how about this: batman's judgement is flawed after TDK, swept up in the horror at the circus, he, as batman, takes dick, who is around 15-16, this can further the fact that the public sees him as a criminal.
later, bats lets dick go, who in turn starts kicking the crap out of criminals w/o remorse, seeing what he inspired, batman reveals himself to dick and tells him about two-face and his quest and how he needs to focus his rage.
batman takes dick under his wing and voila! robin.

I can't remember which comic it was in (either Turning Points or Robin: Year One), where Batman and Gordon argue about Batman taking on Robin and exposing him to danger. Batman argues back that he is helping the kid, giving him a chance that he never had, something to that effect.

In turning points Batman says that he had to give the boy an outlet, lest he 'self-destruct" (Batman's words).

That's it. That's the way it could work on screen.

I don't know that we need to see Robin, per se. We could just be introduced to Dick Grayson. We could just see hints that Robin is going to exist at some point in this Batman's future. The third Batman film could simply end with Bruce and Dick having found each other, with Dick having helped out somehow, and the situation in Gotham approaching what we know.

The best explanation of the name "Robin" I've seen came in BATMAN FOREVER (which I think came from the 80's comics). The metphorical significance of the name and guise of Robin is enough. Robins are the harbingers of new hope, life, etc. That is exactly what Dick Grayson represents for Bruce, and for Batman and his mission.

The age issue is simple. Make Dick 16 or so. Problem solved.

Actionwise, the appeal of Robin is that Batman trained him. It's believeable that he can kick ass because he's been trained to do so.

As for solving why Robin operates to begin with? People have figured it out already. Because he wants to. Part of the "escalation" of Batman's presence. Batman is responsible for inspiring him, so now he feels responsible for protecting and guiding him. It's not hard to believe on any level.

There's no reason the concept of Robin and Dick Grayson's presence in Batman's life couldn't work as well as anything else.

Not including Robin now would be a waste considering it's timing. If we just deal with Dick, there's a good shot we won't have another film to continue his story.

So we'd be better off not doing him at all right now, and waiting until the next series.

I think a mix of Batman Begins(the way the used the flash backs),Robins Reckoning (from the animated series),and Dark victory would be a way of doing it

It really would be a twist to have a kind of have Bruce Wayne/Batman play the Henri Ducard/Ra's Al Ghul role to Dick Grayson's young Bruce Wayne. The whole movie can be Robin begins, pretty much, with him earning his way next to Batman's side. I really think it can work with a 14 year old if they emphasis the tragedy and helping this kid channel his vengeance and that he's actually IN training as Robin only to graduate as his own person one day as Nightwing.

Another movie I'd like to see, btw, with Batman playing the role of the parent who is forced to let go and never quite gets over it. There's just so many great things about the character and his growth but people are so focused on his early years. Have to move on at some point.

Robin's Reckoning would be a great title for a movie as well (BB, RR, it works).

i think the name robin could be explained like in all star, that he was read robin hood stories and associates that w/ his parents.

Actually that always was the reason behind the name. It's why his costume looked the way it did in the first place with the little booties and the green and the collar that ties together instead of buttons up. The actual bird correlation came later.

I know, I know. Laughing Young Daredevil, Robin Hood references, etc. It can all be tied together if need be.

Aside from the fact that it completely takes away from the sudden nature of them being "thrust together" (no gay jokes), no. I mind the stupid pun-based nature explanation of the origin of the name "Robin".

robin can work. he can, and if done right, will get the attention he deserves. robin is a good character, but he's so underused in the media. the point of having robin in a batman series is kind of missed in all the cartoons. i really think they need to make a long halloween/dark victory animated movies to explain robin's existence.

I'm almost certian that show will never make it past a pilot. Seriously, what the hell kind of idea for a show is that? Why the hell would I want to watch a teen comedy about the life of a young circus acrobat? What the hell, really?
