8.15 - Infamous - Discussion Thread (Spoilers)

Consider this: Clark picking up the desk (or a car) by the end would be the same (relatively) as you picking up a little toy matchbox car by the bumper, or a dollhouse-sized desk.

So, given Clark's otherworldy strength, it is completely realistic to see those things - and really cool too. :D

ETA: Oh wait... I get it. Are you thinking about the angle for breakage? Yeah... that's a valid point I guess, but no, it doesn't bother me. Forest through the trees, ya know?

Yes exactly, I understand that he's strong enough to do it. I mean he's Clark Kent :cwink: But it's just as you said, there's no way that a bumper can support the whole weight of a car, and same about the desk. And that's my problem with it. But I still love the show, just like to point things out :woot:

just ten more days...

poor Lois waiting for Clark to pick her up... lol, I wanna hear Clark's excuse for being late....

And bigger...

There are a few more, I'm just being lazy now. Someone else will post them, I'm sure.

This episode is looking fantabulous.

I really hope they break the mold once again and let Lois in on his secret permanently.

At this point in the show, I don't think I'd be totally opposed to that. I just don't think it's gonna be permanent at this point.

Great pics

But if you pick up a matchbox car by its bumper, does the rest of it break? :cwink:

And those pics you've posted are yummy!! :shock

I have a little question though, are they stretch marks on Erica's back? :meanie: *meow*

A matchbox car doesn't have the same mass as a steel desk. gohei_ is correct. Clark has no counter balance to the weight of the desk, and by grabbing it in the corner like he's doing, he'd just rip a piece off. If he had his other hand on the top of the desk pushing down however, that would work. Think of holding a pizza box by the corner. You have to grip it between fingers. If you try to lift the box from the corner by only supporting the bottom, like Clark is doing with the desk, the weight of the box on the other side will pull it down. This has nothing to do with Clark's strength. Clark could pick it up with two fingers, but he has to hold it correctly. Compressing it between his hands like a sandwich is how it should have been done. This is physics folks, again. ;)

But that wouldn't look as cool:) Seeing as how no one can do that at all, i think its ok for a little suspension of disbelief.

FOS will have to wipe out everyone's memory in SV :-/
If the fos wasnt damages still yes but it cant currently. Also all the new stills for the episode looks sweet. CAnt wait for next week. Also cant wait to see how the episode ends.

Matter of opinion. I think it would look very cool since it would look real.

Seeing as how no one can do that at all,
Do what? Hold a desk between two hands like a sandwich? Clark can do that without breaking a sweat.

It's not suspension of disbelief though. This is about making something look real so you don't have to suspend disbelief.

On the commentary track for the Transformers' DVD, Michael Bay talked about the CGI effects for the robots and how very tiny, almost imperceptible light reflections were added to the skins in order to make them look more realistic. It's not something audiences would look for per se, but the eye would see such scenes as somehow "not right" if the reflections weren't there. In audio, white noise is sometimes added to sound tracks in order to make the sound clearer. This is counterintuitive, but it's how the brain works. Large, unbalanced weights look phony. We all know Clark can lift a desk with Lois on it - no problem - but physics won't allow him to do it the way he's doing it in the picture, so it looks stupid, not cool. At least grab a leg or something. Make it *look* real. That's all I'm saying.

You know .....I only said that to instigate such a response and subsequent discussion thereof. :oldrazz:

ROF! Y'know, after the lengthy vollies we had involving a tethered helicopter, I should know better, but I'm easily sucked into these kinds of discussions. Quantum theory, anybody? :p

How about we never mention the discussion about the helicopter again. :(

When has real world physics ever applied to comic books?

Since comic books are drawn, I'd say probably never. But this is a different medium, and effects' teams strive to make a scene as "realistic" as possible. Even on SV, Mat Beck once commented on the topic. In the episode Nocturne, they intentionally slowed Clark down just before he tackled Byron into a water well because as Beck pointed out, in the real world, Clark hitting Byron at super-speed would be like getting run over by a freight train. They took this into account to make the scene appear more realistic. I appreciate his attention to detail, especially for this genre. It's what separates a good effects house from a crappy one. ;)

He may have shoved his thumb into the the desk so he has a better grip on it. Don't know, but I guess its possible.

Ah, now you're talking! If they show Clark grabbing it that way, and perhaps crushing the corner a bit since that would likely happen when such a large mass is supported by just its corner, I'll applaud them. THAT's how you make a scene realistic and exciting at the same time. Lois' reaction to what Clark does is the icing on the cake.

BTW, in all this discussion, I haven't actually commented on the pictures themselves. Wet Clark? Mmmmmmmmm :D

And check out that small image with Clark holding the... whatever that thing is supposed to be? An electrical conduit? With tinfoil wrapping and a smoking steel wool ball at the end. Hah!!! Hysterical. And it looks like he has a boo boo there too. Poor Clarky. ;)

New scene from Infamous:

This scene is beyond prefect it foreshadows exactly the kind of response I'd expect from Lois towards Clark revealing his secret . Until the famous shirt rip revealing the superman emblem .

In smallville's case he displays his super powers .

Ok let me just go on record saying I hate The "Red Blue Blur" name I hope they change the name to something else .

Agreed...I wish they had stuck with the Good Samaritan one they were using originally.

yea very cool scene cant wait for next week's episode. Also i agree they should have stucked to that good samaritan name. OR atless gone with a more superman like nickname like boyscout or something.
