Apocalypse, what the story would be and how would do something bold and radical and expand the universe in the same way that Logan feels bold and radical and certainly Deadpool does as well. And that’s where we are with it.

Thanks.

This movie happened because Kinberg wanted to make his vision of TLS work. It was driven by his ego, not a genuine interest in Jean or the characters.

And... that happened.

Nah, based on his interviews he was trying to make DOFP 2.0 with a commentary on X3. Basically giving Mystique’s narrative arc to Jean and not having her go down a dark path.

This doesn’t seem to be much of the case with the premise of the two-parter.

Nah, he was trying to make a "not superhero movie", "a drama", "a Logan inspired character piece", "inspired by Thor Ragnarok", "the The Dark Knight of the franchise", "a hitchcockian psychological drama", "a movie that would revolutionize the superhero genre", etc...

If he cared about Jean, he would've developed her and her relationships first.

Dont forget the ''includes a massive twist halfway through that will irrevocably change the course of the franchise.''

how lame, lol.
Mystique death being a huge twist that would change the.... this man is full of **** lol.
Maybe he was trying to mean that after her death, the focus on the next movies would finally be on the real X-Men, not on Raven Everdeen and Erik Meh-nsher.

"Change the course of the franchise," my ass. There is no course left, the franchise is over.
