9.10 - Disciple- Discussion Thread (Spoilers)

It may just be a TV show but i have heard so much about Haiti I could spit. I just could care less about what happened there.

This, my friends, is the reason our world is in such a horrible state.

What is wrong with you? It's just a tv show, one week isn't that long. The people in Haiti are without homes right now. Show a little empathy. :cmad:

I really wish I could just ban someone for making such an insensitive hateful pathetic post....but all I can do is shake my head in disgust, pray that you get counseling, and tell you that if you make another one like it it will be considered trolling and then you will be infracted or probated.

yea i too wish we were still getting the episode friday but i can live with a week delay. it is for a good cause.

I don't know why you're being so harsh on him. It may be a cruel and unsympathetic thing to say but in essence that's how it is. Of course everyone cares a little, but we're not physically there, we're comfortably sitting in our homes, and you can't blame him for being tired of hearing about it every single day if that's how he feels.

I am sorry, Lee I was just expressing how I felt about the situation. I won't say anything like it again but I do see the delaying of an AMERICAN show for a HAITIAN crisis a tad bit absurd. I can understand it being for a good cause and such but I just do not really feel that these kinda things even really help that much. My Dad has been apart of telethons for diseases and such they just dont bring enough in. Now if they donated the money that the ad space for this episode was bringing in I would be totally for that because it is probably a substantial amount more than what this event will bring in.

Thank you for understanding my position even if you do not agree.

I absolutely agree. That's disgusting to hear. For someone so concerned for a show about a Superhero, which should be making you wanna be a better person by watching what is essentially the perfect person morality wise, its ridiculous he'd think that. I don't think Clark would think something like that.

yea i too wish we were still getting the episode friday but i can live with a week delay. it is for a good cause.
I agree. And plus we get two episodes back to back for two weeks in a row now, so I'm not compaining.

oh next week they are going to air a second episode/rerun? that would be nice. Maybe CW finally saw that we dont need to have stupid top model episodes aired on friday lol.

I looked it up on TV Guide and it says both Disciple and Legion are airing next week. I forgot Legion was a S8 episode, lol.

You don't Webhead? I mean yea I don't want her to die either but I think she needs to leave the show

well i know how alot of fans feel about chloe at times. she is still a character i like alot. and perferably if she is staying or leaving come the end of the series i just dont want to see her killed off. There is just no real need for that. Far to many characters have been killed off. and it would blow one of the last original created for show characters to be killed. I rather her if she isnt going to be in tenth season to just leave like martha/lana did for what ever reason. But leave it open in the case if allison wanted to do any guest spots.

If it was a choice between Lois dying & Chloe becoming Lois at the end of the show or Chloe just simply dying which would it be ?

Yeah I am also one of the few around hear who rather see Chloe leave than die. Everybody seems to die at the end of the year, I just think that is played out....

but I would choose Chloe dying over Lois dying and Chloe becoming Lois....

yea death is just smallville's ace in the hole deal. and i am sick of it at times why does this guy or that guy have to be killed off. When it could be far easier to just write off with a good way. Like pete wanting to start a new life away from clark and all the alien drama, to martha becoming a us senator, and then lana leaving and all that. Heck i still as i said rather have allison's chloe just leave metropolis if she isnt going to be in tenth season. We know how things always go when folks die in smallville clark will blame himself for not being able to save her and then we would be back to a clark in the dumps deal and we dont need that. Perferably i am still in the boat if she leaves and if she is going to be tangoing with waller and checkmate during the second half of the season.

That would be a good place to put chloe have her either forced into working with checkmate or works for them but also work for the heroes as a mole in the group. Or to be a liason from heroes to the govt and all that. so then if she is gone they can talk about chloe doing these things and leave it open as i said for her to pop in once or twice in the following season and more so if checkmate/waller goes on into 10th season which i hope.

I'm fine with Chloe leaving but I do not want to see her be the reason Clark becomes Superman. I would vomit.

I'm pretty indifferent on whether Chloe should die or just leave. I used to love her character but the past 2 seasons have really kind of ruined her.

I think it would be interesting if her final outcome was being institutionalized like her mother. I know her mother had powers and that's why she was there, but was it ever cleared up if she was actually mentally handicapped? If she really did have a handicap, then I could see it happening to Chloe since it was stated that it's hereditary. Plus, I'm sure it would make the people over sat TWoP SO pissed lol.

I don't know, just an idea.

This, my friends, is the reason our world is in such a horrible state.

