7.17 - Sleeper - Discussion Thread (Spoilers)

If it is just a TV Show then why does it bother you so much about what other people think about an episode ? Maybe you should take your own advice. Both you & the fans voicing their opinions are both taking things to seriously if we go by what your saying

on the infonet, everything is serious :meanie:

Has anyone noticed there is A LOT of purple mise-en-scene whilst there are Lex scenes recently?

Its been a motif of varying incarnations for years.

I don't think you're using mise-en-scene correctly...

But they are using a lot of purple in props, set dressing and in the costumes...

Not one of Smallville's shining moments. I literally found myself watching the clock to see when it was going to end.

I hate when they devote episodes to the storylines of the tertiary characters like Chloe, Jimmy, etc. Not only was it uninteresting but it was silly and ridiculous. Jimmy isnt even a competent photographer yet but he can hack computers and fight government agents? Why would this Jimmy ever get into photography?

Last 5 minutes were the best part. But I hope they approach this carefully and think things through as time travel is VERY difficult to handle and can get messy really quickly.

Next week looks promising. The shot of Welling as reporter Clark was awesome.

The episode wasn't bad actually, just cut off the scenes of Jimmy Bond and the episode I done will be fine. :p

My feelings are quite the same across the board. EXCEPT... I may have to watch the ep again. Crazy, I know, except I was laughing through most of it and often tuning out due to ridiculousness. But the last 5 minutes were pretty cool. A hint of how much better coming episodes will be.

I was a film major in college and I took the term to be used more in a thematic context, not referring to the the details of the scene, like props and wardrobe.

I think if you look at the original French meaning, yeah: it describes what is being filmed.

Not how I would use the term at all, but a more literal use isn't wrong...

*shrug*

In American usage it's more metaphorical and describes how the scene is presented to convey thematic content.

Agreed, there was much that was absolutely absurd in this ep with the feds and Jimmy Bond.

And what was Clark's deal just completely blowing off Lex and the whole keys and ability to control him thing. A complete turn around from the previous episode. Now he just wants to say screw the fact that some twisted power monger will be able to control me and rule the world--my girlfriend's more important...uugghh.

Then on top of that he kept blaming Jor-El for everything and didn't mention Brainiac at all---insane! I'm glad Chloe called him out on that, at least someone noticed.

Yes the time travel is going to be tricky. I did have a thought after viewing it--I know Brainiac can travel through space back to a Krypton next to a red sun---but wtf about Kara. Wouldn't she lose her powers and ultimately die in space by the time she left our galaxy and was under the red sun's power?

Oh and not to mention that Clark was in like 5 minutes of this episode tonight.

Oh well, next week looks promising with that quick glimpse of Clark in the promo.

I liked it. The Chloe and Jimmy thing got annoying but Clark and Lex arcs were ill!

^Yes Lex was a bright spot in the episode. Especially his little talk with Jimmy about "family".

That was about all I liked of this one, but to each his own.

I've always stuck by Smallville and been a very loyal fan from the very start but this episode was the worst piece of television I've ever seen. it was crap from start to finish! the whole Jimmy/Chloe plot was stupid! I hope to god i never have to sit through another smallville episode like this again. I want 40 minutes of my life back please!

I'm actually doing media studies and i've been taught its more about what the scene says about the characters. Like how does the scene convey what is happening in the scene and what type of character were deling with. Like the Kent Farm its warm and friendly yet its cut off from people showing similarities in teh character of Clark he's kind he's a good guy yet he cuts himself off from people.

I liked this episode. But yeah taht did bother me taht he could do all that yet he's struggling as a photgrapher. but 2bh, i've never really liked Jimmy so...

Yeah it was loved it were he pushed his glasses up.

Well said Hulk, as far as Jimmy doing something when he's obviously educated to do better I guess you have to chalk it up to TV. It's definitely one of the things I hate about TV shows, especially when people live well and their never working??

Your spot on with the time travel, they need to be very careful. It could come across very cool or very campy.

It's easy for me to look past a bad episode because I expect them in any series. But I can look past them because A) The show got an actor to play this part that is SPOT ON THE MONEY, which makes the show very enjoyable. And B) Because this show has made my neck hairs stand up with pure Superman like entertainment and he's never even put the costume on. I could take a whole page to list those awesome moments. I'm glad the show has been good enough to make a long run in the end.

Yeah, that's more what I took it as....

Yeah... the episode bored me silly.

I was like Hulk, I kept looking at the clock to see how much more time was left before it was over. However, for me it was more because I was looking forward to the return of Supernatural...

That, unlike SV, was a terrific episode.

Yeah it was loved it were he pushed his glasses up.

It was the best part of this episode: the preview for the next one.

Did fans dislike Season 5's Noir (Jimmy's other full-on episode) as much as they are voicing their dislike for this???

Noir was 6th season, not the 5th, and I didn't like it much at all.

Sorta like how I feel about this one.

Noir was beautifully shot, but the story was a mess.

I thought Noir was good. I love the old noir style films anyway.

Noir was beautifully filmed.

Nonetheless both Noir and Sleeper were about Jimmy becoming or seeing himself more than what he is. Although as fans we dislike these types of 'episode fillers', however it does fit with his character and how he sees himself next to his 'pal' superman.

We shouldn't dislike these episodes to much, they help to strengthen our main character by seeing how others view him.
