86th Annual Academy Awards (2014) - Part 2

Let's hope Chiwetel is on Marvel's radar for a certain King of Wakanda.

Schindler's List is pretty harrowing. Ralph Fiennes' character is actually somewhat similar to Michael Fassbender's in 12 Years a Slave, IMO.

The Auschwitz sequence is one of the most terrifying things I have ever seen in my life.

Because there are also live-action elements and performers in almost every shot. Like you said, it's a different process, but by no means a less-difficult one, and no less impressive when it's pulled off successfully.

The divide is wide enough and common enough though that I think the Academy could warrant creating different awards, similar to how they designate between Sound Mixing and Sound Editing.

Honestly, I still get that unsettled feeling in the pit of my stomach whenever I think about Schindler's List. Absolutely harrowing and unforgettable.

That scene really, really disturbed me. There's not even really any violence in it, but it's so bone-chilling.

I too have issues with digital cinematography being nominated, it's an unfair advantage.

Would you have issues with movies that aren't VFX-heavy that were shot digitally? Seems hypocritical.

I mean, I can see where people are coming from with films like Gravity, Avatar and Life of Pi -- but keep in mind the DOP does work with the VFX team and supervises the color timing and such. So they're still 'director of photography', only in a less traditional sense.

But for movies like Pi and Avatar, they were picked over the better-looking competition. Skyfall was digitally shot, and that looked so much better than Pi. And Inglourious Basterds and Harry Potter and the Half-Blood Prince were visually more stunning than Avatar.

Gravity deserved that Best Cinematography win.

Now that I could get on board with.

Schindler's List was far from an awful movie (in fact, I thought it was quite good even though it was harrowing), but IMO, it only needs to be watched once.

Why does The Academy hate DiCaprio so much? :(

That's kind of how I feel about 12 Years a Slave. Schindler has more rewatchability for me.

I pretty much consider 12 Years to American slavery what Schindler's List is to the Holocaust.

Now I just gotta wait for Her to hit Blu-Ray. Didn't have a chance to see that either.

**** my job :csad:.

I can't wait till Lil B wins an Oscar next year for best Original Song.I can feel it.

12 Years a Slave definitely deserved it, I saw it in the theater and was just blown away by it.
I was just glad American Hustle didn't win. :o

Ironically Tarantino made a mockery of both topics, which gave Christoph Waltz both of his Oscars.

Nothing wrong with making a mockery of Nazis though.

I predicted almost all of the big winners this year. And I'm so happy I was right. I do hope that Chiwetel Ejiofor gets his Oscar one day as well as his post-Oscar leading man status (Marvel, this man better be your T'Challa). He was a true second best to McConaughey this year and that is a compliment. And honestly, I was shocked at Best Actress. With how Gravity was sweeping nearly everything it was nominated for, I thought Bullock would win it again. Since Waltz got it two consecutive years, it didn't seem like a stretch. But congratulations to Cate Blanchett. It's been a hot minute since she last won one.

With all that said, I am so happy that Nyong'o won for Best Supporting Actress. Spike Jonze winning for Best Original Screenplay and 12 Years A Slave winning Best Picture were my highlights. I love that they won.

I will say this. I'm not an expert on what qualifies for cinematography but this is two years in a row where I feel a cinematographer has won the award based on the work of terrific visual effects. Correct me if I am wrong, cinematography aficionados.

I have to revisit Schindler's List. Haven't seen it for a long time, but I don't know how it will be. War films are always difficult to watch no matter how good they are. After watching Black Hawk Down, I was convinced that was the last time ill see it. Not because it was bad, but bc it was too damn emotionally draining.

I don't get this bias against VFX-heavy films for cinematography. Lubeski had to do these extremely long takes that also had to blend seamlessly with the VFX, and that is the work of BOTH the cinematographer and the VFX team to achieve that. VFX-heavy films are not easier to shoot, they're harder. Let's not forget, American Society of Cinematographers also gave Lubeski top honors, so the people who actually do this for a living and know what all it entails also felt like his work was the best of the year.

Becuz while the direction and final shots were amazing, very little had to do with cinematography. Most of that praise should b leveled on the visual effects crew. When u compare how much was actually put on film compared to what was created by a team of computer genuises, well there is no comparison. Alfonso's agenious and vis crews made that movie work. The photography is beautiful but hardly the work of the man behind the camera. He played s part but the most amazing shots of that film were obviously created in post production. Not in traditional terms, ala shot with a camerautiliIng real light and actual locations. Roger Deakins now there is somebody who knows how to use a camera