I know right, cable companies delaying the airing of their show, so that the cable and satelite connections can be restored in time for the winter premier. Forget shelter and food.

The two-hour “Smallville” movie “Absolute Justice” is set to air on Feb 5, 2010. Written by Newsarama’s Reader Favorite writer Geoff Johns, the movie will see Clark and Oliver meeting with the heroes of old, the Justice Society of America.

But before the JSA goodness, we have “Disciple” on January 29th. In this episode, Ollie has a run in with his former teacher, Dark Archer (Steve Bacic), who's kidnapped all his lady friends. Let's just say, they don't get along. We spoke with Justin Hartley, who plays Oliver Queen, the Green Arrow, about the second half of the season. Hartley spills some juicy info on the episode, Ollie's upcoming clash with Hawkman (Michael Shanks), why he really doesn't want anyone else from the universe to show up and the return of Speedy (Elise Gatien). He also drops a major hint about an upcoming love affair.

Newsarama: I know you have a run in with Dark Archer in the upcoming episode. So can you give us some info on the relationship you guys have? Sort of set it up for us?

Justin Hartley: Sure. So basically we've all seen Oliver take this turn for the worse this year and then kind of recover from it. And right now he's on the brink of recovering from this whole downward spiral thing and trying to figure out who he is and making sure...he's teetering back and forth, and I don't think he really trusts himself that much. But he's on this good path right now. So what happens is, because timing is everything on 'Smallville', right? This Dark Archer, this guy from Oliver's past comes back to kind of claim what's rightfully his. They were both members of this underground society and one of the deals of this society is, when you get older, your apprentice is supposed to take your life so that you don't watch yourself decay and all that stuff. So he comes back to claim that, and people around Oliver are kind of mistaking him for Oliver. They're not quite sure if it's Oliver. Maybe he's lost his mind, maybe he really is a bad guy. So they start second guessing him, which is kind of depressing in a little way. But they square off at the end, and...I'm not sure if I should tell you what exactly happens, but I am in the next episode, so I don't die. I can tell you that. [laughs] They square off, and Oliver is trying to claim what is his, saying, 'Look. I've changed. I'm a different person. That's not me anymore.' So there is a big face off there.

Nrama: We know that Speedy is back.

Hartley: Yes. She's one of the victims of the Dark Archer. What he's doing is, when Oliver denies him, when he says, 'Look, I'm not part of that anymore,' he stars going after people that Oliver cares about, so he goes after Speedy and Lois (Erica Durance) and Chloe (Allison Mack), and it's only a matter of time before things get really bad. So he's got to figure out a way to stop this guy from doing what he's doing, without giving this guy what he wants. So it's kind of an interesting little situation he's got himself into.

Nrama: Everyone is really freaking out about the two hour “Absolute Justice”. If Twitter is to be believed, it's going to be the highest rated show in television history.

Hartley: [laughs] Good!

http://i.newsarama.com/images/Absolute-Justice-promo_02.jpg

Nrama: So how does “Disciple” set up “Absolute Justice”? Or does it?

Hartley: No...you know...it does in a way. I think it sets up Oliver for what he does in “Absolute Justice” more than the series. Those two shows are basically...I don't want to say they're stand alone shows, because they're not. They do tie into the main theme of the year. But those two episodes, they were so well done that they stand on their own. They don't contradict anything that we've done all year, but at the same time, they don't necessarily need any of that to stand on their own. They're individuals. It's basically a movie...and then afterwards we still talk about it a bit. In the subsequent episodes, we still talk about what's happened in those two. It doesn't set up the story line for any other character, but...for all the other heroic things that Oliver's doing, or that Green Arrow's doing in “Absolute Justice” and the things he does and the decisions he makes in “Disciple” kind of makes it more believable that this guy just came back from this downward, hurried momentum, is now kind of back and ready to do the hero thing.

Nrama: I read the official description of “Absolute Justice”, but they don't really talk much about what's going on with Oliver. Michael Shanks (Hawkman) has talked about you guys butting heads. Geoff Johns has spoken about a 'shared behavior'. So can you talk a bit about your role in that?

