Deborah Snyder on Clark Kent: "He is looking for his place in the world. He is a little lost when we find him, trying to figure it out. That's what makes him very real. You can relate to the humanity in him" (Source).

I took this as meaning that the film will start with Clark wandering the world -- before he becomes Superman. I think it would help the audience relate to him more if he starts out not as Superman, but instead as a man with questions, trying to find his way in life. Then, when he finally dons the suit and cape, there will be a greater sense of accomplishment and catharsis.

I think it's easier for an audience to accept a super-powered alien in a blue leotard as a character if you show his journey first, as opposed to just starting the movie with his character fully-formed. Although, I suppose Snyder might give us just a small glimpse of Superman first, and then have the flashback. Maybe that would still give the appropriate effect. However, I interpret Deborah Snyder's comments as discounting that possibility.

Much like Batman Begins where Bruce's flashbacks ended just beore he became Batman I think the flashbacks will end the same here for Superman. Its like that journey is over here's the next one.

Yeah I think it will be something like this. I wouldn't be suprised if the narrative structure was really close to BB. It's not like the rest of the film will be much like BB, so I can imagine they wouldn't have felt a need to shy away from using flashbacks or story telling in a similar way.

Perhaps the film will start off with Clark in the dockyard, then out to sea where the tidal wave washes over the boat (due to a certain Kryptonian vessel hitting the ocean)

Clark ends up in the water (first scene of trailer 2), where the flashbacks start.

Gets out of the water and watches the bus go by in the local village (that scene is in trailer 2), and the flashback of the bus crash scene.

Then sees the Zod arrival on TV, and hitches his way back.

Cue action !

Perhaps :-)

so do you think we'll get to see kid clark later in the movie, in flashbacks?

You have to be lost to think shannon not playing Zod.I guess Antje Traue not playing faora either.Maybe she playing wonder woman. You never know.(sarcasm)
It seems that here people read quickly the posts and then changes the meaning of the sentences..What I was saying is that WB hasn't showed nothing officially about Zod..just one still..I'm not saying that Shannon is not playing Zod..read carefully..We know that he is Zod, but not only because Shannon said that ( even if I don't trust actors, remember Cotillard not being talia), but because press releases said that. I said that last year, a year before the release of tdkr, the villain was already an iconic character and today, 3 months before the film, you barely know that there is a bad challenge for superman because of the marketing..If it hadn't been for the toys, Zod could have easily had a pink skirt, and we would not have been able to know it..

they are not showing too much of Zod, just like Batman begins marketing was more about the hero himself. Right now, the general audience needs to know this movie is about supes. They will be surprised at how dangerous Zod is when they see the movie.

On the other hand, TDKR needed people to fear Bane before watching the movie.

I would like this movie to be like BB..I loved it and I think that is the best superhero birth on film..The perfect beginning of a journey..But, ( I don't speak for myself right now ) I'm afraid that people will start again with the origin story already seen, we had 10 seasons of Smallville for that and bla bla bla..I think that people wants a bad ass Superman, they want enter the theatre knowing that he will get fist to fist with a Kryptonian, destroying everything around them..I don't want this movie to feel as the "usual Superman origin" for the audience..

Edit: BB was an origin story, but for Batman we had never had before a movie based only on that, even if people already knew the story of young Bruce and his parents..I'm sure that the marketing will clear people's mind, but right now, if it would continue like this, there's a risk that this could feel as the "already told origin story".

I'm curious how they'll show that Zod isn't a clear-cut villain. He's already wearing all black :P

I agree in principle, but with the public perception of Superman movies being what it is, they also need to see super-powered throwdowns.

we will definitely get huge fights. they will probably show some of those action scenes in the next trailer.

But Supes needs some great origins for the general audience. Smallville is a whole different beast.

All true.

I wonder if we're getting one of Snyder's special opening titles.

The idea is that Kal-El's ship is an emergency pod, from the main ship (which crashes). So He is saved as they approach Earth.

Maybe I'm wrong, but it's an interesting theory.

That shot of Lara(?) watching the destruction of Krypton - WHY is she alone? WHERE is she watching from? If its on Krypton, then why is there no damage where she is? It's that shot that's got me intrigued...

Did you not see debris flying in the window where Lara was watching the destruction? You seriously need to stop believing all the crackpots on IMDB...I don't know whether to shake my head at your ideas or laugh because they are utterly ridiculous

Are people really questioning whether Lara and Jor El die on Krypton or not? Come on people, those idiots on IMDB are obviously having a laugh at the believers.

Yeah, I get the feeling we might get something very similar - a bearded, lost Clark Kent wandering around, while we constantly get flashbacks from his youth, and Krypton later. If it's anything like BB where the film takes its time to establish the character before he puts on the suit, I'll be very happy.

You know in my head I can fit in all the chilhood flashbacks to him wandering Alaska but I can't seem to see how Krypton fits in unless it starts there. Unless we see Zod earlier than expected and he sees I don't know Clark in the Superman costume notices the S crest and then we flash back to Krypton.

True. Assuming a flashback structure, an adult Clark can (of course) be source of his own memories. But he’d know nothing about the Krypton backstory. So maybe Zod (or holographic Jor-El) handles those flashback duties. Alternatively, you start the story on Krypton (notwithstanding the similarity to STM) and then jump forward in time and space to Alaska.

I really hope to see a Bale cameo fingers crossed! And if its not the case I will be doing my part for a Justice League movie to come to fruition.

Or maybe we get the childhood flashbacks while he's wandering, and when he finds "The Fortress", he speaks to Jor-El and then we see the whole Krypton story before he even got to Earth.
