Zombieland: Double Tap

This is pretty much the equivalent of microwaving NY style pizza. Sure, it wasn't perfect like when you originally had it... and the edges are a bit cold, but it does the job. It continues the story and style of the first only it's now 10 years later and the jokes aren't that fresh. It starts out in the White House and they stay in there for quite a while which was telling. It wasn't until they introduce Zoey Deutch where they start showing some promise. She does a phenomenal job playing a ditzy valley girl who would totally show up in Mean Girls. She keeps the movie interesting and funny for a good while until the movie keeps going into these random subplots that ultimately go nowhere. That's where they introduce other characters like Luke Wilson, Thomas Middleditch, and even Rosario Dawson. They only exist to be either cannon fodder or have a underdeveloped relationship with the main cast. The movie kinda yada yada their way into the 3rd act where you know how it will play out. It's not bad, but it's pretty predictable. The only bright spot might be the aftercredits where they do something funny and awesome. Overall, it's just passable.

"You're dead meat, slimeball!"

Thoughts: If you wanted a movie to sum up every awful thing about the 80s, this is a pretty good choice. There is literally two scenes worth watching in the first 70 minutes of this movie. The opening bit which is hilarious, and the 80s music video death sequence, that apparently takes place below deck on a boat, but looks like it is taking place in Tim Burton's Gotham. But once they get to New York, it is all gold. Well outside of some rather overt racism. It is all so hilariously over the top, including Jason pulling a Kool-Aid Man moment and just acting like a complete dick repeatedly. Seriously, he doesn't care at all. He just keeps going through people and their stuff, and it is great. I do have two questions though. Even when they got to New York, the bulk of it in Vancouver. So why did they need to be on the stupid boat for so long? Also, was I the only one grossed out by the male teacher hugging the main character, who is his student, the way he kept on doing? I will probably watch this again, but I'll just start it when they hit New York. Because once they get there, it is the best Jason movie. By a lot.

"Tricia, every culture in the history of our species has had mythology about creatures that spirit people away, that take them into some unreal underworld, enslave them, brutalize them..."

Thoughts: Mike Flanagan's first feature length film is not only a good one, it is one that puts on display what you can expect from him in the future. Very Hill House in its scares, even with it's smaller budget, it still feels substantial. Maybe my favorite aspect of his work is how casually he seems to display the scares. Where someone like Wan is all about the timing, Flanagan is all about how creepy it is to actually experience the scare, like it is really in the room with you. So even as you don't really see the monster here, it still feels like you experience it fully.

It has some fun parts but it's nowhere near the quality of Part III or The Final Chapter. Those are definitive Jason IMO.

I've watched this version so many times I'm more used to this version than the Scream Factory release. I would like to find the Second Sight BD, but the price for that seems a bit high right now. If I could get another commission I'd use it to get that. The one I'm gonna work on next is going towards Tammy And The T-Rex.

I once sat through 7 hours of other movies at a midnight movie marathon just to catch this flick on the big screen. That was a good ****ing evening. Or morning. I did have breakfast while watching this.

Wounds

A very Cronenberg-esque horror flick that also reminded me of The Ring for obvious reasons. Babak Anvari directed it who I thought did a great job with Under The Shadow and much like about another more high profile horror film this year, Wounds is basically about a couple who's relationship has imploded. It's got a great cast (Armie Hammer, Zazie Beetz, and Daktoa Johnson) and while it is a horror movie, they get a chance to flex their acting skills. It has plenty of body horror moments throughout it and there's some interesting subliminal messaging going on that kinda reminded me of The Exorcist and The Ring. It's not completely perfect, but I dig how much effort was put into this. Overall, it's worth a watch.

I thought I'd start on my rewatch for my marathon. The Thing an all time classic and one I have to watch every year.

"My name is Kaylie Ann Russell. The purpose of today's experiment is to prove the object behind me is responsible for at least 45 deaths in the 4 centuries of it's recorded existence."

Thoughts: Took me 6 years to finally see this movie starring Amy Pond, but I did it!!! This definitely feels like one I need to watch multiple times, because so much of it is intended to be confusing. That being said, for a film that basically takes place in a few rooms of a house, it feels a lot bigger then that. My one real issue with this one is the jumping around of the timeline. I get the idea and it does work for the most part, but because of how the mirror works, it can all get a bit muddled. I do get that is the intention, but I am not in love with it. That being said, another strong film from Flanagan.

34. Hush (2016) dir. Mike Flanagan
vpGNRER.gif

"..."

Thoughts: The first time I watched Hush, I really liked it. The second time I watched it, i loved it. To me, this feels like the budget movie you make before Oculus, but I guess he did them in reverse for some reason. The movie basically plays out like Don't Breathe in reverse, but unlike that one that simply lives on its premise, this movie has a lot more to it. Kate Siegel is great as at home modern Laura Croft, and this might be one of the few films that is shot mostly in darkness, that you can actually see. The weirdest thing about this one, is it is the only one of Flanagan's films that I can't really see much of in Hill House.

35. Ouija: Origins of Evil (2016) dir. Mike Flanagan

"Do you know what it feels like to be strangled to death?"

Thoughts: A lot like Annabelle: Creation, this film takes the promise of the crappy first film, and turns it into a really nice little film. Flanagan doesn't reinvent the wheel here. He just makes a really engaging, really creepy, really fun horror flick.

Surprised at how much I enjoyed this. Stylish and sleek slasher that packs a nice dose of macabre humor. The girl getting sprayed with blood had me cackling.

Frankenstein

It's been over a decade since I last saw it (not to mention I haven't read the Mary Shelley book since middle school), so a lot of it felt fresh to me. It's one of the more interesting precode films because how daring it was back in 1931. Also, I don't think we credit James Whale enough for his filmography and more importantly this film and how he moved cinema forward. It's kinda incredible this was just a little over an hour long because they do a good job filling out so much story. Boris Karloff is to this movie what Marolon Brando is to The Godfather. They both are the centerpiece of the story, but the movie really is about Colin Clive as Dr. Frankenstein much like The Godfather is really about Al Pacino as Michael Corleone. Also the one scene that doesn't get talked about enough that I loved was the part where the father is holding his dead daughter across the city. It's crazy how well that was shot and executed.

"You're so much smaller then I remember."

Thoughts: Man, **** this movie. I thought I was in for a fun, sexy, scary flick, full of sexy Carla Gugino being sexy. It was like that for about 5 minutes and then turned into anything but. Is this movie good? Yes. It's very good actually. Is it scary? It has some of the creepiest imagery I can remember. Is this a good time? No, no it is not. Also the use of composites in this movie is just odd. It looks so real, and then you have these scenes that feel made for TV. Big scenes too.

"You know, this is the first woman's flat I've been in that didn't have at least 20 mirrors in it."

Thoughts: A movie considered too gay for the 1930s, it is as tame as you expect from something considered outrageous from the 1930s. That doesn't mean I didn't like it. It's a cheesy little flick, that never really bored me. But considering this had a bit of hype to it, I expected more. Also I did not realize this was a legit sequel to the original Dracula. That's pretty cool.