Hartley: First of all, huge mistake not mentioning my name. [laughs] Just kidding. Green Arrow is all through the thing and Oliver is all through the thing. It's mostly about the Justice Society, and Clark kind of finding out...there is this interesting thing where you find out who was after them is now after us. So we have to work together. And you're right. Hawkman and Green Arrow do not get along. They do not see eye to eye politically. [laughs] They don't see eye to eye on any kind of social issue. But yet they're stuck together because they work well together. So here you have two guys that are basically forced to work together to find out who the 'bad guy' is, and put a stop to all this bleeding, and in the process, they kind of, towards the end, grow to...I don't want to say like each other, because I don't think that really ever happens, but a mutual respect is kind of formed throughout the course of the show. I would say about half way through the second one, when you start to see that, although I don't agree with everything he's doing and he doesn't agree with everything I'm doing, the two characters kind of help each other out. It's interesting that Green Arrow is the one telling Hawkman things that basically he should have told himself three months ago. But since he's been able to figure all of that out, now he can help Hawkman get over what was lost to him. They definitely have common ground at the end.

Nrama: You've got some amazing characters from the DC Universe coming up in the rest of the season. Silver Banshee (Odessa Rae) was just announced. Is there someone from the universe you'd like to see that you haven't yet?

http://i.newsarama.com/images/Hartley-Shanks_02.jpg

Hartley: You know, every time someone comes in from the universe, they usually end up beating the hell out of Oliver, so I don't want to see anybody. [laughs] Every time they bring in a new character, I get my ass kicked on that show. So I guess the question is, who would I like to get my ass kicked by? You know, man, I think that every time someone comes on the show...and to be quite honest with you, Silver Banshee came on the show, and I'm reading this script and I see Silver Banshee...I don't know Silver Banshee. I'd never heard of that, but just from the description, I thought I should look that up, because it probably has something to do with the comics and the DC Universe, and sure enough it did. I don't know. I like to see the people return a little bit. I'd like to see Cyborg (Lee Thompson Young) back for an episode. I think his story needs to be told a little bit more. But then, you know, I appreciate it when no one is there and they can dive in to the Clark (Tom Welling) story a little bit more. The Superman story. I have a lot of faith in them and what they're doing. They tend to know exactly...they have their finger on the pulse, you know what I mean? They have their story, their year, and they do a really good job of keeping everybody tuned in throughout the course of the year. So however many new characters they need or to maybe keep them away for a while and focus on Clark, they really do a good job. I was always an Incredible Hulk kid, but I don't think we can bring him on, because it's Marvel. [laughs] Let's see what happens there.

Nrama: Everyone wants to know what's up with Ollie's love life. Who are we going to see him end up with?

Hartley: We will see him with, let's see. In “Disciple”...you can assume that he's with a lot of women. I will say this. One of them is...I can't tell you who it is, but I can tell you that it's a series regular, and it's not someone that I've been with before. So we'll see how that goes.

Nrama: The message boards are going to go crazy with that little hint! We wanted to ask you about another upcoming episode, “Warrior” that Allison Mack is directing. What was that experience like?

Hartley: That was really great. I learned a long time ago...I think it was two years ago, maybe three years ago, when Tom (Welling) directed an episode. My first instinct was, 'Oh crap.' Basically I don't know how I'm going to handle that. But it was such a great experience. What I learned from that was, though it's hard to do sometimes, is not to have any preconceived notions that are so easy to have. Tom turned out to be...what I think his talent is, is directing. I think he's one of the best directors I've ever worked under, to be totally honest with you. The guy is wonderful to work with. So then Allison comes in and directs this episode and she's so smart, but yet she understands what her grasp of directing is now. OK? So she's not afraid to ask for help or listen to other people or any of that stuff. Which makes her even smarter. Working under her is great also...unfortunately I only get to do two quick little scenes, but one of them is with her. And she's got this way about her. She's really fun to be around and work for. It was really, really great. We're lucky. We have a great cast. Everybody likes each other and there's never a big ego thing going on, you know what I mean? Everyone's there for the baby.

Nrama: Another thing I happened to see online was something about you and Stargirl (Britt Irvin) clashing.

Hartley: Yeah. I guess a little bit, although I just kind of flick her off to the side a little bit. She's really small. I mean, I don't know about us clashing, but she just kind of annoys me. [laughs] But yeah, we do clash a little bit. I think it's funny, actually. Oliver is funny with women, you know what I mean? [laughs] You never know what you're going to get with him. But she's bound and determined and she's this little firecracker and so we have a little bit of a thing going on there I guess.

Nrama: The way it's been sounding, it's looking like there may be a Season 10. Are you signed on for that?

Hartley: Yeah, but I'm looking for a lot more money. I'm going to renegotiate for a ***** load more money. [laughs] No, I'm kidding. But yeah. That's something I am signed on for. So the way it works is that, to be quite honest with you, if they want me on the show next year, if there is a Season 10...then they have me contracted. And if they don't want me on the show, then they can let me go. That's kind of the way it works. It works in their favor. So I have to mind my p's and q's. I have to be nice. Know what I mean? I can't just be a jerk. [laughs]

”Smallville” airs Friday night at 8/7c on the CW.

