This episode was AMAZING!

It had everything I had waited 3+ years to see...Clark and Lex FULL ON ENEMIES!!!

That confrontation in the mansion...PERFECTION, just the way I'd imagined it would be.

Last shot, also perfect.

My favorite of the whole epi though? Lex getting rid of Alexander and officially making the turn to the dark side.

My only gripe of the episode...Lois and Jimmy subplot, felt really tacked on and unnecessary.

Hopefully they keep the momentum going...

THAT was an AMAZing epsiode. that was probably the best episode in the last couple of years. In fact, i might go on a limb here and say it's probably the best episode of the entire series. not month, not season, of the entire series.

Seriously, this episode is definately up there as one of the best of the series...it was a very DEFINING episode in the same vein as Rosetta.

Anyone remember the scene right after the murder when Clark and Lex are just staring at each other? As Lex continues to walk away, Clark follows him staring intently...

A previous poster mentioned this scene and I also thought it was awesome...
just the way they were just burning holes into one another with their eyes...

Clark knowing something is up, Lex knowing that Clark knows but can't prove anything...very classic Supes vs. Lex kind of vibe...

I also think it's exactly the signification of Lex last words to Lionel before killing him " nobody will ever remember your name ".
He will erase any mention of Lionel Luthor, and Luthorcorp will become Lexcorp ( In fact, it's allready Lexcorp in Lex head ). That last sentence really enjoyed me because I immediately thought " Lexcorp, here we come ".

I also like when he blamed his father for betraying him for the traveler. It's so good. Lex is jalous of clark for being all that he can't be, being " the perfect son ", but his true hate and obsession is with the traveler... kael el... Superman. He hates him with passion for having stolen not only his hair... but his life, and that's really a good move.

Yes, It's time to see her now that Lex is completely evil.

And it's also time to have Perry back and make him the daily planet editor in chief

For the past 2 or 3 years, I thought Smallville had become really bad. The superman mythos was butchered in some ways. But the current arc and expecially the episode is really great. The piece of the puzzle slowly assemble in a solid way to align in the superman story ( In fact, only one great problem stay, how will they solve the glasses thing ? )

I posted my review before the episode actually aired - thanks to our friends from Canada - so I'm going to repost it here since everyone has seen it now...



After watching the episode few minutes ago, I have to say I was impressed. Much better than anything we've seen this season.
A dark, yet gripping episode, solidifying Lex's destiny as Clark's enemy and the villain of the story.

Good stuff:
- Lex killed Lionel, throwing him off the window.
- Lex is obsessed beyond control to find a secret that doesn't belong to him.
- Lionel seemed reconciled with his impending death.
- Lex & Clark lock eyes at the step of LuthorCorp where Lionel was lying dead.
- Clark is not fooled, he knows Lionel would never commit suicide.
- Gina makes the ultimate mistake and opens her cards to Lex, she knows that he killed Lionel.
- Lex allows Gina to think he cares for her loyalty.
- Little Lex fighting a losing battle.
- Lionel's message from the grave, he is a good guy.
- Lois & Jimmy still working together.
- Lex firing Chloe, there was no emotion in him, he knew what he wanted and how to get it. Intimidate Chloe and get rid of her.
- Gina's loyalty to Lex. Too bad she ain't Mercy.
- Gina sees everything and has finally the answer to all of Lex's questions...
- ... only to be killed few minutes later, IMO from Lex's henchman covering all loose ends about the murder of his father.
- Lex & Clark confrontation in his study.
- Clark uses his powers and saves Lois & Jimmy.
- Little Lex is gone for ever.
- Chloe opens Clark's eyes yet again to his destiny.
- Clark finally realises that he needs to stop Lex.
- The graveyard scene, Clark defiant pays his respects to Lionel and throws some earth in his grave.

Bad stuff:
- Clark should not have been urged by Chloe to follow her when they heard Lionel died.
- Not much explaining how Lionel dedicated his life to keep Clark's secret safe. what was all the MB we saw between season 1&3?
- Jimmy is the one uncovering the truth of the photo? At which point are we to believe that this is Lois Lane, world famous hound-dog reporter?
- How did Chloe get her messages from Jimmy if she had forgotten her mobile at the Planet for Gina to see?
- Why did Clark allow himself to be caught by Lex in his office? He could have easily zapped out of there and Lex would have never found out.
- Lex has no money any more for security?
- Chloe opens Clark's eyes yet again to his destiny. Did we need the Clark pity party?

I would give it a 4.5 out of 5 because of the pity party. Clark should know better by now. On the other hand, Lex killed two people in one episode!!!!

whoever directed this epsiode should move to hollywood

because whole direction of episode was quite good and on same level as any big hollywood movie

that hack Dj cruso is doing well with movies like disturbia (he started with directing smallvill episode)

Director Ken Horton is a first timer, or at least I couldn't find any other directing credits on his profile on tv.com anyway.

He's normally a producer on the show.

Last night's Smallville was the one I've been waiting 7 YEARS for !!!!!!

I always knew LEX's "Descent" to being full-blown evil will have to do with killing his father and he did. But to top it off he took out whatever remaing innocents he had left in one of the most memoraible scene in the Smallville series.

Excellent show last night!!!

wow. I almost wrote off the show after the last 3 pieces of garbage they called Smallville episodes, but last night was FANTASTIC. The best episode in about 2 seasons. I kept waiting for some cockamamey plot device that brought Lionel back from the dead and it never happened. Glad to see they finally followed through on what we all knew was coming, and the way they handled Lionel's death as well as Lex symbolically burning the "good little boy" in his head was excellent. 5 out of 5.

Only thing that baffles me is that Lex is offing people who look at him the wrong way now, but Chloe basically double crosses him and keeps things from him at every turn and she just gets the "bonk on the head."

Preview for next week looks great as well, let's hope Al & Miles blow us away with their Final 4 episodes.

Now back to my Fortress of Solitude.

I don't know about that because she wouldn't tell anyone he did it. I had a feeling he was going to use her...

I had thought her murder meant that someone else is looking for the traveler and realized she might have constituted a threat to their plans.

Just wanted to comment on these three points. I'm pretty sure Lionel was an MB in seasons 1-3. Remember, the other Veritasers didn't trust Lionel either (and he did kind of have them all killed). It wasn't until Season 4's Transference, when Lionel felt Clark's presence, that he started to see the error of his ways. Being possessed by Jor-El in Season 5 completely transformed Lionel and he then realized the sanctity of his original Veritas mission.

As for Chloe getting Jimmy's message, I think Jimmy said he emailed her as well, so maybe she checked that before? Also, she could have seen the text before leaving the phone on her desk.

At first, I was thinking the same thing: why did Clark allow himself to be caught by Lex. But then I realized, that's exactly it! He allowed himself because he wanted to get caught. You can tell by their convo that Clark wanted to confront Lex about what he knows. That was a chill-inducing moment too. I have to agree with an earlier poster that the scene in front of Luthorcorp with Lex and Clark burning holes into each other was very Superman/Lex from the comics. Well done!

Agreed. "Descent" is Lex's "Rosetta." All it needed was a cameo by Gene Hackman!

I assumed Lex killed Gina because of two reasons. Like you said, you can tell he was getting annoyed by her "adoration." Plus, he's been burned by too many seemingly devoted women in the past, so maybe it was a preemptive strike. And two, you saw something click in his head when she deduced he killed Lionel. He doesn't trust her. Simple as that.