Smallville's Green Arrow Shoots From the Hip
by Damian Holbrook January 26, 2010 04:52 PM EST

Smallville finally ends its cruel November-til-February hiatus this week with an Ollie-centric episode that reunites the Emerald Archer (Justin Hartley) with a face from his dark past. And since fans are already frothing over next week’s “Absolute Justice” movie event, we figured this was the perfect time to talk to the hilarious Hartley about his character’s upcoming adventures…and possible on-screen entanglements.

So just when it looked like Oliver was finally getting back to his happy place, here comes his old mentor to mess things up? How bad does it get?
Yeah, the Dark Archer. He’s this guy from his past, and he’s sort of looking for Ollie to do something for him that he’s not cool with anymore and Oliver is like ‘Yeah, no.’ Then, at one point, arrows are flying everywhere. Lois gets hit. Chloe gets hit.

Yikes. It’s a bloodbath!
Well there’s this code. See, he was my trainer, and there was this code. “Never have any lovers, friends or allies.” So to get to me, he targets them.

And how does all of this Dark Archer stuff impact Oliver? Will we ever see him as that charming guy again?
Well…I like to think I’m always charming! [Laughs] No, I have always said let this guy be f---ed up, let him have flaws. At least he knows that about himself. And I think part of that downward spiral [he was earlier this season] was him second-guessing himself. Instead of asking questions, he just said ‘Well, this must be who I am then. I must be a loser.’ But by facing his demons, literally someone face-to-face from his past—and coming out on top—that kind of reinforces the fact that he’s not a loser. He doesn’t have to be that guy.

And it seems that all season, Chloe and Lois and even Clark have been trying to save Ollie by telling him what he is. ‘You’re a good guy, you’re a hero.” But now, with the Archer, he’s able to finally see what he isn’t.
Right! Like, were his friends just pumping him full of smoke? It’s all on Oliver’s lap…and there is a very cool little save that happens with Clark, but it’s not one of those things where his friends have to keep telling him he’s OK anymore. It’s a cool way to put an end to all of that.

Do you factor into “Warrior”?
The one Allison [Mack, Chloe] directed? I do, a little bit. There’s a pivotal scene, but it’s a little scene…I’m just glad I got to work with Allison.

How was she as a director?
She’s fun! I mean, she’s a royal pain in the ass, but aside from that, she’s terrific. [Laughs] I’ve always said that she’s a smart person, and she did a great job. People are saying it’s great. I told her ‘I’ll apologize in advance for bringing your show down a bit, but even with me in it, it’s pretty good!’ [Laughs]

You also get some fun work with her in “Absolute Justice,” right?
Yeah. It’s not like a CSI or anything, but there’s a little bit of a procedural with us as two detectives trying to figure out what’s going on, to find clues.

You realize that every time you two appear on screen together, there’s some mad chemistry, right?
Oh yeah. [Laughs]

So what can you tell me about either of your upcoming relationships?
We’re working a lot together, I can tell you that. Hopefully whatever we do…that whole thing is out of my hands. That’s up to the writers and producers. But once you get the material, finding any kind of chemistry and anything interesting in that relationship [is the key] and hopefully they’ll like what’s going on. It’s not for lack of effort. I think we’ve been given good material and so far it’s been fun working with her. We’ll see what happens.

Should fans be ready to play more of the Green Arrow Drinking Game, where they take a shot for each shirtless scene in the next batch of episodes?
Um, let’s see…[Laughs] Man, I am naked so often on this show! In “Disciple,” I think you’ll be doing a couple of shots, but you might want to do half-shots, because I lost a lot of weight. I’ve been working a lot and didn’t get to the gym, so you should probably do half-shots. But the good news is you can do three or four of them. [Laughs]

Will any of your female costars be in those scenes?
Always! I’m not going to walk around naked by myself! [Laughs]

Where does Ollie fall into the Amanda Waller/Checkmate stuff?
Right now, he’s privy to all of it and he’s on the quest to figure out what they’re up to and put an end to all of it. I think he and Clark are going to start working together on that, which is cool, I always love working with Tom.

Finally, Clark and Oliver, together again!
It’s fun, isn’t it? Instead of the two of them *****ing at each other, to have them actually working together? Yeah, you’ll be happy.
